Hasbro Stock Drops As CEO Takes Medical Leave Ahead of Holiday Quarter
Hasbro stock traded lower after the toy maker said CEO Brian Goldner will take a leave of absence while the company battles supply-chain issues ahead of the holiday season.

Hasbro (HAS) - Get Hasbro, Inc. (HAS) Report shares traded lower Monday after the toymaker said CEO Brian Goldner, who was treated for prostate cancer in 2014, will take a medical leave of absence.

Hasbro referred to Goldner’s disclosure in August 2020 that he was undergoing continued medical care following treatment for cancer in 2014.

Goldner's temporary departure comes as Hasbro battles industry-wide supply-chain issues to ensure its toys hit store shelves in time for the pivotal holiday season. Rich Stoddart, a lead independent director on Hasbro’s board, will serve as interim CEO effective immediately, the company said in a statement Sunday.

"I am humbled to step in as Interim CEO and lead the company as it continues to execute the Brand Blueprint strategy, while Brian takes time to focus on his health. Hasbro has the most creative teams across the consumer products, digital gaming and entertainment businesses, and there’s no limit to what we can accomplish together," said Stoddart in a statement.

Hasbro shares were marked 0.8% lower in early trading Monday to change hands at $89.30 each, a move that would nudge the stock's year-to-date decline to around 4.5%.

In July, Hasbro posted stronger-than-expected second quarter earnings with its recent focus on digital gaming and entertainment continued to add to the toymaker's top and bottom lines.

Entertainment revenues, which include its popular Peppa Pig franchise, were up 47% to $226.7 million, Hasbro said, while its traditional consumer products revenues were up 33% at $689.2 million. Wizards of the Coast & Digital gaming sales rose fourfold to $406.3 million, Hasbro said.

Hasbro CEO Goldner has said the toymaker is 'on track to our target of double-digit revenue growth for the full-year' following a Wall Street-beating second quarter.

Goldner joined Hasbro in 2000 and became CEO in May 2008. He led the $4 billion acquisition of Entertainment One in 2019, making a big bet on entertainment aimed at young children, and signed deals to cement Hasbro’s hold on Star Wars, Marvel and Disney characters, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Activist investor urges Hasbro to spin off Wizards of the Coast, Dan Loeb sees Amazon ‘inflection point’

Yahoo Finance's Julie Hyman and Brian Sozzi discuss activist investor Alta Fox urging Hasbro to spin off its Wizards of the Coast business and activist investor Dan Loeb buying more Amazon stock.

BRIAN SOZZI: And Julie, also watching our shares of Hasbro here. Stock is up close to 7%, and really a situation we have not seen happen at Hasbro, just based on my time covering the company, which is a while. An activist situation here, Alta Fox, which they're nominating five members to Hasbro's board of directors.

Also just got an email from the folks over there. They're ultimately pushing for Hasbro to spin off its Wizards of the Coast digital gaming business. This has been a very key growth driver for Hasbro in recent quarters here and comes as we've seen a lot of transactions in the gaming space right now-- of course, Take Two buying Zynga.

So I think Alta Fox looking for them to extract value. Now that team over there says if that spinoff was to happen, it could unlock about $13 billion in total value, Julie. Hasbro's overall market cap is at about $14 billion. Now Hasbro has responded to Alta Fox, saying they believe they are, quote, "on the right path to deliver sustainable growth." So a very interesting situation to manage and comes here after Hasbro shares up 2% over the past five years, as S&P 500 up 90%.

JULIE HYMAN: Yeah, that Wizards of the Coast, by the way, includes the classic game, "Dungeons and Dragons," as well, not just the new fangled online stuff, but that classic player game. It's interesting here because Alta Fox is not a household name, right, when it comes to activists. So it's interesting here that we see some of these more recent activist campaigns being conducted by sort of newcomers to the activist base or upstarts in the activist base.

That's been an interesting thread that we've been following, even as some of the classic activists have also been quite active, for lack of a better word, as well. Even if they haven't been waging campaigns, have been outspoken. There was a story in "The Wall Street Journal" today about Dan Loeb of Third Point sort of talking up Amazon.

Hasbro Reports Mixed Results, Analysts Still Positive as Profit Guidance is Raised

Hasbro (NASDAQ:HAS) reported worse-than-expected adjusted earnings per share for the first quarter.

The play and entertainment company reported Q4 adjusted EPS of 57c, down from 1$ per share in the year-ago period and below the consensus estimates of 64c per share. Net revenue came in at $1.16 billion, up 4.3% YOY and just above the consensus projection of $1.15 billion.

The operating margin in Q1 stood at 10.3%, compared to 13.2% in the same period last year.

Moving forward, Hasbro said it expects mid-single-digit growth for adjusted operating profit. The company said it will continue with its share repurchase program and plans to buy back $75 - $100 million this year. The company expects low-single-digit revenue growth in its consumer product business for the full year.

Hasbro noted that supply chain challenges affected product availability, resulting in spring set delays. Furthermore, increased inventory and freight expenses weighed on profits year-over-year. To compensate, Hasbro plans to raise product prices in the second quarter.

"Based on our current plans, we now believe mid-single-digit adjusted operating profit growth and a 16% adjusted operating profit margin is achievable on revenue growth of low- single digits," said Chris Cocks, CEO of Hasbro.

Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng reiterated a Buy rating and a 12-month price target of $111.00 per share.

