Leeds leads on mortgages
LEEDS Building Society flew the flag for mutuality today, breaking records for mortgage lending and member numbers.

With big banks under pressure for reporting the highest profits since 2007 while keeping savings rates low, building societies have shown their worth.

Leeds lent £5 billion in home loans in 2022, the highest ever, which it says “helped put home ownership within reach of more people”.

The Leeds has been around since 1875 and now has more members than ever – 839,000 people who effectively own the business. It is the fifth biggest building society – Nationwide is the number one.

Leeds says it has suspended all mortgage arrears fees until “at least” the start of 2024 to help struggling customers figure out their finances.

Chief executive Richard Fearon said: "Our continued support for the housing market enabled us to surpass all previous lending records. We continued to offer strong support for customers less well served by the wider market despite the extremely volatile conditions we were operating in. Approximately one in three of all our mortgages went to first time buyers - helped by our decision to withdraw from lending on second homes to bolster our support for those yet to get on the property ladder.”

Fearon claims the society paid savers an interest rate that was 0.5% higher than the rest of the market.

Pound falls below $1.20
The value of the pound has dipped below $1.20, approaching a new low for the year.

One pound currently buys $1.1972.

The dollar rose against all major currencies today, ahead of the Bureau of Economic Analysis reporting Personal Consumption Expenditure figures - a key component in the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions - at 1:30 pm GMT.

The pound hit $1.19 on both 3 and 5 January, which remains its lowest level for the year.

Obecna na konferencji prasowej szefowa Komisji Europejskiej Ursula von der Leyen mówiła: "Dziś możemy być dumni z tego, że wywiązaliśmy się ze zobowiązań podjętych podczas negocjacji w sprawie brexitu". Potwierdziła, że tzw. Windsor Framework to "nowy rozdział" w stosunkach Wielkiej Brytanii i Unii Europejskiej. - Uzgodniliśmy solidne zabezpieczenia, które będą chronić integralność jednolitego rynku UE - podkreśliła.

Nowe porozumienie ma między innymi zmniejszyć obciążenia biurokratyczne, jakie pojawiły się w regionie po brexicie. Protokół Irlandii Północnej został wynegocjowany przez rząd Borisa Johnsona i ustalał zasady specjalnego statusu, jakim zapalny rejon świata miał się cieszyć po rozstaniu Królestwa z Unią. Nowe porozumienie modyfikuje te warunki, ale nie usuwa odmiennego statusu prawnego Irlandii Północnej w stosunku do Wielkiej Brytanii (Anglii, Walii i Szkocji). Statusu, przeciw któremu protestuje część polityków: w regionie i w Partii Konserwatywnej.

Premier Sunak musi się liczyć z oporem politycznym, którego skalę dopiero poznamy. Treść umowy niepokoi członków DUP - unionistycznej partii w Irlandii Północnej, a także prawego skrzydła Partii Konserwatywnej. Niezadowoleni oni byli także z dotychczasowego kształtu porozumienia. Unioniści w proteście paraliżują obecnie działania regionalnego rządu w Belfaście. Zasady Porozumienia Wielkopiątkowego z 1998 roku mówią, że regionem muszą razem rządzić przedstawiciele unioniści i republikanie. DUP bojkotuje egzekutywę.

UK grocery price inflation also rose to a new record high, rising 17.1% in February according to Kantar, raising the prospect that the Bank of England may have to keep hiking rates in the coming months, if only to keep a floor under the pound."

In economic news, grocery price inflation in the UK hit a new high in the four weeks to 19 February, according to data provider Kantar.

Inflation reached 17.1% - the highest level ever recorded by Kantar, pushing the average annual bill up by £811.

Take-home grocery sales rose 8.8% over the four-week period and 8.1% over the 12-week period.

"Shoppers have been facing sustained price rises for some time now and this February marks a full year since monthly grocery inflation climbed above 4%," said Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar.

"This is having a big impact on people's lives.

"Our latest research shows that grocery price inflation is the second most important financial issue for the public behind energy costs, with two-thirds of people concerned by food and drink prices, above public sector strikes and climate change."

McKevitt said one quarter said they were struggling financially, versus one-in-five this time last year.

On the continent, French and Spanish inflation rose in February according to preliminary figures, putting more pressure on the European Central Bank to hike rates.

On home shores, the latest survey from mortgage lender Nationwide showed that house prices fell by 1.1% year-on-year in February, the first annual decline since June 2020.

Prices declined 0.5% month-on-month, marking the sixth consecutive monthly drop, according to the building society's key index. Across the UK, the average house price in February was £257,406.

