Exxon Mobil Plans Job Cuts After Performance Evaluations

Exxon Mobil (XOM) - Get Report is reportedly getting ready to cut jobs in the U.S. as the oil giant focuses on a leaner and more efficient organizational structure.

Shares of the Irving, Texas, company at last check were down 3.5% to $43.60.

Between 5% and 10% of U.S.-based employees who are subject to performance evaluations could end up leaving this year after their assessments, Bloomberg reported.

The cuts are expected to be performance-based and not characterized as layoffs. Not all workers are subject to such evaluations, which typically apply to white-collar jobs such as engineering, finance and project management.

Exxon Mobil told Bloomberg there’s no specific target to reduce its head count. “We have a rigorous talent management process which routinely assesses employee performance,” the company said.

Last month, Exxon Mobil posted a surprise first-quarter loss amid a historic decline in global crude prices and said it would slash spending by $10 billion in order to protect its dividend and balance sheet.

The company said it would slash its 2020 capital spending plans by around 30%, to $23 billion.

Chief Executive Officer Darren Woods said the coronavirus "significantly impacted near-term demand, resulting in oversupplied markets and unprecedented pressure on commodity prices and margins."

Woods told Exxon Mobil’s annual meeting that while no were layoffs planned, the company was reducing its number of contractors and is trying to become leaner.

Exxon Mobil employed 74,900 people worldwide at the end of 2019.

Chevron (CVX) - Get Report and BP (BP) - Get Report are cutting about 16,000 workers between them. Both companies's shares were lower Friday afternoon.

Exxon Reveals Massive Earnings Damage As Rivals Book Huge Write-Downs

Exxon Mobil (XOM) warned on its second-quarter profit Thursday amid lower oil prices due to the coronavirus pandemic. But oil stocks rose after strong U.S. jobs data.

The oil major sees lower oil prices impacting its upstream earnings by $2.1 billion-$2.5 billion in Q2, according to a regulatory filing.

Meanwhile, Exxon's downstream business that refines petroleum products should see earnings impacted by $700 million-$900 million in Q2.

The company will report Q2 results on July 31. The Exxon earnings warning follows write-downs by other global oil companies, affecting their stocks.

On Tuesday, Royal Dutch Shell (RDSA) warned investors that it would take an after-tax impairment charge of $15 billion-$22 billion in Q2. BP (BP) said earlier that it would write off $13 billion-$17.5 million in after-tax charges in Q2.

Why Exxon Earnings Look Better Than They Really Are

Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) reported second-quarter 2020 results before markets opened Friday. The integrated oil and gas giant posted an adjusted diluted earnings per share loss of $0.70 on revenues of $32.6 billion. In the same period a year ago, the company reported earnings per share (EPS) of $0.61 on revenues of $69.1 billion. Second-quarter results also compare to the consensus estimates for a net loss of $0.61 and revenues of $38.2 billion.

The quarter’s results included a $0.44 “positive noncash inventory valuation adjustment from rising commodity prices.” Excluding that adjustment, Exxon’s second-quarter loss totaled $0.26.

Second-quarter cash provided by operations fell from $5.9 billion a year ago to zero, and capital spending totaled $5.3 billion, down by 34% year over year. Excluding working capital, asset sales and cash flow from operations totaled $1.5 billion in the second quarter, down from $7.2 billion in the same period of last year.

Net income in the quarter dropped from $3.1 billion a year ago to a net loss of $1.1 billion.

Oil-equivalent production fell by 3% to 3.6 million barrels a day, reflecting a decrease of 3% in liquids production and a 12% decrease in natural gas production.

CEO and Chair Darren Woods said that the company is confident that it can meet its cost-reduction target for the year and based on current projections, “we do not plan to take on any additional debt.” Total debt at the end of the quarter was $69.5 billion, up by $9.9 billion sequentially and by $24.3 billion year over year.

Capital and exploratory spending in the quarter totaled $5.3 billion. For the first half of the year, capex totaled $12.5 billion. Exxon has forecast full-year capex at approximately $23 billion.

The net loss in the company’s upstream (exploration and production) totaled $1.65 billion, compared to a profit of $3.26 billion in the year-ago quarter. The decline was due largely to a decline of $4.5 billion in price realizations.

Downstream results (refining and marketing) increased by $525 million year over year to $976 million. The increase is entirely due to a noncash inventory valuation that added $1.2 billion to the segment’s non-U.S. downstream results.

Exxon did not provide financial guidance but in a presentation to accompany its conference call the company said that upstream production would decline by a total of about 200,000 barrels a day in the third quarter. Refinery runs are expected to improve while refining margins remain weak.

Analysts are expecting a third-quarter loss per share of $0.01 on revenues of $46.9 billion, compared with EPS of $0.67 and revenues of $65.1 billion in the third quarter of 2019. For the full year, analysts are looking for a loss per share of $0.12 on revenues of $192.2 billion.

Exxon paid $3.7 billion in dividends ($0.87 per share) in the second quarter. With operating cash flow of just $43 million, virtually all the dividend payment was borrowed.

