Ford to buy lithium from ioneer for American EV battery plant
(Reuters) - Ford Motor (NYSE:F) Co said on Thursday it will buy lithium from ioneer Ltd's Rhyolite Ridge mining project in Nevada and use the metal to build electric vehicle batteries in the United States.
The deal is one of the first binding agreements between a U.S. lithium company and U.S. automaker amid rising pressure from Washington to domestically source metals for the green energy transition and curb reliance on China.
Under the terms of the deal, ioneer will supply 7,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate annually for five years to BlueOvalSK, Ford's battery joint venture with SK Innovation, which has a Kentucky factory.
Shipments are slated to start by the end of 2025, when ioneer and its development partner Sibanye Stillwater (NYSE:SBSW) Ltd expect the mine, on federal land roughly 225 miles (362 km) north of Las Vegas, to open.
"We're really excited to be helping America's goal of making EVs domestically," James Calaway, ioneer's executive chairman, told Reuters. The Australia-based company began trading on the Nasdaq last month.
The amount of lithium ioneer will supply Ford is enough to make about 175,000 EVs annually, though that figure would vary depending on a vehicle's power needs.
"Helping unlock lithium in the U.S. will help us support localized production of battery cells going forward," said Lisa Drake, Ford's vice president of EV industrialization.
The Ford deal, and a similar one last year with South Korea's Ecopro Co, are for about two-thirds of ioneer's expected annual lithium production of 21,000 tonnes. Calaway said ioneer is in talks now to sell most of the remaining capacity in the United States.
U.S. officials earlier this year said they would zone off 910 acres (368 hectares) near the mine site in a step seen as ameliorating concerns from some conservationists that the project could harm a rare flower.

Shares of Ford (NYSE:F) are up more than 5% in premarket trading Thursday after the automaker reported better-than-expected adjusted EPS for Q2.
The company posted Q2 adjusted EPS of 68c, compared to 13c in the year-ago period and smashing the analyst consensus of 45c per share. Total revenue came in at $40.19 billion in the period to easily top the consensus estimate of $37.05 billion.
For a full year, Ford expects adjusted EBIT in the range of $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion, beating the consensus projection of $11.15 billion. F also expects FY adjusted free cash flow of $5.5 billion to $6.5 billion.
Ford said Q2 vehicle shipments in China were down due to coronavirus lockdown restrictions in the country.
A Morgan Stanley analyst sees a “big beat” from Ford, but remains Equal Weight-rated despite seeing an attractive valuation.
“At the share price, we not only believe the EV 'option' value has been appropriately compressed to near zero NPV (as it should be), but the market may also be undervaluing the run-off cash flows of the ICE portfolio, which is going too far, in our view. ICE will decline, but the decline will go far beyond end of decade and we believe can produce substantial cash flows in the process,” he told clients in a note.
An analyst from JPMorgan maintained his Overweight rating and a $19 per share price target on F stock after a “big beat”.
“We have increased confidence in Ford’s ability to meet its above-consensus full year guidance after the firm reported much stronger than expected 2Q profits, benefitting from a combination of favorable industry mix and pricing as well as company-specific execution,” the analyst said in a client note.
“While macro risks have increased significantly since the company reported 1Q earnings, we believe pent-up retail demand from ~3 years of softer vehicle production and depressed dealer inventories, a needed restock of dealer inventories, and an aged rental car fleet should provide meaningful offsets in case of any protracted downturn,” he added.

Ford to cut prices of Mustang Mach-E, following Tesla's lead
(Reuters) -Ford Motor Co on Monday cut prices of its electric crossover SUV Mustang Mach-E by as much as $5,900 per vehicle, weeks after rival Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Inc slashed prices globally on its electric vehicles by as much as 20%.
Shares of Ford closed down 2.9% in above average trading to $12.89. Tesla fell 6.3%.
The move comes as electric vehicle manufacturers are feeling pressure from Tesla's price cut to respond.
"Ford just cut Mustang EV prices in response to Tesla’s price cut. Mini price war about to begin with EVs in the US with Tesla’s shot across the bow on price cuts," said Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, on Twitter.
The move will make at least one additional version of the Mach-E again eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit, which requires the Ford EV to have a suggested retail price of no more than $55,000 to be eligible.
Ford had already planned to increase Mach-E production this year at its plant in Mexico to 130,000 vehicles from 78,000 in 2022, and said in November it was accelerating Mustang Mach-E production and targeting global annual production rate of 270,000 by the end of 2023 including its China production.
Ford builds the Mach-E in Mexico and China.
"Tesla’s price cut was a major blow to the prospects of competing EV models and the Mustang Mach-E directly competes with Tesla’s Model Y," said Garrett Nelson, an analyst at CFRA Research.
Ford is cutting prices by up to 8% on various versions of the Mach-E, as well as cutting the price of the extended range battery by about 19%. The lowest-price models are getting smaller $600 to $900 price cuts. The Ford price cuts only impact North American prices.

Profitability in the quarter was enhanced by a favorable mix of products, higher net pricing and increased volume and was broadly based geographically. The Ford Blue and Ford Pro business segments were both profitable in every region.
