LONDON (Reuters) -BAE Systems, Britain's biggest defence company, named Cressida Hogg as its next chair on Thursday, as it reported stronger-than-expected half-year results and announced a new share buyback plan.

The builder of combat ships, submarines and fighter jets said Hogg, currently chair at commercial landlord group LandSec, would become chair designate from November, and succeed retiring Roger Carr next year.

BAE said its underlying earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose 8.2% year-over-year to 1.11 billion pounds in the six months to June 30, while sales climbed 5% to 10.58 billion pounds.

The results beat analysts' average expectations for sales of 10.45 billion pounds and underlying EBIT of 1.07 billion pounds, according to company-supplied estimates.

It also said it would buy back shares worth up to 1.5 billion pounds ($1.8 billion) and boost its interim dividend by 5%.

BAE's shares have performed strongly since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, and reached an all-time high of 847 pence earlier this month.

"We see further opportunities to enhance the medium- and long‑term outlook as our customers commit to increased defence spending to address the elevated threat environment," Chief Executive Charles Woodburn said.

The company remained closely engaged with its customers to provide support for mission critical activities as the conflict in Ukraine continued, it said.

Investing.com - BAE Systems reported on Thursday second quarter earnings that missed analysts' forecasts and revenue that fell short of expectations.

BAE Systems announced earnings per share of £0.19 on revenue of £9.74B. Analysts polled by Investing.com anticipated EPS of £20.61 on revenue of £10,439M.

BAE Systems shares are up 12% from the beginning of the year, still down 8.03% from its 52 week high of £847.42 set on July 4. They are outperforming the OMX Helsinki 25 which is down 14.94% from the start of the year.

Investing.com -- Shares in BAE Systems (LON:BAES), the U.K.'s largest defense contractor, rose 2.5% at the open on Tuesday in London as the company reported another strong quarter of orders and raised its full-year profit guidance due to sterling's weakness.

"We are tracking towards a very strong year of order intake," the company said in a statement. New orders hit £10 billion in the three months through September, adding to £18B in the first half of the year. The trend has continued since the end of the reporting period, with the U.K. government signing off on Monday for a £4.2B order for up to eight more Type 26 frigates, while the U.S. military has added another $900 million in orders.

A major test for the U.K. business is due on Thursday, when the government is due to outline its tax and spending plans for the coming years. The war in Ukraine has fostered broad support in parliament for a sustained increase in defense spending at a time when taxes are already high and the pressure on other areas of public spending - notably in health - is increasing.

The company had previously forecast an increase of 2%-4% in sales and 4%-6% in underlying earnings per share, assuming an average exchange rate of $1.38 this year. However, the pound has weakened sharply in the course of the year, inflating the value of BAE's dollar-based contracts. At an average exchange rate of $1.23 for the year, it says sales would rise by 7%-9% and underlying EPS would rise 11%-13%.

While it acknowledged ongoing issues with the supply of microelectronics components, BAE said both sales and margins continued to improve.

"We do not see a material impact from higher energy prices," it added, noting that it is "well hedged in the UK and our other major markets are relatively energy independent."

The company also said it had emerged unscathed from the recent debacle in U.K. debt markets due to the radical tax cut plans of Prime Minister Liz Truss, who was effectively forced out of office by the sharp rise in yields that her plans caused.

BAE said its pension fund surplus "remains intact" and that it has "appropriate liquidity across our funds."

Analysts at Jefferies said the update "shows BAE is benefiting from good order momentum," adding that its new guidance range was slightly ahead of expectations.

BAE Systems said it expects continued growth in 2023 and beyond as countries across the world up their defence budgets in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The defence contractor said that most countries in which it operates have either announced increases in their defence budgets or are planning to do so, because of “the elevated threat environment” following the invasion.

As a result, it expects sales to increase by between 3% and 5% in 2023, with profits to grow by 4-6%.

BAE also increased its three-year cash targets to between £4 billion and £5 billion.

This came as BAE reported its 2022 results. It brought in £23.26 billion for the year in sales, up by 4.4%, and reported profit of £2.48 billion, a 5.5% increase. Both figures were on the upper end of consensus estimates.

BAE also increased its dividend by 7.6% to 27p per share, returning just over £865 million to shareholders.

AVALON, Australia (Reuters) -BAE Systems Australia and another local manufacturer on Tuesday unveiled a new uncrewed military aircraft that will be designed, manufactured and armed in Australia.

The 2.6 meter by 4.5 meter (8.5 foot by 14.8 foot) STRIX uncrewed air system (UAS), launched at the Avalon Air Show, will be capable of air to ground strikes, surveillance and reconnaissance in "high-risk environments".

Work on a prototype is under way, with operational service possible by 2026, said Ben Hudson (NYSE:HUD), chief executive of BAE Systems (OTC:BAESF) Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of BAE Systems, Britain's biggest defence company.

"We’re excited that this is the first UAS of its kind to be developed in Australia and look forward to working with partners across the country to deliver this capability to customers,” Hudson said.

Hudson told Reuters there was strong interest from two unnamed international customers. Asked whether the United States was one of the two, he said: "What I would say is that we need a fuller business case for something like this. And I mean the U.S. market is huge."

Defence contractors are increasingly investing in autonomous technology as militaries look for cheaper and safer ways to maximise resources.

Boeing (NYSE:BA) is designing the MQ-28 Ghost Bat, a fighter-like drone, alongside the Royal Australian Air Force. Announced in 2019, it was the first combat aircraft to be manufactured in Australia in more than 50 years.

BAE Systems Australia programme manager Natalie Waldie said the company has been in touch with the Australian Defence Force, although STRIX was not developed in response to tender.

Developed alongside Perth-based Innovaero, STRIX will be able to carry a payload of up to 160 kilogrammes (353 pounds) over 800 kilometres, and take off and land vertically. It can be stored in shipping containers.

BAE Systems Australia will also deliver a new low-cost precision-guided munition, known as RAZER, usable with STRIX.