The good news for investors is that Exxon has been able to borrow enough cash to pay its dividend. The not-so-good news is that the company had to raise the valuation on its inventories in order to dress up a dismal quarter. On a GAAP basis, rival Chevron posted a net loss per share of $4.44 in the quarter, including a $1.8 billion charge to account for lower crude prices. Exxon’s oil is not worth more than Chevron’s.

Exxon’s shares traded down 2% early Friday, at $41.08. The stock’s 52-week range is $30.11 to $75.18. Analysts had a 12-month price target of $47.38 before this morning’s report. The company’s dividend yield is 8.31% at an annualized rate of $3.48 per share.

Exxon Mobil wyrzucony z prestiżowego indeksu. Zmiany, zmiany
31 sierpnia z grona trzydziestu spółek indeksu Dow Jones IA zostaną usunięte Exxon Mobil, Pfizer i Raytheon.

Należał on do DJIA od 1928 r. (wcześniej pod nazwą Standard Oil of New Jersey), najdłużej ze wszystkich obecnych w nim spółek.

Jeszcze w 2013 r.

Teoretycznie atrakcyjnie wygląda stopa dywidendy Exxona: 8,5 procent.

Exxon stracił w drugim kwartale 1,1 mld dolarów, a w sumie w pierwszym półroczu blisko 1,7 mld dolarów.

Exxon Mobil Gets Set To Shrink As Oil Prices Struggle To Rebound

Exxon Mobil (XOM) confirmed it's looking at job cuts worldwide as oil prices stall while protecting its dividend remains urgent. Exxon stock dipped.

The oil major, which was just ousted from the Dow Jones Industrial Average, announced voluntary layoffs at its Australian operations and added that further job cuts are under consideration at its operations in other countries.

"We have evaluations underway on a country-by-country basis to assess possible additional efficiencies to right-size our business and make it stronger for the future," Exxon told Reuters.

The oil major has been preparing steep spending and job cuts to preserve its dividend, sources told Reuters in July, as the oil rebound and planned asset sales have failed to materialize as hoped.

During the second quarter earnings conference call later that month, management said it saw the potential for workforce reduction and planned to conclude a review this summer and announce the results in the fall.

To conserve cash, Exxon has also cut investment spending by $10 billion this year and expects its rig counts in the Permian basin to continue to fall.

Exxon Stock, Oil Prices
Shares dipped 0.4% to 39.27 on the stock market today. Exxon stock has been drifting lower since spiking in June and hitting resistance at its 50-day average, according to MarketSmith chart analysis. Chevron (CVX) rose 0.3%.

The job cuts come as Exxon has made protecting its dividend a top priority. The company is maintaining its quarterly dividend at 87 cents a share.

Earlier this year CEO Darron Woods said that 70% of the oil major's investor base is made up of retail and long-term investors that expect a strong dividend.

Oil prices crashed as Covid-19 lockdowns hit demand in April. But travel still hasn't rebounded even after some lockdowns eased. For weeks, crude has been stuck in the low to mid-$40s per barrel.

On Wednesday, U.S. oil prices rose 0.5% to $42.90 per barrel. Brent was up 0.4% to $45.75 per barrel.

The Energy Information Administration will report weekly domestic stockpile and production data at 10:30 a.m. ET. Analysts polled by S&P Global Platts see a 1.2 million barrel drop in crude stockpiles and a 4.7 million barrel decline in gasoline supplies for the week ended Aug. 28.

The American Petroleum Institute, an industry group, saw a 6.4 million barrel drop in crude supplies.

Exxon Mobil's Q3 Loss Could Be Much Worse Than Expected

Exxon Mobil's (XOM) third-quarter loss may be much worse than feared as the coronavirus pandemic continues to weigh on oil prices as global cases continue to rise. Exxon stock fell.

Zacks Investment Research analysts see Exxon reporting an 8 cents per share drop in earnings. But Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Co. analysts told Reuters that items in a Thursday filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission actually point to a loss closer to 30 cents per share.

Oil prices have risen from lows seen in Q2 and Exxon expects its exploration and production earnings to improve by $1.4 billion to $1.8 billion vs. Q2, according to the SEC filing.

But Exxon also expects weak natural gas prices to hit earnings by $500 million.

Crude remains rangebound around $40 per barrel making some fields, especially in shale plays, uneconomical. Analysts don't see prices improving anytime soon.

"There doesn't appear to be any urgency to move in either direction, with $40 seemingly the sweet spot for now," Craig Erlam, Oanda senior market analyst, wrote in a note Thursday.

Exxon will report full third-quarter results on Oct. 30.

IBD Live: A New Tool For Daily Stock Market Analysis

Oil Prices Hit Exxon Stock
Shares fell nearly 3% to 33.35 on the stock market today as oil prices tumbled. Exxon stock is now at the lowest level since March, when the coronavirus first sent markets into free fall, according to MarketSmith chart analysis. Rival Chevron (CVX) dropped 2.3% early Thursday.

Brent fell nearly 4% to $40.64 per barrel. U.S. crude was down 4.7% to $38.34.

The oil major is coming out of a rough Q3. Exxon got kicked out of the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Aug. 31 after over 90 years on the key index.

But the energy giant has been doing everything in its power to protect its dividend. The company had a workforce review this summer and plans to announce the results this fall. On Thursday, Royal Dutch Shell (RDSA) announced massive job cuts.
