Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) has reported discoveries totaling billions of barrels of oil offshore of Guyana. Or offshore of Venezuela, depending on whom you ask.

Last Saturday, the Venezuelan navy intercepted and forced an oil research vessel to turn around claiming that the ship was in Venezuelan waters. The vessel, the Ramform Tethys belongs to a Norwegian firm and was conducting a seismic survey for Exxon at the time the ship was forced to turn around.

Exxon Earnings Had Only a Little to Do With Oil Production

Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) reported estimated fourth-quarter and full-year 2018 results before markets opened Friday. For the quarter, the integrated oil and gas giant posted diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.41 on revenues of $71.9 billion. In the same period a year ago, the company said it had EPS of $1.97 on revenues of $66.52 billion. Fourth-quarter results also compare to the consensus estimates for EPS of $1.08 on revenues of $78.38 billion.

For the full year, Exxon reported EPS of $4.88 and revenues of $290.21 billion, compared with 2017 EPS of $4.63 and revenues of $244.36 billion. Analysts had projected EPS of $4.57 and revenues of $316.05 billion.

Net income in the latest quarter dropped 28% from $8.38 billion a year ago to $6 billion. Oil-equivalent production rose 0.4% year over year in the fourth quarter from 3.99 million barrels a day last year to 4.01 million barrels a day, primarily due to a liquids increase of 97,000 barrels a day. Full-year production dipped from 3.99 million barrels a day to 3.83 million barrels

Worldwide upstream earnings totaled $3.31 billion, compared with $8.35 billion in the year-ago quarter. U.S. earnings dropped from $7.06 billion to $265 million. Non-U.S. earnings rose from $1.29 billion in 2017 to $3.05 billion in 2018. Excluding earnings related to tax reform, U.S. earnings in 2018 totaled $549 million compared to a net loss of $60 million in 2017.

In the U.S. downstream division, earnings rose 7.5% to $987 million, up by $69 million year over year. On an adjusted basis, U.S. downstream earnings rose from $306 million to $999 million, due primarily to higher margins and lower downtime. Non-U.S. earnings rose from $646 billion to $1.73 billion, primarily as a result of the sale of a European refinery.

Capital spending totaled $7.84 billion in the quarter, down 13% year over year. For the full year, Exxon’s capex totaled $25.92 billion, an increase of 12% year over year.

ExxonMobil Stock Is Cheap, Near 30-Year Low; May Be Right Time To Buy

A company that had always been one of the frontrunners in many ways, is now relatively cheap to buy stock in. ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) is hovering at one of its lowest prices since the late 1980s. That means the stock is nearing a 30-year low.

When you hear that company that’s proven to be reliable is at one of their lowest points in decades, it might make you assume that that company isn’t doing so well right now. However, you’ll soon find out that the opposite may actually be true.

Why so cheap?
So, the million dollar question – why is ExxonMobil’s stock so cheap? We’re talking the price to tangible book value being around 30 percent lower than its 10-year average.

A few factors are contributing to the stock price drop. For starters, the company’s return on capital employed (ROCE) is quite low. ROCE is a measurement of how well a company handles shareholder money. That sounds pretty scary, doesn’t it?

For quite a while, ExxonMobil usually was one of the pack leaders for the oil industry when it came to ROCE. Until 2014 came around, and we entered a bear market for oil, when ExxonMobil gave up its lead and fell back into the middle of the pack. It's stayed there ever since.

However, that's now slowly starting to change. The company laid out a rather aggressive growth plan to double their earnings and cash flow by 2025. That’s a pretty hefty goal. They did, though, land in an oil haven back in 2015 when they made their way into the coast of Guyana.

How do they expect to reach this goal? By putting in up to $30 billion a year to grow its upstream (drilling) and downstream (chemicals and refining) businesses. They also plan to put more attention on improving their ROCE score on top of increasing production.

That brings us to the second factor that’s dropped ExxonMobil’s stock – falling production levels. Well, if their quarterly earnings surpassing their expectations speaks to anything, they’re well on their way to improving their production levels.

