Audi CEO hopes for chip supply stabilisation by summer 2022

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Volkswagen (DE:VOWG_p)'s premium carmaker Audi expects chip supplies to remain tight at least until summer 2022, Chief Executive Markus Duesmann told German newspaper Augsburger Allgemeine.

"We hope that we can reach a stabilisation with regard to production and chip deliveries at the end of the first half of 2022," Duesmann, who also sits on the management board of Volkswagen, was quoted as saying.

Volkswagen last week cut its outlook for deliveries, toned down sales expectations and warned of job cuts as a shortage of computer chips caused Europe's largest carmaker to report lower-than-expected operating profit for the third quarter.

Duesmann told Reuters last month that Audi had to troubleshoot on a day-to-day basis to tackle the ongoing shortage of auto chips, calling the situation "a perfect storm".

Audi przejmuje McLarena? Transakcja, która może wstrząsnąć F1
Audi jest bliskie przejęcia McLarena - twierdzą brytyjskie media. Niemcy mieliby przejąć działy odpowiedzialne m.in. za motoryzację i zespół F1. Ułatwiłoby to wejście Audi do królowej motorsportu, o czym mówi się od pewnego czasu.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Volkswagen (ETR:VOWG_p)'s Audi has filed a lawsuit in a Munich court against Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio (NYSE:NIO) over an alleged infringement of Audi's trademark rights, German newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Thursday.

According to Audi, Nio's decision to name two of its models ES6 and infringes Audi's trademark for its own model designations S6 and S8, Handelsblatt reported.

A Nio spokesperson declined to comment.

A spokesperson for Audi was not immediately available for comment to Reuters.

Nio, a premium brand which so far has made most of its sales in China, entered the Norwegian market in May last year and plans to launch in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark before the end of the year.

The company started sales in Norway with the ES8 model but has said it plans to launch in Germany with the ET7 electric sedan.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -Mexico's environment ministry said on Friday it rejected a key environmental permit for a solar power plant that German automaker Audi has proposed to build at its factory in the central Mexican state of Puebla.

Audi's proposed environmental impact statement for the photovoltaic power plant, sent to officials in late May, was denied because it requires a regional analysis given additional electrical infrastructure that will be needed, the ministry said in a brief statement.

"From their initial conception, these types of projects require the establishment of a power station, an electric substation and internal transmission lines," it said.

The ministry added it will evaluate any new environmental impact statement for the solar plant that Audi submits.

Audi is a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG (OTC:VWAGY).

Audi Mexico said the solar panels it hoped to build were intended for self-consumption only and would be used "exclusively to carry out part of the power consumption that enable the global production of the Audi Q5."

"Audi Mexico is highly respectful of all legal requirements in the country, so it's cross-checking the authorization of the already existing transmission station with the delivery of the additional documentation requested by the competent authorities," the company told Reuters in a statement on Saturday.

BERLIN (Reuters) - German carmaker Audi is in favour of offering employees one-off tax-free payments instead of permanent wage increases, its human resources director said, as unions across Europe's biggest economy demand higher wages in light of rising inflation.

Workers' purchasing power in Germany has already taken a hit, with consumer price inflation at 11.6% in October. Employers, however, do not see much scope for wage increases due to the rising costs of material and energy.

German union IG Metall has called for strikes among metal and electrical industry workers that started on Saturday night at some companies as it demands 8% wage hike for 3.8 million employees in the country's largest industry sector.

The union rejected an employers' offer of 3,000 euros payment spread over 30 months as a temporary solution to help workers cope with inflation.

But such payment could be a way to reach an agreement, Audi HR Director Xavier Ros said, adding that responding to rising consumer prices with significant wage increases would harm the economy in the long-term.

"What we have to discuss is the question of how sustainable such a significant wage increase is when we are talking about a temporary problem," Ros was quoted as saying by German weekly Automobilwoche.

Audi, a Volkswagen (ETR:VOWG_p) Group brand, is not itself a direct partner in the wage negotiations, but it adopts the talks outcomes in a collective wage agreement.

"The situation is difficult, and that's why I understand that these negotiations are more complicated than usual," Ros added.

Audi will not cut EV prices to follow Tesla's lead - Audi Europe chief

BERLIN (Reuters) - Audi has no plans to cut prices for its electric vehicles, German industry magazine Automobilwoche cited Audi Europe chief Jens Puttfarcken as saying, despite a similar move by market leader Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) that has put pressure on others to follow suit.

