Stellantis sees car price pressure ahead as profit beats forecasts

MILAN (Reuters) -Fiat, Ram and Peugeot (OTC:PUGOY) maker Stellantis beat profit forecasts on Wednesday due to strong car prices and greater-than-expected merger benefits, but warned of pricing pressure as industry-wide supply chain problems ease.

Automakers globally have been hit by several supply problems stemming from the global coronavirus pandemic, with the worst a shortage of semiconductor chips that has hit their production.

Amid strong demand, that shortage has allowed carmakers to raise prices and Stellantis said its full-year 2022 operating profits had jumped 29%, despite a 2% drop in vehicle deliveries.

"Pricing power is going to be under pressure because of the rebalancing of supply and demand," CEO Carlos Tavares said.

He added that the semiconductor crisis had mostly been caused by major first-tier suppliers struggling to manage their own supply chains, but most now have that under control.

"Production is now okay, it's not perfect because we don't always build the cars we would like to build ... The number of troublemakers is now limited to one or two big Tier 1 (suppliers)," Tavares said.

"We believe that through the very strong order book that we have, we have some time to adapt ... The name of the game is to reduce total production costs faster than the erosion of pricing power," Tavares added.

BUYBACK

Stellantis, created just over two years ago from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot maker PSA, said its second-half 2022 operating profit rose 17%.

It also announced a share buyback programme worth up to 1.5 billion euros ($1.6 billion) for 2023, supported by more than 10.8 billion euros in industrial free cash flow last year, and said it will pay a dividend of 4.2 billion euros on its 2022 results, or 1.34 euros per share.

Stellantis said it had achieved cash synergies of 7.1 billion euros last year, far exceeding the 5 billion euros by 2024 target it had set at the time of the merger.

JP Morgan analysts described the results as "strong" and the outlook for 2023 as "solid", adding that the share buyback announcement was unexpected.

Milan-listed shares in the world's third largest automaker were up 2.1% at 1510 GMT, outperforming a 1.3% fall in Italy's blue-chip index.

Stellantis's adjusted second-half earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) grew 17% to 10.95 billion euros, topping a consensus estimate of 9.63 billion euros in a Reuters poll of analysts.

The margin on adjusted EBIT was 12% in the July-December period, down from 14.1% in the first six months of the year. But the company still met its target for a "double digit" margin last year.

It reiterated the same margin target for 2023, as well as one for positive cash flows.

Stellantis CEO Tavares' 2022 pay fell 14% to $15.7 million

(Reuters) - Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares' 2022 pay fell 14% to 14.9 million euros ($15.71 million), the maker of Fiat, Ram and Peugeot (OTC:PUGOY) vehicles said in a filing on Friday.

Tavares did not receive a retention bonus in 2022, compared with a bonus of about 2 million euros in 2021, the filing showed.

Stellantis reported profit that beat forecasts on Wednesday due to strong car prices and greater-than-expected merger benefits, but warned of pricing pressure as industry-wide supply chain problems ease.

Over 90% of Tavares' pay came from variable components after the company posted industrial free cash flows of 10.8 billion euros last year, well above the maximum target of 8.1 billion euros. Stellantis also achieved cash synergies of 7.1 billion euros during the period, far exceeding the 5 billion euros by 2024 target.

The company announced a proposed share buyback program worth up to 1.5 billion euros for 2023 and said it will pay a dividend of 4.2 billion euros on its 2022 results, or 1.34 euros per share.

Last year, Tavares' compensation of around 17.4 million euros drew an angry response from some trade unions, which urged politicians to take measures to cap executive salaries.

MILAN (Reuters) -Italy's largest automotive groups, led by Fiat-maker Stellantis, and unions on Wednesday signed an agreement for a 6.5% salary increase from this month for workers at their Italian operations to counter the effects of soaring inflation.

Wages will increase by a further 4.5% from January next year. Workers will also receive a one-off sum totalling 600 euros ($632), including benefits, to be paid in three tranches this year, UILM and FIM-CISL unions said in statements, setting out the deal.

The agreement covers almost 70,000 workers at Stellantis, Ferrari (NYSE:RACE), Iveco and CNH Industrial (NYSE:CNHI), all of which have their roots in the former Fiat group, and comes from talks that started at the end of October.

The pay increases, aimed at helping workers hit by a Europe-wide spike in consumer price inflation, form the core of a wider deal to renew four-year contracts that expired at the end of 2022 for most Italian employees at the four manufacturers.