Prices are now 3.7% lower than their peak last August, and February's negative annual price growth was the weakest seen since November 2012, Nationwide added.

Elsewhere, the latest BRC-NielsenIQ Shop Price Index showed that shop price inflation hit a fresh high in February as the cost of food continued to soar. Annual inflation was a record 8.4% compared to 8% in January.

Within that, non-food inflation was 5.3%, up from 5.1% in January, while food surged to 14.5%, the highest inflation rate in the food category on record. In January, it was 13.8%.

Revolut ‘really near the very final stages’ of getting a UK banking license as sales jump 33% in 2022
Fintech giant Revolut today said it was “really near the very final stages” of securing a banking license in the UK as it reported a near-tripling of sales in 2021 and a further boost to turnover in 2022.

The London-based firm, which offers debit cards and crypto services, posted revenues of £636 million for the year to end-December 2021, while pre-tax profits topped £25 million, turning around a loss of £223 million the year before.

The recent turmoil in the crypto market, which has seen the value of Bitcoin plunge amid a string of bankruptcies, caused Revolut’s own turnover in digital asset activity to shrink in 2022, with crypto services accounting for only 5-10% of the total income last year. But despite the decline, the company said it still sales growth of 33% in 2022 to £850 million. Revolut could not confirm profits for 2022, but chief financial officer Mikko Salovaara told the Standard profitability would show “nothing meaningful in terms of a change versus 2021.”

He said: “We’re going to continue to roll out in new geographies at a quick pace…the business to me feels quite resilient, diversified and sustainable.

“I think we’re really near the very final stages and we’ll be delighted if and when we receive a [UK banking] license – it’s the right thing for customers with things like deposit insurance, and it’s the right thing for Revolut.”

On the downside, housebuilders slid after a profit warning from Persimmon, which said it was hit by a spike in mortgage rates.

The company said completions would likely be down "markedly" in the current year, which would hit both margin and profits.

Persimmon tumbled 12.05%, while Taylor Wimpey lost 4.1%, Barratt Developments was off 4.18%, Berkeley Group slipped 2.05%, Redrow was down 3.36%, and Bellway was behind by 3.61%.

London Metal Exchange LME faces probe into $4 billion chaos in nickel market
The price spike of 250% last March led to cancelled trades and the first suspension of dealing in decades

The way in which the London Metal Exchange handled a dizzying spike in the price of nickel last year is at the centre of an investigation opened by regulators today.

Controversy surrounded the LME’s decision to cancel trades worth around $4 billion (£3.3 billion) in the industrial metal after the price surged 250% in just 24 hours in March last year. Commodities markets were in chaos as investors reacted to the implications of sanctions against Russia and rising demand after the end of Covid restrictions.

The wild swing was thought to be part of a series of short trades introduced during Asian trading hours, when the number of trades can be lower and have more of an impact on prices.

The LME suspended trading for the first time in decades and then cancelled the trades. Industry figures said the move to ditch the contracts was, in effect, a bailout for major nickel producer Tsingshan Holding Group, although it also came to the rescue of a number of brokers. A series of hedge funds and other financial institutions stood to make millions in profit on the trades.

The Financial Conduct Authority said today that it had “opened an enforcement investigation into some of the LME’s conduct and systems and controls”.

Według Prystajki Wielka Brytania obiecała Ukrainie 14 czołgów Challenger 2, ale podczas lutowej wizyty prezydenta Wołodymyra Zełenskiego w Wielkiej Brytanii uzgodniono, że liczba ta zostanie podwojona.

Ambasador powiedział, że Wielka Brytania poprzez swoje decyzje stopniowo kształtuje konsensus w sprawie niektórych rodzajów broni.

Prystajko przekazał, że w temacie przekazania czołgów dla Ukrainy Brytyjczycy „próbowali przekonać wszystkich pozostałych sojuszników, że są dwie opcje: albo Wielka Brytania pójdzie sama z tym oświadczeniem i zrobi tę wyrwę, w którą wszyscy inni będą musieli wejść, albo wszyscy razem jako jeden front, jak NATO, zrobią ten bardzo ważny krok”.

Według premiera Wielkiej Brytanii Rishi Sunaka, brytyjskie czołgi Challenger 2 przybędą na Ukrainę w marcu 2023 roku.

Unia Europejska ma w 2024 roku uruchomić program pobierania podatku turystycznego dla obywateli krajów, które nie należą do wspólnoty. Opłatę w wysokości 7 euro będą musieli uiścić m.in. Brytyjczycy i Amerykanie.
Program podatku turystycznego Unii Europejskiej miał zostać uruchomiony w listopadzie tego roku. Jak podaje CNN, został on jednak przesunięty na 2024 rok. Opłatę będą musieli uiścić wszyscy podróżni wjeżdżający do jednego z państw strefy, którzy nie są obywatelami UE.

