Toshiba net profit up on chip business sale

TOKYO
Struggling Japanese engineering firm Toshiba on Monday reported improved full-year net profit thanks to the sale of its chip business, but said operating profit was sharply down.

In the year that ended March, Toshiba's net profit jumped 26.0 percent to 1.01 trillion yen ($9 billion), chiefly because of "profit from completion of the sale of the Memory business," it said in a statement.

Toshiba "achieved a healthier financial condition by closing the sale of the Memory business, advancing structural reforms that included finalising the sale of the PC business and decided to withdraw from a nuclear power construction project in the UK," the company said.

But the firm said its operating profit dropped 58.9 percent to 35.4 billion yen, partly due to restructuring costs, on sales of 3.69 trillion yen, down 6.4 percent.

For the current year to March 2020, it forecast a jump of 295 percent in operating profit to 140 billion yen, after the completion of restructuring and other projects, on sales of 3.4 trillion yen.

It did not provide net profit forecast, saying it did not have sufficient information on the chip business -- which remains an affiliate.

The Tokyo-based company used to sell everything from rice cookers to nuclear plants and has long been a household name.

But a series of scandals and business losses in recent years have forced the company to withdraw from many operations, such as appliances and personal computers that gave it brand recognition.

To stay afloat, the cash-strapped group sold its lucrative chip business for $21 billion to K.K. Pangea, a special-purpose company controlled by a consortium led by U.S. investor Bain Capital.

Toshiba Corp. reported a net loss Wednesday of ¥145.15 billion ($1.3 billion) for the April-September period, due in part to taking a loss on the sale of a U.S. liquefied natural gas operation.

The company’s net loss compares with a profit of ¥1.08 trillion reported for the same time period a year earlier, when it booked a profit from the sale of a chip unit.

For the first six months of the current fiscal year, the technology conglomerate said its operating profit came to ¥52.05 billion, up from ¥6.98 billion the year before, on sales of ¥1.71 trillion, down 3.7 percent.

The company is continuing its reform efforts following the bankruptcy of its U.S. nuclear power subsidiary in 2017.

For the year through next March, Toshiba maintained its profit guidance, with expectations for annual operating profit to nearly quadruple to ¥140 billion. As for sales, it raised its previous estimate of ¥3.40 trillion to ¥3.44 trillion.

The company did not provide a net profit forecast, citing difficulty in assessing the earnings of an affiliated chip company, Kioxia Holdings Corp., formerly known as Toshiba Memory Holdings Corp., in which Toshiba has a 40.2 percent voting right.

Toshiba sold Toshiba Memory to an international consortium of U.S. private equity firm Bain Capital and South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix Inc. in June last year and reinvested about ¥350 billion in the chip firm.

Tokyo, June 20 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Toshiba Corp. <6502> will sell shares in chipmaker Kioxia Holdings Corp. in stages after its expected stock listing, it was learned Saturday.

The electronics and heavy machinery maker hopes to use the proceeds to increase its rewards to shareholders through an own share buyback and other measures, informed sources said.

Toshiba has an equity stake of around 40 pct in Kioxia, previously called Toshiba Memory Corp.

Toshiba sold the semiconductor business for 2 trillion yen to a consortium led by a U.S. private equity fund in June 2018 to resolve its business crisis due mainly to massive losses at its U.S. nuclear business. Toshiba later made a reinvestment in the chip business.

Kioxia is aiming for a listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's first section within the year. Its market capitalization is expected to reach several trillion yen.

Tokyo, Nov. 11 (Jiji Press)--Toshiba Corp. <6502> said Wednesday that it will shift its focus to renewable energy operations, taking advantage of a global trend toward decarbonization.
"We'll more than triple sales from renewable energy operations in 10 years," to 650 billion yen in the year ending in March 2031, Toshiba President and CEO Nobuaki Kurumatani said in an online press conference.

Tokyo, Nov. 11 (Jiji Press)--Toshiba Corp. <6502> said Wednesday that it expects a return to profitability in the year ending in March 2021.
The Japanese conglomerate said it expects to swing back to a consolidated net profit of 50 billion yen from a loss of 114.6 billion yen the previous year.

Tokyo, Nov. 11 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Toshiba Corp. <6502> has decided to stop taking new orders for the construction of coal-fired power plants, which emit large amounts of carbon dioxide, according to informed sources.
The decision came as the company judged it difficult to secure profitability in the business, with orders for coal-burning plants decreasing amid global efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, the sources said Tuesday.
