Alphabet a more defensive stock in 2023 - BofA

Ahead of Alphabet's (NASDAQ:GOOGL) earnings release on Thursday, February 2, BofA analysts raised the firm's price target on the stock to $119 from $116, maintaining a Buy rating.

They told investors in a research note that the firm is updating estimates for FX and the tech giant's recent cost-cutting.

"We are at revenue/GAAP EPS of $63.6bn/$1.20 vs Street $64.5bn/$1.21," wrote the analysts. "Our recent ad checks with search large advertisers are mixed, with travel strength offset by eCommerce and finance pressure, and expect search at flat to down 1% in 4Q (in-line with buyside expectations)."

In addition, they said the firm expects YouTube ad revenue growth to "decelerate 3pts q/q to -5%, relatively in-line with Street." For Cloud, they see revenue growth decelerating 4pt q/q in the fourth quarter to +34% year-over-year to $7.4bn, slightly above Street consensus expectations, and with quarter-over-quarter margins improving to -8.8%.

On estimates and FX, they revealed that for 2023, it is "increasing revenue by 1% to $254.2bn (to 8% y/y growth), EBITDA by 4% to $121bn and GAAP EPS by 3% to $5.40 vs Street at $5.23."

However, they assume an FX benefit will offset some incremental core revenue pressure and expect layoffs to start aiding core Google margins in the second quarter, with year-over-year margins turning positive in the second half of 2023.

"We see Alphabet as a more defensive stock in group in 2023 (and less of a 'risk-on' stock after outperforming sector in 2022) with more relative earnings stability given utility of search, expense flexibility, healthy margins that will minimize cash flow concerns, and opportunity to support stock with buybacks," the analysts concluded.

Alphabet shares dive after Google AI chatbot Bard flubs* answer in ad

*sknocić

LONDON (Reuters) - Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Inc lost $100 billion in market value on Wednesday after its new chatbot shared inaccurate information in a promotional video and a company event failed to dazzle, feeding worries that the Google parent is losing ground to rival Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT).

Alphabet shares slid as much as 9% during regular trading with volumes nearly three times the 50-day moving average. They pared losses after hours and were roughly flat. The stock had lost 40% of its value last year but rallied 15% since the beginning of this year, excluding Wednesday's losses.

Reuters was first to point out an error in Google's advertisement for chatbot Bard, which debuted on Monday, about which satellite first took pictures of a planet outside the Earth's solar system.

Google has been on its heels after OpenAI, a startup Microsoft is backing with around $10 billion, introduced software in November that has wowed consumers and become a fixation in Silicon Valley circles for its surprisingly accurate and well-written answers to simple prompts.

Google's live-streamed presentation on Wednesday morning did not include details about how and when it would integrate Bard into its core search function. A day earlier, Microsoft held an event touting that it had already released to the public a version of its Bing search with ChatGPT functions integrated.

Bard's error was discovered just before the presentation by Google, based in Mountain View, California.

"While Google has been a leader in AI innovation over the last several years, they seemed to have fallen asleep on implementing this technology into their search product," said Gil Luria, senior software analyst at D.A. Davidson. "Google has been scrambling over the last few weeks to catch up on Search and that caused the announcement yesterday (Tuesday) to be rushed and the embarrassing mess up of posting a wrong answer during their demo."

Microsoft shares rose around 3% on Wednesday, and were flat in post-market trading.

Alphabet posted a short GIF video of Bard in action via Twitter, promising it would help simplify complex topics, but it instead delivered an inaccurate answer.

In the advertisement, Bard is given the prompt: "What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) can I tell my 9-year old about?" Bard responds with a number of answers, including one suggesting the JWST was used to take the very first pictures of a planet outside the Earth's solar system, or exoplanets. The first pictures of exoplanets were, however, taken by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in 2004, as confirmed by NASA.

"This highlights the importance of a rigorous testing process, something that we're kicking off this week with our Trusted Tester program," a Google spokesperson said. "We'll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard's responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information."

FORMIDABLE COMPETITOR

Alphabet is coming off a disappointing fourth quarter as advertisers cut spending.

The search and advertising giant is moving quickly to keep pace with OpenAI and rivals, reportedly bringing in founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page to accelerate its efforts.

"People are starting to question is Microsoft going to be a formidable competitor now against Google's really bread-and-butter business," said King Lip, chief strategist at Baker Avenue Wealth Management, which owns Alphabet and Microsoft shares.

Lip cautioned, though, that concerns about Alphabet may be overblown, saying: "I think still Bing is a far, far cry away from Google's search capabilities."

The new ChatGPT software has injected excitement into technology firms after tens of thousands of job cuts in recent weeks and executive pledges to pare back on so-called moonshot projects. AI has become a fixation for tech executives who have mentioned it as much as six times more often on recent earnings calls than in prior quarters, Reuters found.

The appeal of AI-driven search is that it could spit out results in plain language, rather than in a list of links, which could make browsing faster and more efficient. It remains unclear what impact that might have on targeted advertising, the backbone of search engines like Google.

Chatbot AI systems also carry risks for corporations because of inherent biases in their algorithms that can skew results, sexualize images or even plagiarize, as consumers testing the service have discovered. Microsoft, for instance, released a chatbot on Twitter in 2016 that quickly began generating racist content before being shut down. And an AI used by news site CNET was found to produce factually incorrect or plagiarized stories.

At the time of writing, the Bard ad had been viewed on Twitter more than a million times.