Kwotę opiewającą na 7 euro - 7€ będą musieli zapłacić każdorazowo obywatele 63 krajów, w tym Brytyjczycy, Amerykanie czy Australijczycy. Z podatku turystycznego od wjazdu do jednego z państw Wspólnoty zwolnione będą jedynie osoby poniżej 18. roku życia oraz seniorzy powyżej 70. roku życia.

Program będzie działał na wzór amerykańskiego Elektronicznego Systemu Autoryzacji Podróży (ang. Electronic System for Travel Authorization, ESTA), który umożliwia obywatelom z 40 krajów 90-dniowy pobyt w Stanach Zjednoczonych bez wizy. Koszt 4+17$ ? 2023

W 2022 r. podatek turystyczny w wysokości 300 bahtów (około 35 zł) wprowadziła Tajlandia. Gubernator Urzędu Turystyki przekazał, że część tej opłaty zostanie przeznaczona na opiekę nad turystami. Podatki mają też pomóc władzom w finansowaniu i utrzymaniu działania atrakcji turystycznych, takich jak Wielki Pałac Królewski w Bangkoku.

W Europie podatek turystyczny już obowiązuje m.in. w Paryżu, a także Wiedniu czy Salzburgu. W najbliższym czasie planują go wprowadzić także Walencja i Wenecja. Władze pobierają opłatę od osób, które wykupią w mieście zakwaterowanie – w hotelu, hostelu czy apartamencie.

Costa Coffee boosts wages for UK staff
Costa Coffee has announced plans to increase wages for staff across its 1,520 company-owned UK stores.

From 1 April, base pay rates for baristas will increase from £10 per hour to at least £10.70 per hour, regardless of age, while more experienced ‘barista maestros’ will get at least £11.23 per hour, up from £10.53, depending on location and role.

Nick Orrin, Costa’s interim UK and Ireland managing director, said: “We continue to live in uncertain times, but we are passionate about putting our teams and communities first.”

Costa Coffee has announced plans to increase wages for staff across its 1,520 company-owned UK stores.
Costa said staff will also be offered the chance to boost the basic rate to £10.90 by undertaking training, meaning three-quarters of its team members will be on at least £10.90 per hour from April.

This is the third time Costa Coffee has increased its pay rates in the last 12 months. In this time, the company’s base rate of pay has risen from £9.36 to £10.70 per hour – an increase of more than 14%.

On home shores, investors were digesting a survey showing that business activity in the construction sector jumped last month.

The S&P Global ***** UK Construction PMI came in at 54.6 in February, up significantly on January's 48.4 and well above analyst forecasts for 48.6.

The highest since May 2022, it was the first time the index had risen above the neutral 50 point in three months. A reading below 50 indicates contraction, while one above that suggests growth.

Driving the growth was a rebound in commercial work - with a reading of 55.3 - as well as a positive contribution from civil engineering, at 52.3.

Respondents said the improving near-term economic outlook had helped boost orders for commercial projects, while input cost inflation had fallen to its lowest level since November 2020.

However, the housing sector continued to struggle, with activity remaining under 50 for the third month running, at 47.4. Respondents said higher interest rates were weighing on the market, and reported new house building projects being cut back in anticipation of weaker demand.

Tim Moore, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said: "Construction companies appear increasingly confident about the year ahead business outlook, with optimism rebounding strongly from the lows seen in the final quarter of 2022."

Billionaire Issa brothers’ EG Group sells $1.5 billion in property
The billionaire Issa brothers’ business EG Group has sold $1.5 billion worth of property in the US as the pair scramble to bring down the firm’s debt burden amid soaring interest rates.

EG Group, which runs hundreds of petrol stations in the UK as well as the Leon fast food brand, said it had sold 415 store assets in the US to property company Realty Income, in a deal which will see it lease the assets back for a $103 million annual rental fee.

EG Group said the move, which represents a sale of around 15% of its property empire, was part of its “commitment to reduce total net leverage through debt reduction and free cash flow generation.”

CBI boss Tony Danker steps aside amid workplace misconduct probe
Confederation of British Industry (CBI) director-general Tony Danker has stepped aside as the trade body investigates claims of workplace misconduct.

The CBI - which speaks for more than 190,000 UK businesses - said it was made aware of an allegation regarding Danker’s conduct in January.

This, it said, “was investigated thoroughly and was dealt with comprehensively”, with the CBI ultimately determining that disciplinary action was not required.
