CVS Health Is Cheap and Poised to Rally on Positive Earnings
https://www.thestreet.com/investing/ear ... s-14869615
When CVS Health Corp. (NYSE: CVS) reported its fourth-quarter financial results early Wednesday, the company said that it had $2.14 in earnings per share (EPS) on $54.42 billion in revenue. That compares to consensus estimates from Thomson Reuters that called for $2.05 in EPS on revenue of $54.58 billion. In the same period of last year, the drug store operator posted EPS of $1.92 and $48.38 billion in revenue.

Revenues in the Pharmacy Services Segment increased 2.2% to approximately $34.89 billion. Pharmacy network claims processed increased 5.6% on a 30-day equivalent basis, to 484.6 million, compared to 458.7 million in the prior year. Revenues in the Retail/LTC Segment increased 5.4% to $22.03 billion.

In terms of guidance for the 2019 full year, CVS expects to see EPS in the range of $6.68 to $6.88. However, the consensus estimates call for $7.41 in EPS and $247.61 billion in revenue for the year.

On the books, CVS cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments totaled $6.58 billion at the end of the quarter, up from $1.81 billion at the end of the previous fiscal year.

The major highlight in this quarter was the completion of the $70 billion Aetna acquisition, which President and CEO Larry Merlo addressed:

With the completion of the Aetna acquisition, we have set the stage for CVS Health to excel in a market that is rapidly transforming. We strongly believe in the long-term value that the full breadth of our capabilities can provide. Our unique combination will drive above-market growth going forward across all of the enterprise. Maintaining our focus on community-level products and services will drive meaningful value for both consumers and payors, while improving our bottom line and the value we return to shareholders. Ultimately, our open platform model allows us to meet the needs of all payors with newly created products and services. We’re more excited than ever about the opportunities that lie ahead.

Shares of CVS Health closed Tuesday at $69.88, in a 52-week range of $60.14 to $82.15. The stock has a consensus price target of $88.57. Following the announcement, the stock was down 7.5% at $64.65 in early trading indications Wednesday.

CVS Health Trims Full-Year Earnings Guidance

CVS Health cuts its full-year per-share earnings guidance amid an earlier-than-expected write-off of debt, though keeps its adjusted guidance intact.
M. COREY GOLDMAN23 MINUTES AGO
CVS Health (CVS) - Get Report on Tuesday cut its full-year per-share earnings guidance amid an earlier-than-expected write-off of debt, though kept its adjusted guidance intact as it continues to see strong revenue in both its retail and healthcare services segments.

Citing “an estimated loss on early extinguishment of debt during the third quarter," CVS cut its full-year earnings outlook to between $5.16 and $5.29 a share from its earlier forecast of between $5.59 and $5.72 a share, though left its adjusted per-share guidance at between 7.14 and $7.27 a share, in line with analysts polled by FactSet.

The Woonsocket, R.I.-based company said it still expects full-year 2020 cash flow from operations of between $11 billion and $11.5 billion.

CVS last month posted stronger-than-expected second quarter earnings and boosted its full-year profit guidance as Aetna sales continued to boost its bottom line.

Retail sales rose 1% to $21.662 billion, as same-store sales accelerated 4.6%, while the healthcare benefits division saw sales rise 6.2% to $18.468 billion as it added Aetna's operations to its legacy business.

However, it also projected higher utilization in its healthcare benefits segment in the second half of 2020 as well as “continued significant Covid-19-related investments, including operating costs, in the remainder of the year.”

CVS last week opened some 2,000 CVS Pharmacy drive-thru locations to children aged 12 years and older as part of its effort to increase access to Covid-19 testing. The company also opened an additional 120 test sites this past Friday.

Shares of CVS were up slightly to $58 in premarket trading on Tuesday. The stock has dropped 22% year to date through Monday, while the S&P 500 has gained 4.7%.

(Reuters) -Drugstore chain owner CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) is in advanced talks to buy home-healthcare company Signify Health Inc for about $8 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter.

CVS is close to clinching the deal which could be announced as early as next week, after beating out other potential buyers including Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) and UnitedHealth Group Inc (NYSE:UNH), who had also been circling Signify for a deal, the source said.

The source, who requested anonymity as the discussions were confidential, cautioned there is still no guarantee that CVS will reach a deal.

The Wall Street Journal reported the talks between CVS and Signify earlier on Friday.

CVS, UnitedHealth, Signify Health and Amazon.com declined to comment.

Signify has been exploring strategic alternatives since earlier this summer, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters previously.

Signify, which went public in early 2021, has struggled since its stock market launch and the company's shares were trading below their IPO price before talks of the sale process were first reported in August.

New York-based private equity firm New Mountain Capital is a significant investor in Signify, having bought a stake in 2017.

Signify offers technology and analytics to help with at-home care for patients. Signify has said its services can help identify potential health risks and gaps in care.

For CVS, a deal with Signify would make strategic sense as it would help potentially improve care and reduce costs by ensuring patients receive the help they need after medical procedures to prevent new hospitalizations, among other things.

CVS Health, Centene lead health insurers lower after 2023 Medicare ratings

(Reuters) -Shares of drugstore operator CVS Health (NYSE:CVS) fell as much as 10% and insurer Centene (NYSE:CNC) slumped 8%, leading declines in major U.S. health insurers after performance ratings for health insurance plans from a federal government program were released.

CVS' largest health insurance plan for Medicare recipients received a lower performance rating, the company said on Thursday, leading to more than $11.6 billion being wiped off its market value by 11:30 a.m. ET on Friday.

The company's shares have fallen more than 13% this year.

Centene, which has fallen more than 10% this year, also lost $3.5 billion of its market value by 11:30 a.m. ET.

Year-over-year declines in Star Ratings were expected due to expiry of the one-time COVID-specific disaster relief program, Oppenheimer analysts said, adding that CVS and Centene were among the biggest decliners.

"CVS will not reduce benefits to offset the impact, meaning the company will fully absorb the 5% margin hit from lost quality bonus payments," according to J.P. Morgan analysts.

Health insurers UnitedHealth Group (NYSE:UNH), Cigna Corp (NYSE:CI), Elevance Health, Alignment Healthcare and Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) also fell between 1% and 3%.

The downward shift in Star Ratings will present sector-wide revenue headwind in 2024, Stephens analysts said, adding that a sharp reduction in Centene and CVS members in 4+ Star plans for 2023 will lead to operational hurdles for both the companies.
