Tokyo Electric Power Company, Incorporated jap. 東京電力ホールディングス株式会社 TYO: 9501 spółka znana także jako Toden (jap. 東電 ) lub TEPCO, to firma zajmująca się produkcją, przesyłaniem i dystrybucją energii elektrycznej na terenie Wielkiego Tokio, regionu Kantō,, prefektury Yamanashi oraz wschodniej części prefektury Shizuoka. Jej główna siedziba znajduje się w Uchisaiwai-chō, w tokijskiej dzielnicy Chiyoda. Firma posiada swoje biura przedstawicielskie w Waszyngtonie i Londynie.

Firma jest czwartą największą na świecie w swojej branży, a największą w Azji. Posiada 3 elektrownie jądrowe (17 reaktorów), 26 cieplnych i 160 elektrowni wodnych. Całkowita ilość energii elektrycznej, sprzedawanej przez nią rocznie, jest równa ilości zużywanej w ciągu roku przez Włochy. Jej udział w japońskim rynku elektryczności wynosi ok. 1/3 i choć w kraju działa jeszcze 10 firm z tej branży, TEPCO ma w niej wiodącą pozycję.

W 2007 roku w wyniku trzęsienia ziemi firma została zmuszona do wyłączenia elektrowni atomowej Kashiwazaki-Kariwa (największej siłowni jądrowej na świecie), co skutkowało ogłoszeniem pierwszych od 28 lat strat. W 2008 roku elektrownia nie została ponownie uruchomiona i firma ogłosiła drugi rok strat. Trzy nie działające reaktory elektrowni uruchomiono na przełomie lat 2009/2010.

W 2011 roku w następstwie dużego trzęsienia ziemi i tsunami nastąpiła awaria w elektrowni atomowej Fukushima I należącej do TEPCO. Awaria została zaklasyfikowana jako 7 - najgroźniejsze w skali zdarzeń jądrowych podobnie jak katastrofa w Czarnobylu. Zgodnie z instrukcjami bezpieczeństwa ewakuowano mieszkańców w promieniu 20 km od elektrowni. Dodatkowo, rząd japoński zarządził dobrowolną ewakuację ludności w odległości między 20 a 30 kilometrem od elektrowni.

Jak poinformowały później japońskie media okazało się, że TEPCO wiedziało dużo wcześniej o zagrożeniu ze strony wielkiego tsunami, ale nie podwyższyło osłony przed tsunami. Firma potwierdziła medialne doniesienia i przyznała, że ponosi winę za katastrofę jądrową. TEPCO tłumaczyło, że nie wprowadziło zabezpieczeń "żeby nie szerzyć poczucia zagrożenia co do energetyki jądrowej w społeczeństwie". Kolejną powodem rezygnacji z poprawy zabezpieczeń były wysokie koszty, których operator nie chciał ponieść.

Tokyo, Jan. 7 (Jiji Press)--TEPCO Power Grid Inc., Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.'s <9501> electricity supply and distribution unit, asked companies that have in-house power generators to offer electricity to ease a power crunch amid a cold wave, informed sources said.
The power company previously sought the provision of electricity from firms with generators right after the 2011 major earthquake and tsunami, which mainly hit northeastern Japan. It is the first time for TEPCO Power Grid to make such a request since it was established in April 2015.

Tepco shares slump 10% after regulator slams breaches at nuclear station

TOKYO (Reuters) - Shares of Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) fell the most in eight years on Wednesday after Japan’s atomic regulator found safety breaches at its Kashiwazaki Kariwa station and a government minister said the plant will not restart soon.

Tepco shares had surged in recent months on hopes it would be able to restart Kashiwazaki Kariwa, the world’s biggest nuclear power station, after years of trying to convince regulators and local residents it had learnt the lessons of the Fukushima disaster 10n years ago.

Regulators used their most serious evaluation - known as a red evaluation - of Tepco’s breaches that included failure to protect nuclear materials.

Also, Tepco’s security missteps led to an unauthorized staff member accessing sensitive areas of Kashiwazaki Kariwa last year.

Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hiroshi Kajiyama told reporters on Tuesday he takes the breaches “seriously” and made it clear that Tepco would not be able to restart the station anytime soon.

TEPCO Apologizes to Niigata Governor over N-Plant Security Flaws

Niigata, March 25 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. <9501> President Tomoaki Kobayakawa on Thursday offered an apology to Niigata Governor Hideyo Hanazumi over a series of security flaws at TEPCO's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in the central Japan prefecture.

"I sincerely apologize for causing great concern," Kobayakawa told Hanazumi at the prefectural government office.

The power company "will make all-out efforts to identify the cause (of the flaws) and advance drastic reforms," Kobayakawa said.

Hanazumi expressed his dissatisfaction with TEPCO, saying that the security flaws, including insufficient measures to protect the facility against possible terror attacks, "seriously damaged Niigata residents' trust in TEPCO."

"Having heard your words of apology, I now want you to demonstrate what you said by action and achievements," the governor said.

Tokyo, April 13 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. <9501> takes seriously a Japanese government decision to release treated radioactive water from its stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant into the ocean, its president, Tomoaki Kobayakawa, said Tuesday.
"We will pay compensation appropriately" if the ocean release of the treated water causes reputational damage to fishery and other products," Kobayakawa told reporters after the government made the decision at a meeting of related ministers earlier in the day.

Tokyo, April 22 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. <9501> is in the final stage of talks on choosing Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corp. <4188> Chairman Yoshimitsu Kobayashi for the post of its chairman, which has been vacant since June 2020, it was learned Thursday.
Kobayashi, 74, an energy policy-savvy economic polemist, who has served as chairman of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives, or Keizai Doyukai, is expected to concurrently serve as chair of TEPCO's board of directors, informed sources said.
