How Best Buy Pulled Ahead With Q4 Earnings

When Best Buy Co. (NYSE: BBY) reported its fiscal fourth-quarter financial results before the markets opened on Wednesday, the electronics retailer said that it had $2.72 in earnings per share (EPS) and $14.8 billion in revenue. This compares with consensus estimates that called for $2.57 in EPS and $14.7 billion in revenue, as well as last year’s posted $2.42 in EPS and $15.36 billion in revenue.

During the most recent quarter, Enterprise comparable sales growth increased 3.0% year over year. This consisted of Domestic comparable sales increasing 3.0% and International comparable sales increasing 2.5%. Domestic comparable online sales grew 9.3%.

From a merchandising perspective, Best Buy generated comparable sales growth across multiple categories, with the largest drivers being wearables, appliances, smart home and gaming. However, these positive drivers were partially offset by a decline in the mobile phone category.

Looking ahead to the fiscal first quarter, Best Buy expects to see EPS in the range of $0.83 to $0.88 and Enterprise revenue between $9.05 billion and $9.15 billion. Consensus estimates call for $0.83 in EPS and $9.18 billion in revenue for the quarter.

Separately, the board of directors approved a new $3 billion share repurchase authorization for the company’s common stock, replacing the existing authorization dated February 2017, which had $1.5 billion in purchases remaining.

Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY) is scheduled to release its fiscal fourth-quarter financial results before the opening bell on Thursday. Analysts are calling for $2.75 in earnings per share (EPS) and $15.06 billion in revenue. The same period of last year reportedly had $2.72 in EPS and $14.8 billion in revenue.

The company previously issued guidance for the fourth quarter, and the company expects to see EPS in the range of $2.65 to $2.75 with Enterprise revenue in between $14.75 billion and $15.15 billion. Comparable sales are expected to grow 0.5% to 3.0%.

In the third quarter, Best Buy saw its domestic revenues grow 2.4% year over year to $8.96 billion. The increase was driven by comparable sales growth of 2.0% and revenue from GreatCall, which was acquired in the third quarter of last year.

Keeping pace in the e-commerce world, domestic online revenue increased 15% to $1.4 billion, primarily due to higher average order values.

During the holiday shopping season, Best Buy offered free next-day delivery on thousands of items all season long with no membership or minimum purchase required. Customers could also choose to pick up their products in a store within an hour of placing their order. The fourth-quarter numbers will be the judge of whether this strategy proved effective.

Excluding Wednesday’s move, Best Buy stock had outperformed the broad markets with a gain of about 35% in the past 52 weeks. In just the past quarter alone, the share price is up roughly 13%.

A few analysts weighed in on Best Buy ahead of the report:

Nomura has a Hold rating and an $81 price target.
Oppenheimer has a Buy rating with a $105 price target.
Morgan Stanley rates it as Equal Weight with an $85 target.
Guggenheim has a Buy rating with a $100 target price.
The Jefferies Buy rating comes with a $101 price target.

Best Buy Price Target Up at Raymond James Before Earnings

Raymond James analyst Matthew McClintock lifted his price target for Best Buy to $135 from $100 before the electronics retailer reports Tuesday.

Best Buy (BBY) - Get Report shares rose after Raymond James analyst Matthew McClintock lifted his share-price target for the electronics retailer to $135 from $100 ahead of the company’s earnings report Tuesday.

The $135 level is the highest on Wall Street, Bloomberg reports. McClintock affirmed his strong buy rating. The new target indicates 18% upside from the stock's closing price Friday at $114.

Best Buy shares recently traded at $117.14, up 2.8%. The stock has jumped 33% year to date. That compares with a 5% increase for the S&P 500 index during that period.

The Richfield, Minn., electronics retailer said last month that for the period during which it was reopening stores - June 15 through July 18 - its sales rose 15% from a year earlier.

McClintock wrote in a commentary that his earnings estimates are “well above consensus,” Bloomberg reports. He predicted second-quarter earnings per share of $1.22 with comparable sales rising 6%.

Second-half comparisons should benefit from sustained growth in tech-related spending and growing demand for videogames, home theater and mobile phones, he said.

Telsey, which rates Best Buy shares outperform, forecasts quarterly sales growth of 3.9% to $9.9 billion, on comparable-sales growth of 4.5%, Bloomberg reports.

Telsey expects Best Buy to keep thriving on work-from-home and remote-learning trends, its growing services and health-care businesses; and new gaming-console launches later in 2020.

RBC rates Best Buy sector perform. Positive sales trends have “largely continued or even improved further,” thanks to extension of work-from-home policies and preparation for remote education, RBC said, according to Bloomberg. It predicts Best Buy’s expenses will trail recent levels, as a result of furloughs.