Rocco Palombella and Gianluca Ficco of UILM said the agreement met the goals unions had set to "safeguard purchasing power".

Stellantis' ACC JV plans to start operations at Italian gigafactory in 2026

MILAN (Reuters) - ACC, a joint venture of Stellantis, Mercedes and TotalEnergies, said on Friday its planned Italian battery making plant was expected to start operations in 2026.

The plan will involve an overall investment worth over 2 billion euros ($2.1 billion) in Italy, including public funds, ACC said in a statement after meeting unions in Rome.

Carmaker Stellantis has plans to develop three 'gigafactories' in Europe to serve its increased production of battery electric vehicles. They will be built in France, Germany and Italy, through ACC, with a capacity of 40 gigawatt hours (GWh) each by 2030.

The Italian project will be set up in the southern city of Termoli, through the conversion of an existing Stellantis engine and gearbox plant, currently employing around 2,000 workers.

It should start operations at the beginning of 2026, while it should reach full capacity in 2030 with at least 1,800 employees, ACC said in the statement. ($1 = 0.9377 euros)

Stellantis' South America arm plans giant investment from 2025

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - The South American arm of carmaker Stellantis NV is planning a series of large investments starting in 2025, the firm's regional chief executive said on Friday, planning to outspend its competitors.

"For the next cycle, my investment, if approved, will be much larger than the sum of my competitors," Antonio Filosa told journalists at an event on reducing carbon emissions. He did not disclose the amount that would be invested.

Stellantis, the world's third-largest automotive group by sales, plans to launch 43 vehicles across eight brands in South America over the 2021-2025 period, with planned investments to reach over 16 billion reais ($3.14 billion).

Currently, the group leads vehicle sales in South America, with a market share of about 24%, according to the executive.

In terms of cutting emissions, the company is planning the local production of flex-fuel hybrid vehicles - which run on batteries, but also use engines that burn a mixture of gasoline and ethanol - and ethanol hybrids.

"South America will become a cradle of this future," said Filosa, referring also to the supply of raw materials for batteries, such as lithium, nickel and cobalt.

However, only after 2026 and 2027 will Brazil have a relevant growth in sales of electric and hybrid vehicles, in part encouraged by cheaper local production.

Brazil offers an advantage in the auto industry's so-called decarbonization mission, due to the use of sugar cane ethanol as fuel in engines, whose release of carbonic gas can be captured back by crop plantations. In other major markets, the prevailing option has been the purely electric route.

Bloomberg reports Thursday, citing people familiar with the situation, that automaker Stellantis NV (NYSE:STLA) is “leaning” toward expanding production of its Peugeot e-208 electric vehicle in Spain despite pressure from the French government to add output in France.

Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire would like Stellantis to build the compact model locally in France and has been discussing the matter with CEO Carlos Tavares, said the people.

Stellantis currently builds the vehicle in Slovakia and is now considering an expansion of its plant in Zaragoza, northeastern Spain, where it already makes small cars including the Opel Corsa. However, a final decision hasn’t been made.

Governments across Europe are fighting for automaking jobs as the market shifts to battery power. Securing production of a mass-market vehicle like the 208 would be a big get, as it’s now Europe’s best-selling car, having ended the 14-year reign of the Volkswagen (ETR:VOWG_p) Golf in 2022.

The French government is working with Stellantis and its peers to locate assembly of as many vehicles as possible in France, a finance ministry official said, declining to elaborate.

Stellantis pledged to produce 12 EVs in France, but they’re mostly larger, higher-end models like the e-308 sedan and e-408 crossover. After French automaker Renault SA (OTC:RNLSY) said it would assemble its electric R5 compact car at home, Paris is hoping Stellantis will also build more budget vehicles in the country to help counter inflation, the people said.

Shares of STLA are up 2.01% in afternoon trading on Thursday.

Stellantis recalls 131,700 Ram trucks over powertrain software issue - NHTSA

(Reuters) - Stellantis will recall 131,700 Ram 1500 pickup trucks manufactured in 2021 due to a powertrain software issue, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) website showed on Wednesday.

The issue may cause the pickup trucks with 5.7L eTorque engines to stall due to an incorrect fuel mixture condition, according to the NHTSA.

Stellantis did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment.

Dealers will update the powertrain control module software on the impacted vehicles for free, according to the NHTSA.

