Delta Air Lines Slips on Lower 2019 Profit Forecast
Shares of Delta Airlines slip Thursday after the Atlanta based carrier's 2019 profit forecast fell short of expectations
Shares of Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL - Get Report) slipped 4.85% to close at $53.55 Thursday after the Atlanta-based carrier's 2019 profit forecast fell short of expectations.

During a meeting with investors, Delta said it will report a profit of $6 to $7 per share next year. The lower end of the forecast fell short of Wall Street's expectations of $6.70 per share.

CEO Ed Bastian said Delta would continue segmenting its cabins with an increased focus on higher-margin premium products, which now account for 30% of Delta's revenue stream, or twice the amount from six years ago. He said travel demand remains solid.

Delta plans to increase average seats per aircraft by 2% annually between 2018 and 2023, with premium seats increasing by 40% on every aircraft.

The airline said it expects a $300 million drop in oil prices in 2019. Oil prices registered the steepest monthly decline since 2008 in November.

Delta expects to increase capacity by 3% next year. In January, United Continental Holdings (UAL - Get Report) said it wants to increase capacity by 4 to 6% through 2020. In addition, Delta said it expects $3 billion to $4 billion in free cash flow and about $4.5 billion in capital expenditures.

Other airlines were feeling the heat Thursday: Southwest Airlines (LUV - Get Report) fell 1.20 to $50.29; United Continental Holdings fell 2.89% to $87.04; JetBlue Airways (JBLU - Get Report) slipped 2.32% to $17.24; and American Airlines Group (AAL - Get Report) lost 4.57% to $32.78.

Delta Airlines earnings and revenue came in better than expected Wednesday, kicking off airline earnings. In morning trade, Delta Air Lines stock rose, along with United Airlines (UAL), American Airlines (AAL), Southwest Airlines (LUV) and JetBlue (JBLU).

Delta Stock's Must-Hold Support Level Post-Earnings

Shares of Delta Air Lines (DAL - Get Report) are rising in Thursday's midday trading session, up 1.4% to $60.30 after the company's better-than-expected earnings report.

Delta reported second-quarter non-GAAP earnings of $2.35 per share, beating analysts' estimates by 7 cents per share and growing 32% year-over-year. Revenue of $12.5 billion was in-line with expectations.

Mostly in-line results with better-than-expected profit may be enough of a pass for a stock like Delta, given that the stock trades at less than 10 times earnings. Perhaps some bulls feel this mild reaction isn't enough, though.

Management approved a 15% increase to the dividend, so Delta stock now yields almost 2.7%. Further, they increased their full-year guidance range to between $6.75 and $7.25 per share. That's slightly ahead of consensus estimates between $6.90 and $6.97 per share.

Overall, it was a solid quarter, while a dividend hike and guidance boost are even better. The third quarter is off to a solid start, too, with Delta President Glen Hauenstein saying, "Our third quarter is off to a great start with a new highest revenue day on record on July 7."

Delta Air Lines said Friday NYSE: DAL that it will fully transfer its U.S.-Tokyo flights from Narita International Airport to Tokyo International Airport at Haneda, bringing its operations closer to central Tokyo.

The U.S. airline will transfer all of its flights linking Narita and five U.S. cities, including Atlanta and Seattle, to Haneda in March next year.

The shift will make Delta the largest U.S. airline serving Haneda, with flights to and from seven U.S. cities.

Delta will also cancel its service between Narita and Singapore next month and between Narita and Manila in March as it completely withdraws from the Chiba Prefecture airport.

For operations within Asia, Delta will utilize the networks of its partner, Korean Air, whose primary hub is Incheon International Airport near Seoul.

The withdrawal from Narita is nothing but a shift to Haneda and there is no change in the importance of the Japanese market for Delta, a company official said. The move will contribute to improving its services, the official said.

The central government on Thursday announced a date for the introduction of new flight paths over Tokyo to increase capacity at Haneda airport in the run-up to the 2020 Olympics.

On March 29, planes will be able for the first time to descend and climb over densely populated Shibuya, Shinjuku and Shinagawa wards in central Tokyo.

By strengthening the airport’s capacity for international flights, the government aims to raise the annual number of foreign visitors to 40 million by 2020.

The new routes will increase the number of available international arrival and departure slots at Haneda from the current 60,000 to about 99,000.

Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL) reported third-quarter 2019 results before markets opened Thursday. The airline reported adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.32 on adjusted revenues of $12.6 billion. In the same period a year ago, Delta reported EPS of $1.80 on revenues of $11.95 billion. Third-quarter results also compare to the consensus estimates for EPS of $2.26 on revenues of $12.6 billion.

The airline guided fourth-quarter 2019 EPS in a range of $1.20 to $1.50 on a pretax margin of 9.5% to 11.5%. Unit revenue, excluding refinery sales, is forecast to rise 4% to 5%. Seating capacity is expected to rise by about 4.5% and consolidated available seat miles are forecast to rise by 4% to 5%.
