Amazon invests $4 billion in AI startup Anthropic, acquires minority stake

In an attempt to stay competitive in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) sector, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has announced a substantial investment in AI startup Anthropic. The tech giant is set to inject up to $4 billion into the fledgling company, as announced on Monday.

Anthropic, launched by siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei in 2021, is a direct competitor to OpenAI. Both founders are former employees of OpenAI, further intensifying the competition in the AI field. Anthropic has made its mark with its AI assistant Claude, which competes directly with ChatGPT.

The investment comes on the heels of Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)'s extensive multi-year financial commitment to OpenAI. Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL), another significant player in the AI race, has also invested in Anthropic. These investments underscore the escalating interest and competition in the AI sector among technology giants.

As part of the deal, Amazon will acquire a minority stake in Anthropic. The startup plans to use Amazon Web Services' (AWS) proprietary chips to develop, train, and deploy its AI software. AWS will become Anthropic's primary cloud provider under this agreement.

In addition to providing infrastructure support, Amazon will offer its cloud customers early access to Anthropic’s technology via Amazon Bedrock, the firm's AI platform for businesses. This strategic move underlines Amazon's determination not to fall behind its competitors in this rapidly expanding sector.

The investment signifies a significant commitment from Amazon to advance its position in the AI race against other tech behemoths.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -U.S. ecommerce firm Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) said on Tuesday it would launch its online shopping service in South Africa in 2024, entering a market dominated by Naspers' TakeAlot.

The online retail giant said starting on Tuesday, independent sellers in South Africa could register their businesses on its marketplace website.

The launch of Amazon's service comes at a time when South Africa has seen a sharp rise in online shopping after the pandemic brought an opportunity for e-commerce to finally take hold and contribute meaningfully to traditional sales.

The online service will provide "local sellers, brand owners, and entrepreneurs... the opportunity to grow their business with Amazon," Robert Koen, general manager of the Sub-Saharan Africa region for Amazon, said in a statement.

Microsoft in talks to sign on Amazon as customer in $1 billion cloud tools deal - Insider

(Reuters) -Microsoft is preparing to bring Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) as a customer for its 365 cloud productivity tools in a deal worth over $1 billion, news site Insider reported on Tuesday, citing an internal document and a person familiar with the matter.

The e-commerce giant has committed the amount for over five years and to secure more than one million Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) 365 license seats, according to the report.

Microsoft, whose shares gained nearly 1% in extended trading following the report, declined to comment. Amazon did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.

Amazon is expected to start setting up the new systems in early November, the report said, adding that the company currently uses a local, on premise version of Microsoft's Office products.