“We expect HAS to trade higher on the improvement in EBIT guidance (MSD growth v. LSD prior) despite headwinds from supply chain issues and the risk to $100 mn of revenue in Russia. In addition, we're encouraged by HAS' resumption of share repurchases. HAS reiterated its revenue growth outlook for LSD and we're encouraged by better-than-expected momentum in Consumer Products (My Little Pony, Spider-Man) and the upcoming benefits from price increases in 2Q,” Ng said in a memo.

Stifel analyst Drew Crum said that Hasbro reported 1Q results that were “mixed relative to our model,” but he is positive in the context of a slightly raised '22 guidance.

Hasbro (NASDAQ:HAS) shares are down over 2% Wednesday, a day after the company hosted its Investor Day, where it reportedly introduced its "Brand Blueprint 2.0."

In a note to clients following the event, BofA analysts said, "toys aren't immune to macroeconomic pressures."

"Hasbro cut its 2022 ex. FX revenue guidance from up low single digits to flat to slightly down. Including the headwind from FX, Hasbro expects 2022 revenue down 4-5%. Revenue in 3Q is now expected to be down 15% (down 12% ex. FX) with operating profit down more. This is materially worse than the Street had modeled (3QE revenue -3.5%)," wrote the analysts.

They added that Hasbro had warned on its second-quarter call that the third quarter had challenging compares, and "revenue was pulled forward into 2Q as retailers ordered early, but these results are worse than expected."

BofA cut its price target on the stock to $83 from $91, reiterating a Buy rating.

Elsewhere, Goldman Sachs reiterated a Buy rating and a $101 price target on Hasbro. Analysts there told investors its "Brand Blueprint 2.0" refocuses the company on gaming, digital, and direct-to consumer and "provided new 2027 financial targets including MSD revenue CAGR to $8.5 bn and 20% EBIT margins, implying $1.7 bn of EBIT."

"HAS negatively preannounced 3Q22 including a revenue decline of -15% yoy (v. FactSet consensus: -4% yoy) and -12% yoy constant currency and for EBIT margin declines. HAS lowered its 2022 full-year revenue outlook to flat to down slightly in constant currency (v. +LSD prior) & down 4-5% reported but reiterated its EBIT margin outlook for 16%," added the analysts.

(Reuters) -Hasbro Inc topped Wall Street estimates for quarterly revenue on Thursday as players snapped up its "Magic: The Gathering" game sets, helping counter weak demand for its toys and action figures.

The company's shares were up about 9% at $56.09.

An overall slowdown in demand for toys and retailers cutting back on orders to manage their inventories are set to temper the U.S. toy industry this year, with Hasbro (NASDAQ:HAS) expecting the toys and games market to remain flat or decline this year.

However, Hasbro saw a 16% jump in revenue from its "Magic: The Gathering" tabletop and digital game, with fans piling on the February release of its "Phyrexia: All Will Be One" game set.

That helped the Monopoly board game maker offset a 23% slump in revenue at its consumer products segment, its largest business unit, stemming from weaker demand for NERF blasters, Play-Doh and Peppa Pig toys.

While Hasbro is still cautious about consumer spending, it is banking on a series of blockbuster movie releases, upcoming "Magic: The Gathering" launches, and expectations of a return to normal shipment levels to retailers to steer through 2023, outgoing CFO Deborah Thomas said.

The company reported first-quarter adjusted earnings in line with analysts' estimates and maintained its annual sales and profit forecasts.

In contrast, rival Mattel Inc (NASDAQ:MAT) on Wednesday posted a bigger-than-expected quarterly loss, pinched by retailers trimming orders for its Barbie and Hot Wheels toys.

"'Magic: The Gathering' is becoming a monster brand with a steady stream of new product releases that are fueling sales. Leaning into gaming in Q1 helped (Hasbro) offset some of the inventory struggles ... on the toy side of the business," James Zahn, editor-in-chief of trade magazine "The Toy Book", said.

Hasbro's net revenue fell 14% to $1.00 billion in the quarter, but beat analysts' estimates of $878.4 million, according to Refinitiv IBES data.

Hasbro to sell film and TV unit, cuts forecast on Hollywood strike hit

(Reuters) -Hasbro lowered its annual revenue forecast on an expected hit from the ongoing strike by Hollywood writers and actors and said it would divest its film and TV business to focus on selling toys and games.

Shares in the company, which beat second-quarter revenue estimates, rose 1.5% in premarket trading.

Hasbro (NASDAQ:HAS) said it would sell its eOne film and TV studio to Lionsgate Entertainment by year-end for about $500 million, adding that its revenue forecast includes the performance of the business being sold.

Hasbro became one of the first companies to flag a disruption to its business from the industry strike which enjoys support from thousands of Hollywood actors, and has left scores of shows and movies in limbo.

"With the sale of its eOne Film & TV business to Lionsgate, Hasbro is dodging a bullet in terms of the content pipeline. With productions stalled due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, eventually, the output will be affected," said James Zahn, editor-in-chief at The Toy Book.

The company said its margins at its entertainment segment are expected to decline due to strikes as well as a $25 million "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" production asset impairment charge.

Hasbro also lowered its growth target for adjusted operating margin to between 20 basis points (bps) and 50 bps, from 50 bps to 70 bps rise forecast earlier.

The company forecast fiscal 2023 revenue to decline 3% to 6%, compared with its previous outlook of a low-single-digit fall, as entertainment segment revenue is expected to drop between 25% and 30%.

The Monopoly maker's net revenue, which fell 10% to $1.21 billion in the quarter ended July 2, beat analysts' average estimate of $1.12 billion, according to Refinitiv IBES data.
