Is Snap Stock on the Rebound?

Although Snap Inc. (NYSE: SNAP) stock has sold off in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, this online chat platform may offer an investment avenue to ride out this pandemic.

It is safe to say the markets are in bear territory now, and some are suggesting this will be a recession. Some of the big bears are even calling this the beginning of a depression. However, some companies may have a quicker route out of this crisis than others do. Companies that primarily operate online or have small supply chains may have the best chances at this, and social media companies are at the heart of that.

It’s not that hard to see that the stay-at-home economy has been the biggest winner from this coronavirus pandemic. As more people are practicing social distancing, and some even quarantining, these stocks have responded in kind.

Social media may not necessarily be a large part of this economy, but if people were checking Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at work, you can be sure they’re doing this at home much more.

What Snap Does
Snap’s primary product, Snapchat, was originally released in 2011. It was built to allow users to send pictures or videos with messages that were only available to other people using Snapchat. The messages only lasted for a short time, though the duration was lengthened in 2017.

In 2012, as Snapchat began to get global exposure, CEO and founder Evan Spiegel wrote: “Snapchat isn’t about capturing the traditional Kodak moment. It’s about communicating with the full range of human emotion — not just what appears to be pretty or perfect.” Mass communications with still photos did not have to be the standard anymore.

Snap’s platform as a photo-sharing and chat service likely will benefit from this outbreak as more users sign up. Although Snap doesn’t occupy the social media high ground like Facebook, it does have a fairly young demographic of users that are fiercely loyal to the platform.

At the end of the third quarter of last year, 53% of Snapchat users were between the ages of 15 and 25. Another 34% were between 26 and 35 years old. If schools or universities continue to be shut down in the United States, as they have been in Italy, then Snap could be a winner here. However, this all depends on user growth.

Building the Base to Bounce
For any company to be viable in the long term, it has to have solid fundamentals, and these fundamentals are built on quarterly results. When Snap released its most recent quarterly report in early February, it showed a bottom-line beat. Even though investors were not satisfied with the results, moving toward profitability was a much-needed change for the company.

For that quarter, Snap posted $0.03 in earnings per share and $561 million in revenue, which compared with Wall Street consensus estimates of $0.01 per share and $563.03 million, respectively. The quarterly results were a big step forward from a year ago, when Snap had a net loss of $0.04 per share and $389.82 million in revenue.

24/7 Wall St.
Why Tilray Stock Is Soaring Again After a Terrible Year
The company also had other notable increases. Its daily active users swelled to 218 million from 187 million last year, and average revenue per user grew 23% year over year to $2.58. Key takeaways here are that Snap is seeing solid user growth, monetizing its users better and seeing solid growth in ad revenue. The path to profitability is through these metrics.

The broader markets have not made up their minds yet, and calling a bottom is tricky. Snap has seen shares pull back 23% or so since February 25. However, with these fundamentals in place, Snap has established a solid base for a bounce.

Cash Burn
There have been concerns in the past about this company’s cash burn rate, at least among analysts. For years, analyst ratings for this stock have been less than favorable, but this could all turn around, and quickly. If these quarterly fundamentals hold up and continue, cash burn concerns will be a thing of the past. At this point, Snap can focus more on its ad spending and on growing its user base even more.

Snap Soars on User & Ad Growth as We Have Too Much Time on our Hands

By Christiana Sciaudone

Investing.com -- Snap is soaring almost 30% after reporting way better-than-expected results.

Daily active users jumped 18% in the third quarter from a year earlier, and revenue soared 52%, to $679 million, which beat the estimate of $551 million. The loss per share of 14 cents was better than the expected loss of 18 cents.

The stock received a slew of analyst price target upgrades upon releasing its results.

Jefferies (NYSE:JEF) maintained a buy rating on the shares and bumped its price target to $41 from $33, saying the stock remains a top pick, and guidance for the fourth quarter seems achievable given third quarter growth, according to StreetInsider.

Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) maintained its equal-weight rating and boosted its price target to $36 from $25, and pointed to the bullish read across peers, including Pinterest (NYSE:PINS), as Snap (NYSE:SNAP)'s results could lead to even larger high margin ad beats compared to expectations, StreetInsider said.

