(Reuters) - Russia's justice ministry added Facebook-owner Meta Platforms to its register of extremist organisations on Friday, the Kommersant newspaper reported.

A Russian court earlier this year ruled Meta had engaged in "extremist activity". Moscow has restricted access to Facebook (NASDAQ:META) and Instagram as part of a campaign against Western social media platforms.

Meta gets green light to launch WhatsApp merchant payment system in Brazil

Brazil’s central bank, on Thursday, approved the launch of Meta Platforms' (NASDAQ:META) payments for small and medium-sized businesses in Brazil via its messaging application WhatsApp. The approval builds on the platform's already existing local peer-to-peer payment system.

The approval comes as Meta seeks to use the Brazilian market as a key test space for business messaging, an area that has assumed greater urgency as Meta's core advertising business has stalled.

"Soon, WhatsApp users will be able to pay for products and services directly in a conversation with Mastercard (NYSE:MA) and Visa (NYSE:V) debit and credit cards," Guilherme Horn, head of WhatsApp Latin America, said in a Linkedin post.

Shortly after the central bank's greenlight, Meta's chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said on his Instagram broadcast channel that "people will be able to pay small businesses right on WhatsApp".

"Excited to roll this out soon," Zuckerberg said.

Shares of META are up 5.82% in mid-day trading on Friday.

In an update to staff, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg told employees he would begin restructuring plans focused on flattening teams, canceling lower priority projects, and reducing hiring rates.

“This will be tough and there’s no way around that. It will mean saying goodbye to talented and passionate colleagues who have been part of our success,” he said.

Zuckerberg added: “At this point, I think we should prepare ourselves for the possibility that this new economic reality will continue for many years. Higher interest rates lead to the economy running leaner, more geopolitical instability leads to more volatility, and increased regulation leads to slower growth and increased costs of innovation.”

(Reuters) - WhatsApp has granted users one of its most awaited features - the ability to edit messages.

"For the moments when you make a mistake or simply change your mind, you can now edit your sent messages on WhatsApp," the Meta Platforms Inc-owned messaging app said in a blog post on Monday.

With the feature rolling out globally in the coming weeks, senders will be able to modify their messages within 15 minutes of hitting send.

The function can be accessed by long-pressing the message and choosing "edit" in the drop-down menu. The modified message will carry the label "edited", without showing edit history.

Competing apps such as Telegram and Signal already allow users to edit messages, while microblogging site Twitter rolled out the ability to edit tweets to select users last year.

Wielki start Threads rozpoczął się w czwartek w nocy polskiego czasu. Sytuację na bieżąco monitoruje sam Mark Zuckerberg, który ciągle wrzuca wiadomości o postępach w rejestracjach. Robi to oczywiście wpisami na Threads.

Jak raportował, 2 miliony osób zarejestrowały się w nowej aplikacji w zaledwie dwie godziny po debiucie. Potem było to już 5 milionów kont w siedem godzin od startu. Około 8 rano naszego czasu Zuckerberg z dumą ogłosił, że Threads mają już 10 milionów użytkowników, co udało się osiągnąć w ok. 7 godzin.

Threads wystartowało jednocześnie w Stanach Zjednoczonych oraz Wielkiej Brytanii, a głównym źródłami dystrybucji są sklepy Apple App Store i Google Play Store. Jak dodają media, sklep Apple pozwalał użytkownikom na „zamówienie” aplikacji jeszcze przed premierą, dzięki czemu zostali oni natychmiast poinformowani o jej dostępności.

Serwis wydaje się dość głęboko powiązany z Instagramem, bo popularna platforma Meta promuje obecnie swoją „siostrę” banerami i powiadomieniami. Co więcej, na profilach na Instagramie pojawiły się też nazwy użytkowników z Threads.

Komentatorzy przypominają, że przy starcie nowej aplikacji użytkowników zdobywać można dość łatwo. Dużo trudniejszym zadaniem jest skłonienie ich, by zostali w danym serwisie na dłużej, zamiast wrócić do Twittera po paru dniach. Jednocześnie Zuckerberg nie mógł mieć jednak lepszej sytuacji do startu Threads. Twitter wprowadził bowiem niedawno drastyczne zmiany, które wywołały wielki bunt wśród użytkowników.

Kiedy Threads w Polsce? Musimy jeszcze poczekać
Choć w Threads mogą się już bawić Amerykanie i Brytyjczycy, to niestety aplikacja nie jest obecnie dostępna w Europie. Rzecznik Meta zapowiedział ten fakt regulatorowi w Irlandii jeszcze przed wielką premierą serwisu społecznościowego.

Jak zaznaczyła firma, Wielka Brytania „nie podlega w pełni przepisom RODO i zapisom dot. prywatności funkcjonującym na terytorium Unii Europejskiej”. Właśnie dlatego mieszkańcy Wysp Brytyjskich mogą cieszyć się aplikacją już teraz.

Anonimowe źródła serwisu Engadget dodają, że Meta może opóźniać start Threads w UE ze względu na nowe przepisy. W przyszłym roku w życie wejdzie bowiem prawo Digital Markets Act (DMA). Firma Zuckerberga podobno chce zaś być absolutnie pewna, że nowa aplikacja spełnia wszystkie wymogi aktu o rynkach cyfrowych.

Morgan Stanley raised the price target for Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) to $150 from $140 and Meta Platforms Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) to $350 from $300 in a note Thursday, maintaining an Overweight rating on both stocks.

MS analysts told investors that near-term fundamentals leave them bullish on both, with GOOGL "best positioned to disrupt itself," while it also trades at a 40% FCF discount to Meta.

"We expect search to fundamentally change, but change will take time, and our analysis of 3 key AI success factors still put GOOGL in the best position to disrupt/improve its own business," they said.

"Material behavior change will take time and innovation...and in the near-term, we see a path toward $7.00 of '24 EPS and a $150 PT," they added. "As discussed it is still early in AI adoption, and it will likely require new innovation and tools to further accelerate adoption. This, in our view, should help GOOGL manage the user and behavior transition and minimize near-term impacts on revenue and monetization."

On Meta, the analysts said they believe it could roll out new AI-driven tools that create new revenue streams and disrupt search.

"We fully expect META to integrate new large language models into its applications to drive new capabilities for users and advertisers, but changing behavior and material success are less certain, and online advertising doesn't have to be zero-sum," they said, warning investors not to underestimate the execution difficulty.