Stellantis in February recalled 340,000 diesel Ram trucks to replace an electrical connector after reports of six fires.

Automaker, Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) on Tuesday, made an announcement regarding its partnership with Faurecia (EPA:EPED) and Michelin (EPA:MICP). They have signed a binding agreement wherein Stellantis will acquire a 33.3% stake in Symbio, a prominent company specializing in zero-emission hydrogen mobility. Faurecia and Michelin will continue to be shareholders, each holding a 33.3% stake in Symbio.

This announcement marks a notable milestone in the efforts to decarbonize the mobility industry and showcases Symbio's exceptional expertise in hydrogen fuel cell advancements. With Stellantis coming on board as a shareholder, Symbio's growth will receive a substantial boost, both in Europe and the United States.

“Acquiring an equal stake in Symbio will bolster our leadership position in hydrogen-powered vehicles by supporting our fuel cell van production in France, and it also serves as a perfect complement to our growing battery-electric vehicle portfolio,” said Carlos Tavares, Stellantis CEO. “As we push our Dare Forward 2030 plan forward and move to become carbon net zero by 2038, we are considering every technological tool at our fingertips to fight global warming. Hydrogen fuel cells are necessary, and Symbio will become a significant player in the battle to protect future generations.”

Symbio has a goal of manufacturing 50,000 fuel cells annually by 2025, utilizing its cutting-edge gigafactory in Saint-Fons. The production at this state-of-the-art facility is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2023.

Symbio previously introduced its HyMotive project in 2022, which aims to expedite industrialization and foster the development of groundbreaking innovations. Through this initiative, the company envisions achieving a total annual production capacity of 100,000 systems in France by 2028, ultimately generating 1,000 employment opportunities within the country.

“We are delighted with this transaction, which further increases Symbio's capabilities and will give additional momentum to the joint venture. Symbio is now perfectly equipped to scale up and expand its leadership outside Europe, at a time when the automotive industry is accelerating toward zero emissions,” said Patrick Koller, Chief Executive Officer of Faurecia. “This agreement benefits all parties and allows FORVIA to confirm its status as a global leader in clean mobility.”

“The entry of Stellantis into the capital of Symbio is a tremendous development driver for our joint subsidiary,” said Florent Menegaux, CEO of Michelin. “It is also a perfect demonstration that fuel cell technology is essential for the automotive industry to succeed in the electrification of mobility, particularly for professional use. Stellantis is already a partner of choice and will be a key player with us in the future. Finally, this transaction reinforces the conviction that Michelin has held for many years: hydrogen will be one of the unavoidable solutions for decarbonization.”

Shares of STLA are down 1.55% in morning trading on Tuesday.

PARIS (Reuters) - Stellantis has no plans to move production of the electric Peugeot (OTC:PUGOY) e-208 to France from Spain despite a push from the French government for more locally made cars, CEO Carlos Tavares said in an interview published on Wednesday.

"The economic equation link to the imposed relocation of this project would not be in the interest of the company nor the country," Tavares told daily Le Figaro.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are more expensive than their fossil-fuel counterparts and European carmakers plan cheaper models encouraged by government subsidies.

France, for example, plans a subsidy for EVs produced in Europe as they would have a lower carbon footprint than imported models and a social leasing program offering EVs for around 100 euros ($108) per month to poorer households.

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said small electric vehicles should be built in France on top of higher-end models.

"I know Carlos Tavares enjoys challenges...I ask him to take up the challenge to build small electric vehicles, like the 208, in France. Maybe not the whole car but why not parts of it," he told BFM TV.

Last month, Stellantis, the world's No.3 carmaker, said it would unveil its first European-made affordable electric car in mid-October, the new Citroën e-C3, as it gears up to counter the arrival of lower-cost Chinese brands in the European market.

The need for more affordable European models has been driven by Chinese EV brands, which are seen as a threat to European carmakers as they offer cheaper models.

"The results will tell us who made the right call amidst the Chinese competition," Tavares told Le Figaro, adding the Chinese carmakers' costs arriving in Europe were 20-25% lower than those of the European companies.

W najnowszym rozwoju Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) należący do Fiata Chryslera poniósł porażkę w próbie powstrzymania Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (NS:MAHM) ze sprzedaży odnowionego samochodu terenowego Roxor w Stanach Zjednoczonych.

…no właśnie, do czego? Do przebranżowienia, zamknięcia, minimalizacji skali produkcji?
