ANA, JAL report soaring profits

Japanese airlines ANA and JAL said Friday that soaring demand for international travel had boosted their bottom line as the country enjoys a tourism boom ahead of the 2020 Olympics.

ANA booked a record operating profit of 165 billion yen ($1.5 billion), up 0.3 percent on the previous year as sales grew more than four percent to 2.05 trillion yen.

"The airline industry in Japan has generally seen strong demand along with a large increase in foreign visitors to Japan," the firm said.

However, net profits fell 23 percent on a year-on-year basis because last year's figures included a one-off gain from integrating a low-cost carrier as a subsidiary.

Looking ahead, ANA forecast net profit would slip 2.5 percent to 108 billion yen and that operating profits would stagnate.

Rival JAL saw net profit rise 11.4 percent to 150.8 billion yen as "demand for international flights expanded." But JAL also predicted headwinds, with net profits seen dropping around 25 percent as costs rise due to the ballooning price of fuel and an expanded fleet.

Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Orbit said it plans to bring its satellite launch system to Japan in partnership with airline operator ANA Holdings Inc, which will provide maintenance and possibly aircraft.

Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne system is undergoing testing with the aim of launching rockets bearing small satellites into space from a modified jumbo jet. The company said it will conduct its first orbital test flight later this year.

Branson’s space ventures, however, have a history of delays, with his space tourism company Virgin Galactic running more than a decade behind the schedule originally promised by the British billionaire.

Virgin Orbit and ANA Holdings, parent of All Nippon Airways (ANA), in a joint statement said they will identify a launch site together with Space Port Japan, an industry-backed body which aims to turn Japan into a space business hub.

The space venture has already announced launch sites in the United States, Guam, Britain and Italy.

Japan’s space industry spans large scale government-backed rocket launches by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd - which launched the Michibiki satellite navigation system - to Interstellar Technologies, a startup backed by internet entrepreneur Takafumi Horie that last month launched its first rocket to reach space.

Tokyo, April 20 (Jiji Press)--ANA Holdings Inc. <9202> said Monday that it has cut its group net profit estimate for fiscal 2019, which ended in March, by 71.3 pct to 27 billion yen, taking a pounding from a slump in travel demand amid the new coronavirus pandemic.
The new projection is down 75.6 pct from the fiscal 2018 net profit, according to the company, which has All Nippon Airways under the wing.

Tokyo, Oct. 14 (Jiji Press)--Five Japanese banks plan to provide a total of 400 billion yen in subordinated loans to ANA Holdings Inc., whose All Nippon Airways unit has been financially struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic, informed sources said Wednesday.
Subordinated loans have a lower repayment priority than ordinary loans and can be partly treated as capital. The banks are expected to sign loan contracts as early as this month.