The company earned $6.41 billion in their latest quarter (excluding any tax impacts which brings the earnings to $6 billion), which is a 72 percent increase from the same time last year. With more drilling initiatives to keep vamping up over the years, they expect their production levels to continue to grow (including their earnings).

To buy, or leave behind?
So, if the million dollar question was why ExxonMobil’s stock is at a low point, the billion dollar question is do you buy, or walk past the stock to something different? It’s hard to tell what will happen between 2019 and 2025, but things are looking pretty good for the oil giant.

ExxonMobil showed that it’s listened to investors’ concerns and are doing something about it. They’re taking the initiative to ramp up production and become, once again, a ROCE leader.

If you’re going to invest in the company, now’s the time to do it. If things go according to their plan, their stock won’t stay this cheap for much longer.

Crude Oil Prices Fall On Oversupply Fears As Exxon Boosts Spending

Crude oil prices retreated ahead of key weekly oil data as Exxon Mobil (XOM) announced plans to boost spending, fueling oversupply fears.

During its investors meeting Wednesday, Exxon Mobil said it would increase its capital spending budget by 24% to $32 billion a year. Cash flow from oil and gas production is seen rising over 6%. Exxon Mobil now sees 2025 profit up 140% vs. 2017 adjusted earnings, up from a prior goal of 135%.

On Tuesday, Exxon announced plans to produce 1 million barrels per day in the Permian Basin as early as 2024, an 80% jump from prior estimates.

Exxon said its plans were "attractive at a range of prices" and its assets could have a return of more than 10% if crude oil's price fell to $35 per barrel.

Chevron (CVX) also raised its Permian production targets Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the OECD lowered global economic growth forecasts again, which would weigh on crude oil demand.

Crude Oil Prices, Energy Stocks Fall
U.S. crude oil prices fell about 1% to $55.99 per barrel. Brent crude oil prices were down 0.2% to $65.69.

Exxon shares fell 1.1% to 79.41 in premarket trading on the stock market today. Chevron was off 0.5% to 122.70. Top U.S. independents Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) and Concho Resources (CXO) weren't active early.

U.S. Oil Data Due
The Energy Information Administration will report weekly stockpile and production data at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Analysts polled by S&P Global Platts expect a 1.9 million barrel increase in oil stockpiles with gasoline supplies are seen falling by 2 million barrels.

The American Petroleum Institute said U.S. oil stockpiles rose by 7.3 million barrels while gasoline stockpiles fell by 391,000 barrels last week.

Exxon Mobil Earnings, Revenue Miss Badly; Chevron Revenue Also Weak

Dow Jones oil giant Exxon Mobil (XOM) reported earnings and revenue that fell far short of expectations, and Chevron (CVX) also had weak revenue in Q1.

Exxon Earnings
Estimates: Exxon earnings are seen falling 31% to 75 cents per share with revenue dipping 0.4% to $67.93 billion.

Results: EPS of 55 cents on revenue of $63.6 billion. Oil-equivalent production rose 2.4% to 3.98 million barrels per day, and Permian shale production soared 140%. Upstream income fell 18% to $2.88 billion due in part to lower liquids prices and higher growth-related expenses. Downstream operations swung to a loss of $256 million income of $940 million due to smaller margins and maintenance. Chemical income was nearly halved to $518 million on lower margins.

Capital and exploration expenditures jumped 42% to $6.9 billion, reflecting key investments in the U.S. Permian Basin. Cash flow from operations and asset sales was $8.4 billion.

Exxon Mobil (XOM - Get Report) stock fell Friday, closing lower by 2.1% after the oil conglomerate reported fiscal first-quarter earnings.

Given that Exxon missed on top- and bottom-line expectations, it's somewhat surprising that the stock is only down as marginally as it is. Add to it the fact that Exxon had rallied quite a bit over the past few months and longs should be pleasantly surprised it's not down more.

Earnings of 55 cents per share missed expectations by 15 cents per share and declined 50% year over year, while revenue of $63.7 billion came up well short of estimates for $67.35 billion and declined 6.7%.

Exxon's results also come alongside Chevron's (CVX - Get Report) quarterly results, which is vying for a takeout of Anadarko Petroleum (APC - Get Report) amid a bidding war with Occidental Petroleum (OXY - Get Report) .
