UnitedHealth Earnings Crush Amid Coronavirus, But Guidance Stays Put; UNH Stock Edges Higher

UnitedHealth Group (UNH) kicked off second-quarter earnings season for the coronavirus-exposed managed care group early Wednesday, blowing past Wall Street profit estimates. But management stuck by its guidance for full-year UnitedHealth earnings. UNH stock, a Dow Jones component, tilted higher in early stock market action after the report.

UnitedHealth credited the "temporary deferral of care" due to coronavirus lockdown measures for the earnings surge, which came despite light revenue. But management expects the windfall "will be offset in the quarters ahead by the (customer and provider) assistance measures already taken, the resumption of deferred care and future Covid-19 cost and economic impacts."

With coronavirus cases leveling off in April and receding in May, states began to roll back restrictions on nonemergency procedures. Still, social distancing restrictions lowered UnitedHealth's outlays on medical costs for insured members in Q2, a positive for earnings. That more than offset cost increases for coronavirus testing and treating Covid-19 patients.

UnitedHealth Earnings
Estimates: Analysts expected UnitedHealth earnings of $5.08 a share, up 41% vs. a year earlier. Revenue was seen rising 5.3% to $63.81 billion, according to Zacks Investment Research.

Results: UnitedHealth earnings vaulted 98% to $7.12 a share. Revenue climbed 2.5% to $62.138 billion.

UnitedHealth's Optum medical services division saw 16.6% revenue growth. Its UnitedHealthcare managed care division saw 1% growth.

Medical costs fell to 70.2% of premiums, down from 83.1% a year ago.

Medicare Advantage customers edged up by 30,000 from Q1 to 5.605 million. Medicaid members jumped 330,000 with wins in Indiana and Kentucky. Commercial insurance members served by UnitedHealth fell 270,000 to 26.77 million. That followed a 720,000 drop in Q1, as the coronavirus lockdown set off massive layoffs.

Outlook: UnitedHealth maintained 2020 EPS guidance ranging from $16.25 to $16.55. Going into Q2 results, analysts expected UnitedHeath earnings per share of $16.30 this year. Management has stuck by 2020 earnings guidance first offered in mid-January, even as the coronavirus shutdown roiled earnings for many sectors.

UNH Stock
Shares rose 0.5% to 310 before Wednesday's open. After a three-session rally, UnitedHealth stock closed Tuesday within 2% of a 315.94 buy point from a flat base, according to MarketSmith.

Still, one ingredient that increases chances of investor success is light for UNH stock and the broader managed care industry group: relative strength. UnitedHealth's RS line, the blue line in IBD charts, has improved a bit lately, but it has mainly drifted lower since peaking on April 16.

UnitedHealth Earnings Thump Estimates With UNH Stock In Buy Range

JED GRAHAM09:13 AM ET 10/14/2020
UnitedHealth Group (UNH) kicked off third-quarter earnings season for the managed care group by easily beating Wall Street profit and sales estimates early Wednesday. UNH stock, a Dow Jones component, fell slightly following the report but remained in buy range.

Still, UnitedHealth earnings fell from a year ago, partly reversing a Q2 profit windfall, when earnings per share surged 98%, as the coronavirus lockdown led Americans to forgo nonemergency medical care. UnitedHealth has stressed that deferred care and the cost of voluntary customer and provider assistance measures would work against earnings in the second half.

."We're encouraged to see those we serve respond to the incentives we offered to safely seek care as the health system continued to recover in the quarter," UnitedHealth CEO David Wichmann, said in a statement.

UnitedHealth Earnings
Estimates: Analysts expected UnitedHealth earnings of $2.98 a share, down 23% vs. a year earlier. Revenue was seen rising 5.7% to $63.79 billion, according to Zacks Investment Research.

Results: UnitedHealth earnings per share fell 9.5% to $3.51. Revenue climbed 7.9% to $65.115 billion, led by a 21% jump in revenue for the Optum health services division to $34.9 billion.

Medical costs fell to 81.9% of premiums vs. 82.4% a year ago, but rose from just 70.2% in Q2 amid coronavirus lockdowns.

Medicare Advantage customers edged up by 65,000 from Q2 to 5.67 million. Medicaid members rose 225,000 to 6.435 million. Commercial insurance members served by UnitedHealth fell 420,000 to 26.35 million, hurt by coronavirus job losses earlier in the year.

Outlook: UnitedHealth increased its full-year outlook for EPS to a range of $16.50 to $16.75 from prior guidance of $16.25 to $16.55.

UnitedHealth Earnings
Estimates: Analysts expected UnitedHealth earnings of $2.39 a share, down 39% vs. a year earlier. Revenue was seen rising 7% to $65.24 billion, according to Zacks Investment Research.

Results: UnitedHealth adjusted earnings per share fell 35% to $2.52. Revenue climbed 7.5% to $65.467 billion, led by 20% growth in revenue for the Optum health services division to $35.9 billion.

Medicare Advantage customers rose 440,000 from a year ago to 5.71 million. Medicaid members rose 720,000 to 6.62 million. Commercial insurance members served by UnitedHealth fell 1.54 million to 26.22 million amid the Covid-related rise in unemployment.

Outlook: UnitedHealth reiterated 2021 guidance for adjusted EPS of $17.75 to $18.25. That builds in a hit of $1.80 per share due to Covid costs, deferred care and related factors. Analysts expect UnitedHealth earnings per share of $18.23.

(Reuters) -UnitedHealth Group Inc on Friday topped expectations for first-quarter results but shares fell 3% after the company failed to address investor worries over high costs next year due to policy changes for government-backed health insurance plans.

U.S. health insurers have been under pressure since February when the government proposed new rules for an audit program to avoid overpayment.

Reimbursement rates - or the government payment rates - for health insurers for 2024 introduced in March resulted in a 1.1% average cut, though better than the initial proposal.

The rates determine how much health insurers can charge as monthly premiums, plan benefits and profits.

Emerging regulatory related concerns, including those around Medicare Advantage program, appear to be weighing on shares at UnitedHealth (NYSE:UNH) and the industry, as uncertainty about profit growth beyond 2023 continues, said Morningstar analyst Julie Utterback.

Rivals Humana (NYSE:HUM) and Elevance Health fell between 1% and 2% in early trading. UnitedHealth was the biggest drag on the blue-chip Dow Jones Index.

Medicare Advantage are offered by private insurers as an alternative to the original Medicare - the federal government's health insurance plan for people aged 65 and older or those with certain disabilities.

Medicare and Medicaid memberships make up a third of the UnitedHealth's health insurance business. The company said it added 655,000 Medicare Advantage members and 570,000 Medicaid members in the quarter.

The company intends to pull back members no longer eligible for Medicaid - plans that cover costs for low-income individuals - to its commercial offerings by extending annual enrollment periods for employers and increase subsidies, including plans with no monthly premium.

UnitedHealth raised its adjusted 2023 profit forecast to between $24.50 and $25 per share, compared with its earlier estimate of $24.40 to $24.90 and market expectations of $24.94.

Excluding items, it reported a first-quarter profit of $6.26 per share, beating estimates of $6.13, helped by lower medical costs and strength in its government-backed insurance plans.

UnitedHealth (UNH) gapped down on rising medical-cost ratios — a key metric for profitability. Medical-cost ratios measure medical expenses paid by insurance companies vs. premiums collected. UNH stock has undercut its base and fallen below its 50-day line in strong volume — both sell signals.
