Some companies in China are going to have to deal with challenges of a trade war, tariffs, government oversight and other issues that might weigh on earnings. But what about the so-called Google of China in that mix? Baidu Inc. (NASDAQ: BIDU) was getting destroyed in its earnings reaction. The reason is simple: the Chinese search engine giant posted its first quarterly loss since 2005.

Its quarterly revenue was $3.59 billion, and it generated a net loss attributable to shareholders of $47.5 million. Baidu’s revenue from online marketing services rose by about 3% to $2.57 billion (17.66 billion RMB), about $100 million short of expectations.

Baidu also gave guidance for second-quarter revenues to be in a range of 25.1 billion to 26.6 billion RMB ($3.74 billion to $3.96 billion). Analysts were calling for more than 29 billion RMB ahead. This represents a range of −3% to 2% year over year, or 1% to 6% increase year over year when excluding revenues from announced divestitures.

Baidu attempted to soften the blow by also announcing a $1 billion share buyback plan, but that failed as leadership changes were also announced. Hailong Xiang, senior vice president of the search business, has tendered his resignation after 14 years of service at Baidu. Dou Shen was promoted to be senior vice president, overseeing Baidu’s mobile business, which was previously known as the search business, and he has been with Baidu since 2012.

When Baidu Inc. (NASDAQ: BIDU) reported its most recent quarterly results after the markets closed on Monday, the firm said that it had $1.47 in earnings per share (EPS) and $3.84 billion in revenue. That compared with consensus estimates of $0.94 in EPS and $3.77 billion in revenue.

Baidu App daily active users (DAUs) reached 188 million in June 2019, growing 27% year over year. In the same time, Smart Mini Program monthly active users (MAUs) reached 270 million, up 49%.

Online marketing revenues were $2.80 billion, decreasing 9% year over year and increasing 9% quarter over quarter. Other revenues were $1.03 billion, increasing 44% year over year, driven mainly by robust growth in iQIYI membership services, cloud and smart devices.

Looking ahead to the fiscal third quarter, the company expects to see revenue in the range of $3.84 billion to $4.07 billion. Consensus estimates call for $1.19 in EPS and $3.97 billion in revenue for the quarter.

Chińska firma technologiczna okazała dochód netto w wysokości 6,345 mld ¥ juanów (911 mln dolarów). W tym samym okresie rok temu wskaźnik ten był równy 2,081 mld ¥. Zysk na akcję obliczony z zastosowaniem GAAP wyniósł 2,62 dolara przewyższając konsensus o 3 centy. Skorygowany dochód netto wyniósł 1,32 mld dolarów, a skorygowany zysk na akcję -- 3,81 dolara (98% więcej niż rok temu i 39 centów więcej niż oczekiwano). Opracowany przez Baidu komputer ma procesor 10-kubitowy (10 bitów kwantowych), ale firma stworzyła również czip 36-kubitowy – napisano w komunikacie chińskiego koncernu.

Według danych firmy analitycznej IDC rządy państw i firmy zainwestują w sumie 16,4 mld dolarów w rozwój technologii kwantowych do końca 2027 roku.

Amerykański koncern IBM ogłosił plany stworzenia komputera kwantowego do zastosowań komercyjnych w 2025 roku, dysponującego procesorem ponad 4000-kubitowym. Dotychczas IBM zaprezentował procesory 127-kubitowe.

Investing.com - Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) reported on Tuesday second quarter earnings that beat analysts' forecasts and revenue that fell short of expectations.

Baidu announced earnings per share of 15.79 on revenue of 23.16B. Analysts polled by Investing.com anticipated EPS of 10.52 on revenue of 29.4B.

Baidu shares are down 0% from the beginning of the year, still down 19.32% from its 52 week high of 182.60 set on October 20, 2021. They are outperforming the Nasdaq 100 which is down 23.5% from the start of the year.

Baidu's report follows an earnings missed by Tencent ADR on August 17, who reported EPS of 0.2819 on revenue of 19.73B, compared to forecasts EPS of 0.3769 on revenue of 19.89B.

Walt Disney had beat expectations on August 10 with third quarter EPS of 1.09 on revenue of 21.5B, compared to forecast for EPS of 0.9733 on revenue of 20.99B.

Baidu jumps on $5 billion buyback news

Investing.com --ADRs in Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) jumped in premarket trading on Wednesday after the Chinese search engine giant announced a new $5 billion stock buyback and forecast better times ahead in 2023.