The market seems to agree, driving Pinterest higher by 14%. The stock also got upgraded by Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS), to buy from neutral, and with a price target of $61, up from $37. The analyst cited strong user growth and advertiser demand that has increased for Pinterest, Twitter and Snap, StreetInsider reported.

Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) also upgraded Pinterest to buy from neutral, setting a $58 price target, up from $45, citing Snap's results.

Snap just announced the launch of Spotlight, a Snapchat feature that functions like TikTok and Instagram Reels.
Spotlight will show users the top snaps that have been submitted for consideration by the app’s more than 249 million daily users in a feed that they can swipe or tap through.
Spotlight will not include ads at launch, but the company expects to introduce ads to the product in the coming months, a Snap spokesman said.

Snap (NYSE:SNAP) shares plunged more than 14% after-hours following the company’s reported Q4 results, highlighted by slowing revenue growth as digital ad struggles continue.

Q4 EPS came in at $0.14, better than the consensus estimate of $0.11. Revenue was flat year-over-year at $1.3 billion (up 2% year-over-year on a constant currency basis), in line with consensus estimates.

According to the company, Q4 materialized largely as expected, with weaker demand from its brand-oriented advertising business, which declined 11% year-over-year, while its DR business performed relatively better, up 4% year-over-year.

DAUs grew 17% year-over-year to 375 million in Q4. DAUs increased sequentially and year-over-year in each of North America, Europe, and Rest of World.

In a letter to investors, Snap said 2022 was a challenging year, as it continued to experience the impact of macroeconomic headwinds, platform policy changes, and increased competition.

For Q1/23, the company expects DAUs in the range of 382-384M. On the monetization side, the company anticipates that the operating environment will remain challenging, as it expects the headwinds faced over the past year to persist throughout Q1.

Given uncertainties related to the operating environment, the company didn’t provide expectations for revenue or adjusted EBITDA for Q1. The company observed a year-over-year decline in revenue of approximately 7% quarter-to-date. Its internal forecast assumes revenue to decline 2%-10% year-over-year in Q1.

(Reuters) - Photo messaging app-owner Snap Inc (NYSE:SNAP) on Tuesday beat Wall Street targets for quarterly revenue and user growth, but gave weaker third quarter guidance than analysts had expected as it works to compete with tech giants for advertising dollars.

Snap, which owns the Snapchat app, has attracted hundreds of millions of users thanks to its lighthearted photo filters and more recently, an AI-powered chatbot that can answer questions. However, it has struggled to consistently grow revenue and catch up to rivals like Facebook-owner Meta Platforms, prompting questions from analysts and investors about its strategy.

Revenue for the second quarter ended June 30 was $1.07 billion, beating analyst expectations of $1.05 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

The Santa Monica, California-based company said it estimates third quarter revenue will be between $1.07 billion to $1.13 billion. Analysts were expecting revenue of $1.13 billion, at the top end of the guidance range.

Changes to its platform to adjust advertisements took a toll, but Snap told Wall Street it is seeing benefits now.

Earlier this year, Snap updated its machine learning model to serve more relevant promotions to users, which Snap said in the short term caused a small number of its largest advertisers to see fewer "actions," such as users tapping on ads, than they did previously

Advertisers are beginning to see results from the changes, which led to a more than 30% increase in "purchase-related conversions" compared to the first quarter, Snap said its Tuesday letter to investors.

Daily active users on Snapchat rose 14% year-over-year to 397 million, beating Wall Street expectations of 394.8 million.

Snap said it expects between 405 million to 406 million daily active users in the third quarter. Analysts had forecast 406.2 million users, according to Refinitiv data.

More than 150 million people have sent more than 10 billion messages to My AI, a ChatGPT-powered bot that was launched in February.

Conversations with My AI will help Snap learn more about user interests and lead to more relevant ads, the company said, adding it is beginning to test sponsored links in My AI's responses.

Snap's net loss was $377 million during the second quarter, narrowing from a net loss of $422 million the previous year.
