Nissan Motor Co Ltd is pressing partner Renault SA to cut its stake in the Japanese automaker and revamp their more than 20-year-old alliance, the Wall Street Journal said on Friday, citing people with knowledge of the talks.

French car firm Renault (EPA:RENA) owns about 43% of Nissan, while the Japanese firm owns 15% of its top shareholder, but without voting rights.

In June, Nissan revealed for the first time some details of its alliance pact with top shareholder Renault that keep the latter from unilaterally increasing its stake beyond 44.4%.

Their talks cover the question of whether Nissan will join Renault's new unit being set up to its house electric vehicle (EV) assets in exchange for its French ally winding down the Nissan stake, the paper said.

Nissan's Chief Operating Officer Ashwani Gupta was among the firm's executives who visited France last month and discussed whether the Japanese car maker would invest in Renault's new EV business, the paper added.

Renault is pushing ahead with plans to split its EV and combustion engine businesses in its bid to catch up with rivals such as Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Volkswagen (ETR:VOWG_p) in the race to cleaner driving.

It expects to unveil a detailed blueprint for the new EV entity this autumn.

Renault and Nissan did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment outside normal working hours.

Nissan, Renault on Bumpy Road to Partnership Review
Tokyo, Nov. 13 (Jiji Press)--Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co. <7201> and its French partner, Renault SA, have run into difficulties in discussions to redraw their partnership because of a dispute over electric vehicle patents.
Long frustrated with its disadvantageous position in the alliance, Nissan has been keen to reduce Renault's stake in the Japanese company from the current 43 pct to 15 pct, the same level as Nissan's stake in Renault.

Nissan, Renault confident of finalising alliance deal soon

TOKYO (Reuters) -Japanese automaker Nissan (OTC:NSANY) and France's Renault (EPA:RENA) are confident the agreements on reshaping their alliance will be signed soon, they both said on Friday.

They were responding to a report by Japanese news agency Jiji which said the final contract to reboot their alliance may be delayed until April or later due to extended discussion on intellectual property, including for electric vehicles.

"The two companies are currently working well together towards the signature of all the definitive agreements. They are confident this will be reached shortly," Nissan said, a comment echoed in a statement by Renault. Neither gave a date.

After months of intense talks, they agreed in January on a sweeping remake of their two-decade-old alliance that will see Renault reduce its stake in Nissan to 15% from about 43% to put them on equal footing.

The partnership, which has grown to include junior member Mitsubishi Motors (OTC:MMTOF), was founded in 1999.

Nissan and Renault also announced in February that the Japanese automaker would buy a stake of up to 15% in Renault's electric vehicle (EV) unit Ampere.

Nissan expects 38% full-year profit rise on stronger sales outlook

TOKYO (Reuters) -Japan's Nissan (OTC:NSANY) Motor Co on Thursday said it expects profit to rise 38% this year on a better outlook for sales, a rosier prospect for the automaker after years of setbacks that included a strained alliance with partner Renault SA (OTC:RNLSY).

The two car companies are now retooling their decades-old automaking partnership, dismantling much of the work of former chairman Carlos Ghosn, whose arrest and subsequent flight from Japan thrust Nissan into its recent years of turmoil.

Nissan sees operating profit rising to 520 billion yen ($3.85 billion) in the financial year that started last month, compared with an average profit forecast of 396.21 billion yen in a poll of 19 analysts by Refinitiv. It also shows significant jump over a 377 billion yen profit in the year just ended.

The improved sales outlook is driven by expectations to sell 29% more cars in North America, or 1.32 million vehicles, and 27% more in Europe. In China, the outlook is more modest, with Nissan expecting volumes to rise 8% to 1.1 million vehicles.

The company has to speed up the way it designs, manufactures and sells cars in China, Chief Operating Officer Ashwani Gupta told a briefing.

Like other global automakers, Nissan has been seeking to regain its footing in key market China, where it has faced growing competition from home-grown auto companies.

Nissan is developing growth plans in areas such as software and electric vehicles (EVs) independent of Renault (EPA:RENA), sources have said, as the two companies work to finalise the terms of their rebalanced alliance by mid-year.

Nissan's operating profit for the three months ended on March 31 came to 87.4 billion yen, versus the 89.81 billion yen average forecast in a poll of 11 analysts. It also compares to a 56 billion yen profit in the same period a year earlier.
