PARIS (Reuters) -The Renault (EPA:RENA) group on Tuesday said sales at its flagship brand fell for a fourth consecutive year in 2022 to 1,466,729 units excluding Russia, a 9.4% decline from 2021.

The French carmaker, which was hit harder than most rivals by the COVID-19 crisis and supply chain snags due to chip shortages, is in the middle of a turnaround in a drive to boost profits.

The group is betting on higher-margin and electric cars to drive growth. It said that in 2022 the Renault brand, which accounts for two-thirds of group sales, was the third European brand for electrified vehicle sales behind Toyota and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) with 228,000 units sold, an increase of 12% from 2021.

Its global market share was 4%, shrinking 0.5 percentage points from a year earlier. Out the 10 top markets, the Renault brand scored an increase in sales in only two - Turkey and Colombia.

Sales fell 15% in its top market France, were stable in number 2 market Brazil and fell 25% in the third most important market, Germany. Including Russia, global sales declined by 15%.

Fabrice Cambolive, Chief Operating Officer of the Renault brand, said he was optimistic things would improve this year as the company has a better portfolio and higher stocks.

However, he acknowledged that global price cuts announced recently by Tesla were an issue that Renault - like rivals - would have to contend with.

"It's a move that is challenging everybody," he told reporters on a conference call.

In November, the Renault group unveiled a major overhaul that will see it separate its activities in five businesses, deepen ties with China's Geely and spin off its electric vehicles unit through a stock market listing this year. It is also in talks with Japanese partner Nissan (OTC:NSANY) to restructure their long-standing alliance.

PARIS (Reuters) - Renault (EPA:RENA) group sales in 2022 fell by 5.9% to 2,051,174 vehicles, marking a fourth consecutive annual decline after capacity constraints and supply chain snags, the company said on Wednesday.

The group, which is in the middle of a turnaround, said its order book in Europe was at a record level of 3.5 months of sales.

A day after publishing a 9.4% decline in 2022 sales for its flagship Renault brand, it said that had been partly offset by the performance of its low-cost brand Dacia, which posted a 6.8% increase in sales.

The French carmaker, which was hit harder than most rivals by the COVID-19 crisis and a global chip shortage, is betting on higher-margin and electric cars to boost profits.

The company says it is starting the year with a better portfolio and higher stocks, giving it confidence it can return to sales growth in 2023.

But its executives have acknowledged that global price cuts announced recently by Tesla were an issue that Renault - like rivals - would have to contend with.

Nissan, Renault confident of finalising alliance deal soon

TOKYO (Reuters) -Japanese automaker Nissan (OTC:NSANY) and France's Renault (EPA:RENA) are confident the agreements on reshaping their alliance will be signed soon, they both said on Friday.

They were responding to a report by Japanese news agency Jiji which said the final contract to reboot their alliance may be delayed until April or later due to extended discussion on intellectual property, including for electric vehicles.

"The two companies are currently working well together towards the signature of all the definitive agreements. They are confident this will be reached shortly," Nissan said, a comment echoed in a statement by Renault. Neither gave a date.

After months of intense talks, they agreed in January on a sweeping remake of their two-decade-old alliance that will see Renault reduce its stake in Nissan to 15% from about 43% to put them on equal footing.

The partnership, which has grown to include junior member Mitsubishi Motors (OTC:MMTOF), was founded in 1999.

Nissan and Renault also announced in February that the Japanese automaker would buy a stake of up to 15% in Renault's electric vehicle (EV) unit Ampere.

Renault plugs into premium EV battery deal with start-up Verkor

PARIS (Reuters) -Renault said on Thursday it had entered a long-term commercial partnership with French start-up Verkor to produce batteries for the carmaker's premium and Alpine electric models.

The targeted capacity of 12 gigawatt hours (GWh), enough to power more than 100,000 vehicles, would make Renault (EPA:RENA) the biggest client of Verkor's planned "gigafactory" in Dunkirk, which is aiming for a total capacity for batteries equivalent to 16 GWh.

The move is part of Renault's efforts to secure crucial components and seize control of the value chain of its future unit Ampere, dedicated to electric vehicles and software which it plans to list on the stock market by the end of the year.

Renault shares traded around 1.3% higher after the news, outperforming other stocks listed on the Stoxx Europe 600 Automobiles index, which was up 0.6%.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Verkor has so far raised 360 million euros ($397 million) from investors and is in the process of raising more through equity and debt.

Alpine, Renault's relaunched high-performance sports car brand which also supplies a Formula One racing team, grew its revenues by a third last year, selling just over 3,500 cars. The historic Alpine brand was world rallying champion in 1973.

The first car using the Verkor batteries will be the Alpine C-Crossover GT, which Renault plans to start building in 2025.

Envision AESC, a Japanese subsidiary of Chinese group Envision, will also provide batteries to Renault for use in smaller and less powerful vehicles from another plant located in Douai, also in northern France.

This is targeting an overall capacity of 9 GWh by 2024.

Also in the north of France, ACC - a subsidiary of Renault's domestic rival Stellantis, TotalEnergies and Mercedes - plans to establish a battery plant to deliver 24 GWh of batteries by the end of the decade.

Bogata Europa kupuje drogie auta?

Rynek urósł w stosunku do sytuacji sprzed roku o 16 proc. Widać, że kryzys dostępności aut raczej już słabnie, a klienci coraz chętniej chodzą do salonów i wcale nie słyszą, że na wymarzone auto trzeba czekać dwa lata.

Dacia Sandero jest królem europejskiej sprzedaży jeszcze z jednego powodu: jej sprzedaż w stosunku do kwietnia 2022 roku urosła aż o 44 proc. Wygrała z Volkswagenem T-Rokiem, Oplem Corsą, Renault Clio i Peugeotem 208. Pozostałe miejsca w czołówce zajęły: Fiat 500, Toyota Yaris Cross, Volkswagen Golf, Dacia Duster, Skoda Octavia, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson i Ford Puma.

(Reuters) -China's Geely Automobile Holdings (OTC:GELYF) and French car maker Renault SA (OTC:RNLSY) on Tuesday said they will invest up to 7 billion euros ($7.71 billion) in a new equally held joint venture to develop gasoline engines and hybrid technology for automobiles.

The JV is aimed at manufacturing more efficient internal combustion engines and hybrid systems at a time when the focus of much of the automobile industry has been on the capital-intensive transition to purely electric vehicles.

"We are pleased to be embarking on this journey to become a global leader in hybrid technologies, providing low-emission solutions for automakers around the world," said Eric Li, Geely Holding Group chairman.

The new company will employ 19,000 people at 17 engine plants and five research and development hubs, Renault (EPA:RENA) said.

At launch, it is expected to supply to multiple industrial customers including Volvo, Proton, Nissan (OTC:NSANY), Mitsubishi Motors (OTC:MMTOF), and PUNCH Torino.

The JV aims to have an annual production capacity of up to five million internal combustion, hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines and transmissions, Renault added.

Reuters reported in March that the new venture will see 15 billion euros ($16.53 billion) in annual revenue.

Saudi Aramco (TADAWUL:2222), which signed a letter of intent with Renault and Geely in March, is evaluating a strategic investment in the new company, Renault said.

The Saudi oil producer has been involved in advanced discussions to take a stake of up to 20% in the JV, sources said earlier this year.

Big oil firms have worked with automakers to develop sustainable fuels and hydrogen engines in recent years. But a deal here would make Aramco the first major oil producer to invest in the car business.

The joint venture is expected to be launched in the second half of 2023.
