Ryanair breaks its September traffic record

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ryanair flew 15.9 million passengers in September, its third busiest month ever and up 13% on pre-COVID levels as the low-cost carrier consolidates its position as Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers.

The jump in traffic meant Ryanair also flew more passengers in September than in any of its busiest summer months before the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Until this year, its busiest month was August 2019 when it carried 14.9 million passengers.

The Irish airline, which unlike many airlines kept its pilots and crew up-to-date with their flying hours during the pandemic to take advantage of the swift rebound this year, flew a record 16.9 million passengers in August 2022.

The average proportion of empty seats per flight rose last month to 6%, up from 4% in August and 3% in September 2019.

Ryanair expects to fly 166.5 million passengers in the year to the end of March, significantly ahead of its previous annual record of 149 million reached before the pandemic brought the travel industry to a standstill.

DUBLIN (Reuters) -Ryanair on Monday posted its largest ever after-tax profit for the first half of its financial year, which includes the key summer months, and said it expected to return to pre-COVID annual profit levels of at least 1 billion euros ($993.80 million) this year.

The recovery in traffic and profitability is likely to continue to be "very strong" for at least the next three years allowing the Irish airline, already Europe's largest by passenger numbers, to make major market share gains, Chief Executive Michael O'Leary said.

Ryanair earned 1.371 billion euros ($1.36 billion) in the six months to the end of September. While that was just short of a forecast of 1.385 billion in a company poll of analysts, it was well ahead of its previous first-half record of 1.29 billion euros in the six months to end-September 2017.

While the winter will be loss-making, Ryanair expects an after-tax profit of between 1 billion and 1.2 billion euros for the year to March 31, though that forecast remains "hugely dependent" on no adverse shocks.

"Concerns about the impact of recession and rising consumer price inflation on Ryanair’s business model have been greatly exaggerated in recent months," O'Leary said in a statement.

"We expect these strong fundamentals will continue to underpin robust traffic and average fare growth for the next 18-months at least," he said. In a pre-recorded video presentation he predicted very strong growth in profit and traffic over the next three years assuming oil prices remain relatively stable.

The combination of 15% traffic growth and a 14% fare rise was something he said he had never seen in all his years in the industry, O'Leary said, referring to second-quarter numbers.

Bookings in November and December remain strong but the airline said it had very little visibility for the first three months of 2023.

Several rivals have provided relatively upbeat guidance in recent weeks with Wizz Air, British Airways-owner IAG (LON:ICAG) and Lufthansa all saying they were seeing continued strength in ticket sales despite inflation fears.

Ryanair, which unlike many airlines kept its pilots and crew up-to-date with their flying hours during the pandemic to take advantage of the swift rebound, flew a record 95 million passengers in the six months to the end of September.

It increased its passenger forecast for its financial year to 168 million from 166.5 million, significantly ahead of its previous annual record of 149 million reached before the pandemic brought the travel industry to a standstill.

However, O'Leary warned that he was concerned that Boeing (NYSE:BA) may deliver only 40 to 45 of a promised 51 737 MAX aircraft in time for next summer.

Chief Financial Officer Neil Sorahan said passenger numbers would hopefully rise to 185 million next year.

Ryanair (NASDAQ:RYAAY), one of Europe's and the world's largest low-cost airlines has officially placed an order for up to 300 of Boeing's (NYSE:BA) 737 MAX 10 jets, bringing an end to years of negotiations between the two companies.

The deal, made up of 150 firm orders with options for another 150 jets, is worth up to $40 billion at current list prices, and serves as yet another boost to the planemaker's efforts to restore the image and financial viability of its 737 MAX program, following two deadly crashes and over a year of grounding.

The new jets are set to be delivered between 2027 and 2033, and will pave the way for the low-cost carrier to nearly double its traffic from 168 million now, to 300M by March 2034.

"Ryanair is pleased to sign this record aircraft order for up to 300 MAX-10s with our aircraft partner Boeing. These new, fuel efficient, greener technology aircraft offer 21% more seats, burn 20% less fuel and are 50% quieter than our B737-NGs," said Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary, with his Boeing counterpart Dave Calhoun adding, "We are committed to delivering for Ryanair and helping Europe's largest airline group achieve its goals by offering its customers the lowest fares in Europe."

Ryanair also has an outstanding order for 737 MAX 200s, a smaller version of the jet, with nearly 100 unfilled slots, to be delivered thru 2025.

The deal has long been in the making with on and off negotiations since before the pandemic.

The transaction will be subject to shareholder approval at Ryanair's AGM on September 14, 2023.

Shares of BA are gaining nearly 2% in pre-market following the announcement.

Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair (IR:RYA) flew a record 17.4 million passengers in June, its highest for a single month and a 9% increase from a year earlier.

These strong figures came even after the airline, Europe's largest by passengers carried, canceled more than 900 flights, affecting some 160,000 customers, mainly due to air traffic control strikes last month.
