Northrop Grumman wins $13.3 billion missile replacement contract

(Reuters) - Defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corp (NYSE:NOC) said on Tuesday it was awarded a $13.3 billion contract by the U.S. Air Force to modernize the country's intercontinental ballistic missile system.

The contract comes as the U.S. military embarks on a costly modernization of its aging atomic weapons.

The contract will span eight and a half years and include weapon system design and nuclear certification. The company will deliver a fully-integrated weapon system by 2029.

Zaledwie miesiąc temu firma Northrop Grumman poinformowała, że końca dobiega budowa pierwszych dwóch egzemplarzy zupełnie nowego bombowca B-21 Raider i wkrótce będą one gotowe do lotów testowych.

Jak na razie rolę bombowców w armii amerykańskiej spełniają wiekowe już konstrukcje B-1 oraz B-2. W całej armii znajduje się 61 egzemplarzy B-1 Lancer, 20 egzemplarzy B-2 Spirit oraz 76 sztuk B-52 Stratofortress. Teraz jednak Siły Powietrzne chcą zdecydowanie zmodernizować swój park samolotów. B-21 będą przystosowane do przenoszenia zarówno broni konwencjonalnej jak i jądrowej i stopniowo będą zastępowały B-1 oraz B-2. B-52 Stratofortress pozostanie w zasobach armii co najmniej do lat czterdziestych.

W przeciwieństwie do wielu innych projektów zarówno wojskowych (lotniskowiec Gerald R. Ford) czy kosmicznych (Kosmiczny Teleskop Jamesa Webba), jak na razie realizacja projektu B-21 przebiega zgodnie z harmonogramem i mieści się w założonym budżecie.

Tak samo jak B-1 i B-2, B-21 Raider będzie służył w armii zarówno jako bombowiec, ale także jako długodystansowy samolot zwiadowczy. To duży krok nie tylko dla armii, która zamówiła ponad 100 egzemplarzy nowego samolotu, ale także dla całego przemysłu. B-21 będzie pierwszym bombowcem opracowanym w XXI wieku. Prace nad jego stworzeniem rozpoczęły się w 2015 roku.

Jeżeli cała flota B-1 oraz B-2 ma zostać zastąpiona przez B-21 to armia najprawdopodobniej rozszerzy swoje zamówienie do nawet 150 sztuk. Za pierwsze 100 sztuk amerykańscy podatnicy zapłacą 639 mln dol. za sztukę. Dalsze egzemplarze najprawdopodobniej będą droższe.

Investing.com - Northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC) reported on Thursday second quarter earnings that missed analysts' forecasts and revenue that fell short of expectations.

Northrop Grumman announced earnings per share of $6.06 on revenue of $8.8B. Analysts polled by Investing.com anticipated EPS of $6.1 on revenue of $9.07B.

Northrop Grumman shares are down 12% from the beginning of the year, still down 9.44% from its 52 week high of $492.30 set on June 7. They are outperforming the S&P Global 100 which is down 13.83% from the start of the year.

Northrop Grumman Downgraded But JPM Still Loves the NOC Story

Northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC) was downgraded to Neutral from Overweight, with its price target set at $490 per share at JPMorgan on Friday.

Analysts told investors in a note that they "still love the NOC story," and just because Northrop's positive attributes are widely appreciated does not make them less appealing, but the company is valued at a premium.

"B-21 and GBSD are the franchise programs of this decade and should contribute to years of growth with sustainment further out. NOC is also a leader in Space, a top DoD priority, with a good mix of exquisite programs (e.g. OPIR) and LEO efforts (e.g. Tracking Layer). Strategically, we think Northrop has a strong sense of what it is and where it's going, while on capital deployment, investors appreciate NOC's predictable cash return, even if buying stock back right now is less compelling," wrote the analysts.

However, the analysts added that while valuation may not matter for long periods, Northrop's "pronounced premium to both the group and its history on most metrics stood out to them in preparing for third-quarter earnings."

"With the story outlined above, some of this is deserved, but it appears many premium attributes of Northrop are reflected in NOC. The stock now trades around an all-time high 16.5x forward EBITDA vs. 11.2x for LMT and 12.9x for LHX," added the analysts.

"EV/Sales tells a similar story with NOC trading, near the 10-Y high and 0.6x higher than LMT (See Figure 3). (LHX is higher reflecting its better margins.) NOC trades well above LHX and LMT on pension-adj EPS and its FCF sub 4% FCF yield on 2023 is exceptionally low for Defense."

(Reuters) -U.S. defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corp (NYSE:NOC) on Thursday said it expected full-year sales and profit to be near the lower end of its forecast, amid lingering supply chain snags and higher costs that have weighed on earnings throughout the industry.

The company's shares were down 4.9% at $505 before the bell despite forecasting 4% to 5% revenue growth in 2023.

Northrop had forecast 2022 sales in the range of $36.2 billion to $36.6 billion, and a profit per share between $24.50 and $25.10.

Defense companies, still reeling from higher costs and labor shortages, continue to suffer from supply chain constraints that have impacted production at these companies and their suppliers.

Northrop, is now seeing improving trends in labor availability after struggling with labor challenges caused by the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

"Labor availability is gradually improving as 2020 has progressed," Chief Financial Officer Dave Keffer told Reuters in an interview giving kudos to his human resources team.

There was "a lot of day-to-day blocking and tackling across a business of our size to have 2700 net hires" in the quarter, he said.

Revenue at its Aeronautics Systems unit, which manufactures military aircrafts such as the B-21 Raider, fell about 7% to $2.54 billion in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, due to lower sales of planes and autonomous aircraft systems.

Overall revenue rose 3% in the quarter to $8.97 billion, but missed analysts' average expectation of $9.13 billion, as per Refinitiv data.

"The Space segment will remain the biggest driver for the next couple years with GBSD, Space Development Agency wins," Wolfe Research analyst Myles Walton wrote in a note earlier this month.

Sales at the Space Systems division, aided by higher demand for space exploration, rose about 18% to $3.16 billion, helping the Falls Church, Virginia-based company offset lower sales at the aeronautics and defense units.

Northrop reported a 14% fall in quarterly adjusted net earnings to $915 million, or $5.89 per share, below expectations of $6.11 per share.

Its year-to-date book-to-bill, which is a ratio of orders received to units shipped and billed, was 1.14.
