Alcoa to największy producent aluminium w USA.

Stopa dywidendy będzie jednak skromna i wyniesie 0,8 proc.

Alcoa (NYSE:AA) shares declined 4% Thursday after the aluminum firm missed profit expectations when it reported its fourth quarter earnings after the close on Wednesday.

Alcoa posted a Q4 loss of $0.70 per share, $0.03 worse than the analyst estimate of a loss of $0.67 per share. Revenue came in at $2.7 billion versus the consensus estimate of $2.66B.

The company said it experienced challenging market conditions during the quarter, which included high costs for raw materials and energy and lower sequential pricing in the Alumina and Aluminum segments in the fourth quarter.

"Last year, global turbulence negatively influenced costs for energy and raw materials, and we saw significant variance on product pricing between the first and second halves of 2022," said Alcoa President and CEO Roy Harvey. "We are taking actions to further improve, and we have the experience, rigor, and skill to drive excellence across our global operations with disciplined cost management."

Looking forward, Alcoa said it sees total alumina shipments to range between 12.7 million and 12.9 million metric tons, a decrease of 0.5 million metric tons from last year due to the partial curtailment of the San ***** refinery and lower bauxite quality at the Australian refineries.

Following the release, B Riley analysts told investors in a note that Alcoa "reported 4Q22 adjusted EBITDA (excluding special items) of $29M, below our and consensus estimates of $107M. The miss versus our estimates was primarily driven by higher production costs, along with a $25M charge for ARO obligations at the Alumar refinery."

"Looking ahead, Alcoa expects to benefit from lower natural gas prices in Europe, along with moderating coke prices, but management believes it's too early to have certainty around energy costs beyond 1Q. We now estimate 1Q23 EBITDA of $132M (from $258M) and 2023 EBITDA of $1,264M (from $1,501M), mostly on higher alumina costs. We maintain our Neutral rating with a $42 PT (from $41) as our lower near-term estimates are offset by a slightly higher long-term price deck," added the analysts.

Meanwhile, Citi analysts said the company reported a weak quarter, but prices and costs are trending in the right direction for Q1.

"Alcoa reported adj. 4Q22 EBITDA of $29m vs Citi at $69m – we would consider this only a very modest miss vs $2.7bn of revenues. 1Q23 results will likely include $115m of lower costs in the aluminum segment – mostly Norway energy – but management noted that key inputs remain surprisingly sticky," wrote the analysts.

Alcoa to benefit from potential 200% Russian aluminum tax - Jefferies

Following reports on Monday that the U.S. is set to impose a 200% tariff on Russian-made aluminum, Jefferies analysts said Alcoa Corp (NYSE:AA) will benefit.

The reported move by the U.S. is in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine and speculation of Russian aluminum being "dumped" on the U.S. market.

"US aluminum imports from Russia trended lower in '22, and such steep tariffs should effectively end US imports of the metal from Russia and tighten the US market, in our view," said analysts.

"While we remain cautious on aluminum in the near-term, Alcoa would stand to benefit from the likely end to US imports of Russian aluminum," they add.

The analysts explain that in recent years, the U.S. has imported up to 90% of primary aluminum used in domestic manufacturing, mostly from Canada, with the imports subject to tariffs that directly impact the price and supply of aluminum in the U.S.

However, with Russian imports likely coming to an end due to the reported 200% tariff, Jefferies expects lower imports to weigh on supply-demand balances in the U.S. and lead to higher regional premiums.

"US-based sales have accounted for approximately 45% of Alcoa's third-party sales over the last three years, and continued elevated US regional premiums should lead to high realized pricing versus benchmark LME for Alcoa. Redirected future sales in response to a tighter US market would clearly be a positive as well," analysts concluded.

Alcoa stock gains as Citi upgrades to Buy on positive aluminum view

Citi analysts upgraded Alcoa (NYSE:AA) stock to Buy from Neutral as they believe aluminum is the next leg of China reopening trade.

The new price target is $65 per share, up $10 from the prior $55, which reflects a more positive near-term outlook on aluminum. Citi's commodity team projects aluminum prices of $2700/t in the near term, which could eventually spike to $3000/t.

The current market price stands at around $2465/t.

"Aluminum has relatively light positioning, tends to arrive late to bull market parties, is relatively lightly positioned, and has a myriad of idiosyncratic upside risks as well as being exposed to macroeconomic- (including major credit easing and higher oil prices) and El Niño-related supply-side risks. The rolling smelter cuts from southwestern China due to power availability restrict supply response to margins," the analysts wrote in a client note.

They also note that investors seem to be more focused on copper and coal, while Alcoa looks to be "relatively out of favor."

"The current valuation is 8-9x spot EBITDA (~$1.2bn 2023E on $2,450/t) and at 4.5x on Citi’s estimate 2024 (~$2.1bn on $2,900/t). The balance sheet is strong. FCF is limited at spot, although working capital should be a tailwind. We increase our 2023 EBITDA estimate 10% to $1.5bn based on latest metals prices forecasts from Citi’s global commodities team," the analysts added.

Alcoa shares are up over 2% in pre-market Wednesday.

Morgan Stanley sees Alcoa shares facing downward pressure

Alcoa (NYSE:AA) was cut to Underweight from Equal Weight at Morgan Stanley on Thursday, with analysts lowering the firm's price target on the stock to $33 from $43 per share.

The analysts explained that sluggish fundamentals will cap the recent rally for Americas metals and mining stocks. AA shares are down more than 5% at the time of writing.

"Mining equities may continue their recent move higher on sentiment around China stimulus for a bit longer, but we don't think the rally is sustainable," they wrote. "Weak global growth despite China's services-led recovery, a stronger USD, and fair valuation will cap mining share performance."

For Alcoa, the firm sees a material downside to consensus estimates.

"As negative earnings revisions materialize, we believe the stock will face downward pressure and underperform," the analysts added.

"In 2Q23, our EBITDA estimate of $146m is ~22% below the consensus of $189m; in 2023, our $701m estimate is ~36% below the consensus of $1,092m; and in 2024 our $954m estimate is ~49% below the consensus of $1,897m. At 8.9x on our 2024e EBITDA, the stock is trading well above its historical average of 6.5x. In addition, the large negative revisions in our earnings estimates and PT are mainly due to the high operating leverage AA has to aluminum prices."