"We have our very own pricing policy," Puttfarcken was cited as saying. "We take such a step when it is necessary for the Audi brand."

MUNICH (Reuters) - Former Audi boss Rupert Stadler accepted his role in committing fraud by negligence in the diesel emissions scandal, according to a statement made in German court on Tuesday, having agreed early in May to a deal which would get him a suspended sentence.

The former CEO has been on trial for fraud since 2020 over his role in the scandal after parent group Volkswagen (ETR:VOWG_p) and Audi admitted in 2015 to having used illegal software to cheat on emissions tests. Stadler had previously rejected the allegations.

Stadler's defence lawyer Ulrike Thole-Grolle read a statement to the court, saying the defendant did not know that vehicles had been manipulated and buyers had been harmed, but he recognised it was a possibility and accepted that.

"I understand that for my part, there was a need for more care," said the lawyer on Stadler's behalf.

Asked by the judge whether the words were his own, Stadler replied: "Yes".

The statement had been widely expected after the judge said earlier this month that Stadler would face a suspended prison sentence of 1.5-2 years and a fine of 1.1 million euros if he were to confess to a charge of fraud by negligence. The verdict is expected in June.

The trial is one of the most prominent court proceedings in the aftermath of the diesel scandal at Volkswagen and its subsidiary Audi. Revelations that millions of emissions tests had been manipulated emerged in September 2015.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -German carmaker Audi is this month scheduled to announce plans to begin producing electric vehicles in Mexico, according to three people with knowledge of the matter, joining other major carmakers in ramping up EV output in Mexico.

Asked to comment, a spokesman in Germany said the company had no such plans.

Audi, a unit of Volkswagen (ETR:VOWG_p), has since 2016 made the Audi Q5, a compact SUV, in the central Mexican state of Puebla, and later added a hybrid version.

An announcement on Audi's EV expansion plans is due to be made July 18 at its plant in San Jose Chiapa, Puebla, according to people familiar with the matter.

Top management from Germany is expected to attend the event surrounding what is likely to be a major investment, they said.

An Audi spokesman in Germany said no specific announcement was planned in Mexico.

"There is no announcement planned, and we cannot confirm any business trips or announcements," the spokesman said.

Audi's goal is for each of its global production sites, including Mexico, to make at least one EV by 2030, he added.

The state is also home to a Volkswagen auto plant, one of the biggest in Mexico, and numerous parts suppliers.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said last month more investments were soon expected in Puebla's auto industry. It was unclear how much Audi plans to invest.

Puebla's economy ministry did not respond to requests for comment. Volkswagen in Mexico declined to comment.

Both Audi and Volkswagen have outlined broad goals for boosting their EV production worldwide. Volkswagen last year said it would invest more than $7 billion in the next five years in North America, including for EV production.

In Mexico, Volkswagen last year announced a $763 million investment to upgrade the Puebla plant, including a new paint division running on electric energy.

Last year, Mexico's then-Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said during a tour of Audi's Puebla plant that he looked forward to more investment from the company as Mexico steps up production of more environmentally friendly cars.

Mexican officials and company executives discussed growth plans at the plant, as well as the transition underway at the whole group for producing "solely completely electric cars in the future," Audi said in a statement at the time.

Chinese automaker SAIC Motor Corp Ltd (SS:600104) on Thursday officially announced a partnership with German luxury car company Audi to fast-track the advancement of electric vehicles through collaborative efforts.

"All stakeholders agree that the Chinese auto market is in the midst of the biggest transformation in its history, therefore we will jointly work on a strategic approach that guarantees our future success,” SAIC said, without elaborating on the details of the agreement.

Earlier reports suggested that Audi was in talks with SAIC to acquire the electric vehicle platform of SAIC's premium electric vehicle unit, IM Motors. The collaboration between the two companies could potentially involve SAIC Volkswagen's (ETR:VOWG_p) second factory situated in Anting Town, Jiading District, Shanghai, according to insiders familiar with the matter.

Audi's initiative to enter the electric vehicle market encountered obstacles as VW Group's software issues caused significant delays in the release of essential electric models, including the Q6 E-tron. Additionally, plans for Audi's ambitious autonomous flagship electric car, the Artemis project, were eventually scrapped by VW Group, hindering Audi's progress in the EV sector.
