Beyond Meat Stock Soars On Partnership With Global Snack Giant PepsiCo
Beyond Meat (BYND) will partner with PepsiCo (PEP) on healthy protein snacks, expanding its reach as consumers turn to plant-based food options. Beyond Meat stock soared.
The deal is Beyond Meat's potentially most far-reaching partnership. The company and PepsiCo announced a joint venture Tuesday to develop, produce and market snacks and beverages made from plant-based protein.
The partnership will allow Beyond Meat to enter new product categories and distribution channels, a statement said. Pepsi, which has a presence in more than 200 countries, will "expand its portfolio of positive choices for consumers and for the planet."
Terms of the joint venture, The PLANeT Partnership, were not disclosed.

Beyond Meat Stock
Shares of Beyond Meat soared 35% to 214.50 in Tuesday's stock market. Beyond Meat stock gapped to a new high and the stock's opening price could be used as an entry, according to MarketSmith chart analysis. PepsiCo lost 0.2%, still below its 50-day line.
Founded in 2009, Beyond Meat's burgers and other products mimic the taste and texture of animal-based meat, without the downside.
The company's recent partnerships include Yum Brands' (YUM) Taco Bell, Carl's Jr. and Del Taco (TACO). McDonald's (MCD) has also experimented with Beyond Meat patties.

Beyond Meat stock rallied after-hours Thursday after announcing multi-year deals with both McDonald's (MCD) and Taco Bell parent Yum Brands (YUM), even as the fake-meat maker reported mixed fourth-quarter results.
The deals mark the company's latest efforts to join forces with big fast-food names, following a deal with PepsiCo (PEP) last month.
Under the three-year agreement with McDonald's, Beyond Meat will be the "preferred supplier" for the patty in a new plant-based burger McDonald's is testing in select locations worldwide. The burger is called the McPlant.
The two companies will also "explore co-developing other plant-based menu items," like plant-based substitutes for pork, chicken and egg. A test of a Beyond Meat patty at some McDonald's locations in Canada ended last year, initially raising concerns Beyond Meat would lose potential business from one of the world's largest fast-food chains.
Beyond Meat also said it would work with Yum Brands to offer plant-based menu items "over the next several years" at Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC, which Yum also owns.
Beyond Meat Earnings
For the fourth quarter, Beyond Meat lost 34 cents per share. That was more than the 15 cents forecast by Zacks Investment Research. Sales rose 3.5% to $101.9 million, just past estimates for $101.48 million.
Within Beyond Meat's U.S. retail business, which includes grocery stores, sales came in at around $62 million. However, its U.S. food service business, which includes restaurants, slid 43% to $15.3 million. Food-service sales internationally also tumbled.
The fake-meat maker said it continued to experience "significantly reduced demand" in its food-service business as restaurants make coronavirus-related cutbacks. Beyond Meat has shifted business to grocery stores while the pandemic forces restaurants to limit occupancy and thin down their menus.
The company reported gross margin of 24.9%, down from 34% a year ago.
Beyond Meat continues to lose money as it spends more on new hires and on investments to expand into Europe and China.

Still, Beyond Meat stock rose 7% after hours in the stock market today. Shares are currently testing support at its 50-day line, a key gauge of investors' confidence in a stock.

The company, in its earnings release on Thursday, said that "the surge in demand from retail customers that characterized the early stages of the pandemic as consumers abruptly shifted towards more at-home consumption has moderated." Management echoed that sentiment in November, when Beyond Meat reported third-quarter results.
The company reported the results after announcing plans last month to form a joint venture with PepsiCo to make snacks and beverages from plant-based protein.
CFRA analyst Arun Sundaram said the Pepsi partnership could "create long-term opportunities" for Beyond Meat. But he emphasized the benefits would not materialize until further down the road.
He said the deal could help Beyond Meat expand from larger meals — like plant-based burgers — into snacks sold in convenience stores, theaters and vending machines.
"That said, we don't expect this partnership to meaningfully contribute to profits in 2021, while Covid-19 could inflict long-term damage given many smaller, independent restaurants have either closed or are downsizing menus to cut costs," he said.
"In addition," he continued, "the competitive landscape is intensifying with Impossible Foods gaining traction in the retail channel, slashing prices, and expanding abroad."

Beyond Meat Shares Get Boost From Citigroup Upgrade
Marketing and distribution deals with food giants like Pepsi, McDonald's and YUM! Brands should support Beyond Meat earnings in the years ahead, Citigroup analyst Wendy Nicholson said Tuesday.
Beyond Meat (BYND) - shares traded higher Tuesday following an upgrade from Citigroup that offset the impact of the food group's plans to issue $750 million in convertible debt.
Citi analyst Wendy Nicholson said the issues that hit the group's fourth quarter earnings, including higher costs and weak food services revenues, were "mostly temporary", adding that topline sales growth is likely to get back on track once the COVID pandemic recedes later in the year.
Nicholson lifted her rating on the stock to 'buy' and boosted her price target by $43 to $184 per share, noting a "new-found enthusiasm for the longer-term story at Beyond Meat given their recent new partnerships with PepsiCo (PEP) - Get Report McDonald's (MCD) - Get Report and YUM! Brands (YUM) - Get Report."
"We believe Beyond Meat will continue to grow quickly over the next few years, but we also expect that the path of that growth trajectory may not be linear," Nicholson said. "However, we do believe the company’s new partnerships with McDonald's and YUM signal a longer-term commitment by these players to the plant- based movement and Beyond Meat as a brand.
"McDonald's and YUM are global, scale players in the foodservice industry and whose partnerships could be a massive driver of growth for BYND in the coming years," she added.
Beyond Meat shares were marked 1.25% higher in early trading Tuesday to change hands at $149.00 each. The gains were capped by the company's plans to sell $750 million in new 6-year debt that can ultimately be converted into common shares of the group.
"I like this call, I think it's a gutsy call and I think when food service fully re-opens, (CEO Ethan Brown) is going to make a lot of money," The Street's founder, Jim Cramer, told CNBC's Squawk on the Street program Tuesday. "I think you buy Beyond Meat here."
Beyond Meat and Pepsi reached a partnership deal to produce and market a new line of snacks in late January when they formed the PLANeT Partnership LLC, a joint venture that will leverage PepsiCo's marketing with Beyond Meat's plant-based food production technology.
Earlier that month, Yum! Brands said its Taco Bell division is exploring a partnership with Beyond Meat for a new plant-based product that will be tested next year. Late last year, Pizza Hut said it partnered with Beyond Meat to offer two plant-based-meat pizzas for a limited time.

While a survey of 7,200 teens showed that 43% consume or are willing to consume plant-based meat, that number declined from 47% in the Fall 2021 survey and 49% in Spring 2021.
Furthermore, out of the 86% of teens surveyed who do not eat plant-based meat, 34% are willing to try it. However, this is another decline from the 38% who said they were willing to try it in Piper's Fall 2021 survey.
