Tesla Looking to Make 5 Semi Trucks Per Week in Nevada
Tesla's volume production of its semi truck is to take place at its Austin location.

Tesla (TSLA) - Get Report is reportedly building a new Tesla semi-truck production line at a new building near its Gigafactory Nevada plant, and the electric vehicle maker plans to produce five electric trucks per week.

Shares of Palo Alto, Calif., company at last check were climbing 2.7% to $628.38.

Stocks Fall and Treasury Yields Rise on Prospects for Swifter Recovery

Tesla is building the vehicles in the industrial park where its Nevada Gigafactory is located, according to Electrek, which cited sources familiar with the matter.

The company plans volume production of the semi at its Austin location.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tesla recently clinched a contract to supply 10 electric semi-trucks and two megachargers with roughly $2 million in U.S. government support, Electrek reported.

MHX Leasing, a California-based logistics company, reportedly secured $1.9 million to acquire 10 Tesla semi class 8 trucks, and $560,000 to buy two overhead electric cranes form the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee.

The committee provides funding for clean transportation on California’s southern coast.

How to Trade Virgin Galactic as ARK Launches Space Exploration ETF

Separately Tesla Founder and Chief Executive Elon Musk warned Tuesday that a shortage in battery cell supplies could hamper his company's ability to scale-up production of the semi truck.

Musk said that demand for the trucks is "no problem ... but near-term cell supply makes it hard to scale Semi." He adding that 'this limitation will be less onerous next year."

Meanwhile, Musk's other company, SpaceX, saw the prototype of its Starship SN11, which is being designed for an eventual trip to Mars, crash during a landing attempt Tuesday.

The prototype spacecraft launched from SpaceX's facility in Boca Chica, Texas, under a dense cover of fog, flying at an altitude of 32,000 feet, according to U.K. newspaper Express.

Musk tweeted SpaceX needs engineers, technicians, builders, and other workers in and around the Brownsville area of Texas.

Tesla Stock Surges On This
Tesla stock was up more than 3% after scoring an analyst upgrade. It is now closing in on its 50-day moving average. If it retakes this key technical benchmark, it could serve as an aggressive entry

Canaccord Genuity analyst Jed Dorsheimer upgraded Tesla stock to buy from hold, and increased his price target to 1,071 from 419.

Tesla stock was upgraded due to its expanding range of products, which are extending the firm's reach beyond EVs.

"Tesla's focus on first-principle engineering we believe will radically change the battery market, enabling the company to further the lead in BEVs and expand into the solar and home energy markets with its Powerwall products," Dorsheimer said in a research note.

The analyst also said his data suggests Tesla has "ramped home energy generation and storage campaigns already, building demand and leveraging its brand."

Tesla Cars Don't Need Drivers: Consumer Reports
Paul Ausick
April 23, 2021 9:37 am
Following a Texas crash that killed two occupants of a Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model S sedan, initial reports from the county constable stated that there was no one in the driver’s seat at the time of the crash.

In a tweet following the crash, CEO Elon Musk responded to a comment on a Wall Street Journal story about the “driverless” crash: “Data logs recovered so far show Autopilot was not enabled & this car did not purchase FSD [full self-driving]. Moreover, standard Autopilot would require lane lines to turn on, which this street did not have.”

On Thursday, Consumer Reports magazine noted “how easy it is to defeat Autopilot’s driver monitoring.” Using the magazine’s own Autopilot-equipped Model Y SUV, Consumer Reports posted a video of a test showing the ease with which a test driver was able to defeat the autopilot system.

Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports’ senior director of auto testing said, “In our evaluation, the system not only failed to make sure the driver was paying attention, but it also couldn’t tell if there was a driver there at all.”

Fisher also noted that Tesla is not keeping up with the latest developments in driver assistance systems: “Tesla is falling behind other automakers like GM and Ford that, on models with advanced driver assist systems, use technology to make sure the driver is looking at the road.”

While Tesla’s vehicles perform well in many of the magazine’s tests, the company needs to pay more attention to driver monitoring. Fisher concluded that Tesla has “changed the EV market and made the idea of owning an EV far more attractive than ever before. But they seem to be using their customers as development engineers as they work on self-driving technologies, and they need to do a better job of keeping them safe.”

Tesla Earnings Beat On Bitcoin, Regulatory Credit Sales, Musk Blasts 'Extremely Deceptive' Media Reports

ADELIA CELLINI LINECKER06:42 PM ET 04/26/2021

Tesla (TSLA) topped first-quarter earnings estimates late Monday after more than doubling deliveries for the period, while sales of Bitcoin and regulatory credits totaled nearly $800 million. Tesla stock fell late.

CEO Elon Musk, speaking on earnings call with analysts, said media reports of a recent fatal accident were "extremely deceptive." Another executive claimed that someone was in the driver seat, in contrast to reporters quoting law enforcement.

Tesla Earnings
Estimates: Analysts polled by Zacks Investment Research expected Tesla earnings per share of 79 cents, a 216% year-over-year surge. Sales were seen jumping 66% to $9.92 billion.

Results: Tesla earnings swelled 304% to 93 cents as revenue leapt 74% $10.39 billion. The EV giant faced easy comparisons from Q1 2020, when the coronavirus crisis first hit. The Shanghai plant was just ramping up Model 3 production. In Q1 2021, Shanghai began delivering the made-in-China Model Y for the first time.

Revenue from regulatory credits jumped 46% to $518 million. Tesla recorded proceeds from sales of digital assets of $272 million and net digital assets of $1.33 billion on the balance sheet. Tesla bought $1.5 billion in Bitcoin in February.

CFO Zach Kirkhorn explained the Bitcoin investment on the Tesla earnings call with analysts. "Elon and I thought it was a good place to place some of our cash that's not being used currently and get a good return."

Average sales price fell 13% on lower Model S and Model X deliveries due to product updates and as lower-priced China-made vehicles became a larger percentage of the mix. Tesla delivered 184,800 vehicles in Q1, up 109% and beating estimates for 168,000.

In California, Model Y production continued to ramp and is approaching full capacity. In Texas, the factory remains on track to start production and deliveries late this year. In China, the Shanghai factory continues to increase production and recently reached a domestic supply sourcing ratio of over 90%. The Gigafactory Berlin is still on track for production and deliveries in late 2021.

Outlook: Tesla reaffirmed its delivery forecast from January, when it predicted 50% average annual growth in vehicle deliveries, with 2021 expected to be faster than that pace. In 2020, deliveries grew 36% to 499,647.

On the Tesla earnings conference call, CEO Elon Musk said deliveries of the updated Model S "Plaid" would probably start next month, but high-volume production wouldn't start until Q3. Model X production also would ramp up in Q3. He predicted production will top 2,000 Model S/X per week, perhaps above 2,400 depending on global supply chain issues.

On the Q4 2020 earnings call in January, Musk said that Model S deliveries would likely start in February. However, Tesla made no Model S or X vehicles in Q1 as it updates those upscale EVs.

Musk said Tuesday night that Tesla faced unexpected challenges with the Plaid versions, saying it took a lot of work to make the battery pack safe.

Tesla added that Semi deliveries will begin in 2021 but didn't mention Cybertruck.

Musk said he expects "limited" production from the Berlin and Austin plants this year.