"In 2023, we believe we have a clear path to reaccelerate our revenue growth, and we are now well positioned to make use of the opportunities that China's economic recovery offers us," Co-founder and Chief Executive Robin Li said in a statement.

The move underscores the greater confidence in China's technology sector after a string of announcements indicating that the Chinese Communist Party's campaign to crack down on the growing power of Internet platform companies has effectively ended.

By 05:40 ET (10:40 GMT), Baidu ADRs were up 7.0% in response.

Baidu said at the same time that the cost savings it had implemented during the pandemic had started to bear fruit, with underlying operating profit rising 14% from a year earlier in the second half. Lower personnel costs after a mass round of layoffs reduced selling, general and administrative expenses by 9%.

Even so, underlying earnings per ADR fell to CNY 11.60 ($1=CNY 6.8954) from CNY 16.87 in the previous quarter, as the pandemic continued to weigh on its core business. Revenue of CNY 33.8B was roughly flat from a year earlier.

Baidu said earlier this month that it expects to complete testing of a new enhanced AI product that some see as a rival to the ChatGPT tool backed by Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT). Li said that the company is "poised to capitalize on the imminent inflection point in AI, unlocking exciting new opportunities across our entire business portfolio - from mobile ecosystem to AI Cloud, autonomous driving, smart devices, and beyond."

Baidu's core online marketing business is expected to rebound significantly this year as the lifting of mobility restrictions allows it to source revenue from a broader base of vendors and advertisers. The company's autonomous driving venture is also making headway, having secured its first license from regulators to test vehicles with no driver or safety operator in the car. Apollo Go, Baidu's autonomous ride-hailing service, provided 561,000 rides in the fourth quarter, up 162% on the year.

BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Hong Kong-listed shares in China's Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) rebounded 15.7% on Friday as users told of their experiences with the Ernie bot, recouping losses from a day earlier prompted by the chatbot's launch, which failed to impress.

On Thursday, viewers of the Chinese search engine giant's presentation panned the company's lack of a live demonstration and a public launch, comparing it unfavourably to the capabilities and free-to-use launch of U.S. research lab OpenAI's ChatGPT in November.

But some of the few users who received invite codes to try Ernie later in the day began to post and livestream tests of the Chinese chatbot and do a side-by-side comparison with U.S. chatbots such as Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)'s Bing chatbot, which is powered by ChatGPT technology.

One user described on the Weibo (NASDAQ:WB) social media platform how Ernie had answered a question about the status of Hong Kong philosopher Zhang Jinqing accurately.

"The response was O.K.", the user said.

"There is a definite gap between Ernie bot and Bing, but it is not insanely big, in certain questions (Ernie) even performed better than Bing," according to a Weibo post by tech blogger Chapingjun, who has more than 2.4 million followers.

Analysts also said the initial disappointment the market felt from the launch was tempered by the realisation that the Chinese search engine giant was still best placed to build China's strongest rival to ChatGPT.

"The market's demand for the industrial application of general large-scale models is rapidly stimulated, and (Baidu) is expected to rely on historical accumulation and first-mover advantages to quickly acquire users and data," CITIC Securities said in a research note on Friday.

More than 75,000 corporate users have applied for a trial of an Ernie API developed by Baidu Cloud, the Chinese company said in a video published on its official WeChat account on Friday.

Baidu gains as Q1 earnings top analyst expectations

Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) shares trade about 2% higher in pre-market Tuesday after the company reported better-than-expected Q1 earnings.

Baidu posted adjusted profit per American depositary receipt of CNY 16.10 (CNY 1 = $0.1436), topping the CNY 12.20 expected. Revenue came in at CNY 31.14 billion while analysts were looking for CNY 29.92B.

"In the first quarter of 2023, Baidu Core delivered a solid performance, with year-on-year revenue growth accelerating from previous quarters, supporting operating margin improvement through operating leverage," said Robin Li, co-founder and CEO of Baidu.

Baidu reported 657 monthly active users (MAUs). The company’s stock has benefited from the generative AI frenzy with CEO Li describing the recent developments as “transformative.”

“In light of this trend, Baidu has introduced its ERNIE Bot in China, which we plan to steadily incorporate into all our businesses"

CFO Rong Luo added that "generative AI represents a new paradigm shift in the AI, and Baidu is poised to take advantage of this massive market opportunity.”

“Baidu will continue to invest unwaveringly in this area in the coming quarters,” he added.
