Altria Upgraded to Buy at Goldman, Philip Morris International Affirmed at Buy

Goldman Sachs, seeing value in the tobacco stocks, upgraded Altria (MO - Get Report) to a buy rating from neutral and affirmed Philip Morris International (PM - Get Report) at buy.

Altria shares were trading up 1.4% at $49.96, while PMI shares added 0.8% to $81.92.

Tobacco valuations are "at a 10-year trough despite a more accommodating market backdrop," analyst Judy Hong wrote in a report.

The firm expects the current discount on tobacco stocks "to narrow as cigarette fundamentals hold up better than feared, contribution from next generation tobacco products builds, and regulatory concerns subside over time," she said.

Hong's 12-month price target on Altria, based in Richmond, Va., is $59, indicating a total potential return of 27% including the 6% dividend yield.

Her target on New York-based Philip Morris International is $100, which indicates a 29% potential return.

The bearishness on the tobacco companies reflects factors including lower cigarette volumes and caution about Altria's purchase of 35% of e-cigarette producer Juul for $12.6 billion, Hong wrote.

The analyst expects the decline in cigarette consumption to abate and the shift to e-cigarettes to moderate. And international cigarette volume trends have been mostly stable, Hong wrote.

The firm reported earnings per share of $1.1 on revenue of $5.19B. Analysts polled by Investing.com anticipated EPS of $1.1 on revenue of $5.09B. That compared to EPS of $1.01 on revenue of $4.88B in the same period a year earlier. The company had reported EPS of $0.9 on revenue of $4.39B in the previous quarter.

Altria boosts dividend, to an implied yield of over 7%.
Altria Group Inc. MO, said Thursday it will raise its quarterly dividend by 5%, to 84 cents a share from 80 cents. The cigarette and smokeless tobacco products seller said the new dividend will be payable Oct. 10 to shareholders of record on Sept. 16. The stock was up 0.2% in afternoon trading. Based on current stock prices, the new annual dividend rate would imply a dividend yield of 7.25%, compared with yield on the SPDR Consumer Staples Select Sector ETF XLP, -0.04% of 2.64% and the implied yield on the S&P 500 SPX, -2.59% of 2.00%. Altria's current dividend yield is 6.89%. Altria said it has now reached the 50-year dividend increase milestone, as the latest increase marks the 54th time it has raised its dividend over the past half century. The stock has lost 22% over the past year, while the consumer staples ETF has has climbed 11.6% and the S&P 500 has gained 2.2%.

Philip Morris in talks to merge with Altria

(Reuters) - Philip Morris International Inc (N:PM) and Altria Group Inc (N:MO) said on Tuesday they were in talks for an all-stock merger, potentially reuniting the tobacco giants after more than a decade.

Altria's shares rose over 8% in early trading, while Philip Morris fell 5.5%. At current prices, a merger of the two would create a company with market value of more than $200 billion.

In 2008, Altria spun off the Philip Morris International unit in a move aimed at unlocking the value of the fast-growing unit.

The news comes a day after Wells Fargo analyst Bonnie Herzog said e-cigarette company Juul Labs Inc, in which Altria owns a 35% stake, will have an ideal partner for its international expansion in Philip Morris.