Bard odpowiedział m.in. że „JWST zrobił pierwsze zdjęcia planety poza naszym Układem Słonecznym”.

Jednak według NASA pierwsze zdjęcie pokazujące jakąkolwiek planetę poza naszym Układem Słonecznym zostało wykonane przez inny teleskop VLT prawie dwie dekady temu, w 2004 roku. I to były pierwsze zdjęcia.

Amazon and Google top internet stocks to own in 2023 - Goldman

E-commerce giant Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) heads Goldman Sachs’ Top Picks list for the internet sector.

The stock is “solidly our top pick for the remainder of 2023 from current trading levels,” said analysts in today's note.

The list also includes Uber (NYSE:UBER), despite shares trading almost 38% higher year-to-date.

“The company produced progress on profit initiatives with stable end demand trends & overall industry competitive intensity,” they wrote in a note.

Finally, the analysts also urged Goldman’s clients to own Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL).

“We see more favorable shorter term risk/reward for META in a dual element of rising business momentum and intense focus on efficiencies at META which is likely to sustain an upward EPS revision cycle. In the short term, GOOGL is likely to see volatile stock trading due to the mixture of increased investor focus on generative AI and on the cyclical slowdown in search and brand advertising against tough revenue comps,” they added.

Overall, they highlighted Amazon and Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) as go-to Internet stocks to own in 2023.

“We would place GOOGL along AMZN from current levels in terms of risk/reward as we remain convinced that GOOGL is among the very best companies positioned for future computing cycles tied to AI/ML, augmented reality & quantum computing,” the analysts concluded.

Amazon shares trade about 1% higher on the day while Google stock is down 0.7%.

Alphabet shares fall on report Samsung may dump Google Search for Bing

(Reuters) -Alphabet Inc shares fell as much as 4% on Monday following a report South Korea's Samsung Electronics (OTC:SSNLF) was considering replacing Google with Microsoft-owned Bing as the default search engine on its devices.

The report, published by the New York Times over the weekend, underscores the growing challenges Google's $162-billion-a-year search engine business face from Bing - a minor player that has risen in prominence recently after the integration of the artificial intelligence tech behind ChatGPT.

Google's reaction to the threat was "panic" as the company earns an estimated $3 billion in annual revenue from the Samsung (KS:005930) contract, the report said, citing internal messages.

Another $20 billion is tied to a similar Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) contract that will be up for renewal this year, the report added.

In a response to Reuters, Google said it was working to bring new AI-powered features to Search without commenting on its association with Samsung. The South Korean consumer electronics major did not respond to a request for comment.

Google has for decades dominated the search market with a share of over 80%, but Wall Street fears the company could be falling behind Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) in a fast-moving AI race.

Parent firm Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) lost $100 billion in value on Feb. 8 after its new chatbot, Bard, shared inaccurate information in a promotional video and a company event failed to dazzle.

On Monday, the stock fell to $104.90 and erased nearly $50 billion from Alphabet's market capitalization. Microsoft, meanwhile, outperformed the broader market with a rise of 1%.

"Investors worry Google has become a lazy monopolist in search and the developments of the last couple of months have served as a wake-up call," Atlantic Equities analyst James Cordwell said.

Cordwell added the potential costs tied to making Google Search more competitive than AI-powered Bing could also be a cause of concern.

Alphabet shares ended 2.7% lower at $105.9 on Monday.

Twitter masowo znika z wyszukiwarki Google.

Twitter znika z Google – ponad połowa stron wymazana z wyszukiwarki
Wyszukiwarka Google stopniowo usuwa indeksowane strony należące do domeny twitter.com.

Właściciel platformy przekonuje, że został zmuszony do zastosowania tymczasowych limitów odczytywania postów, aby powstrzymywać „ekstremalne poziomy” zbierania danych i manipulacje systemem.

Limity przedstawiają się następująco:

Posiadacze zweryfikowanych kont (z niebieskim znaczkiem) mogą przeczytać do 10 tys. postów na dobę. Subskrypcja kosztuje 8 dolarów miesięcznie;
Posiadacze niezweryfikowanych kont przeczytają maksymalnie 1 tysiąc postów na dobę;
Posiadacze nowych, nieweryfikowanych kont przeczytają 500 postów na dobę

Morgan Stanley raised the price target for Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) to $150 from $140 and Meta Platforms Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) to $350 from $300 in a note Thursday, maintaining an Overweight rating on both stocks.

MS analysts told investors that near-term fundamentals leave them bullish on both, with GOOGL "best positioned to disrupt itself," while it also trades at a 40% FCF discount to Meta.

"We expect search to fundamentally change, but change will take time, and our analysis of 3 key AI success factors still put GOOGL in the best position to disrupt/improve its own business," they said.

"Material behavior change will take time and innovation...and in the near-term, we see a path toward $7.00 of '24 EPS and a $150 PT," they added. "As discussed it is still early in AI adoption, and it will likely require new innovation and tools to further accelerate adoption. This, in our view, should help GOOGL manage the user and behavior transition and minimize near-term impacts on revenue and monetization."

On Meta, the analysts said they believe it could roll out new AI-driven tools that create new revenue streams and disrupt search.

"We fully expect META to integrate new large language models into its applications to drive new capabilities for users and advertisers, but changing behavior and material success are less certain, and online advertising doesn't have to be zero-sum," they said, warning investors not to underestimate the execution difficulty.
