Tesla Market Cap Now More Than 30% of Apple's

Tesla Inc.’s (NASDAQ: TSLA) market capitalization has jumped to $697 billion. Extraordinarily, the company’s value stands higher than those of either Berkshire Hathaway or Walmart. It also has reached the point where its market value has topped 30% of that of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), the most valuable public corporation in the world. At the start of 2020, that figure was closer to 5%. The number fans the flames of arguments that Tesla must be overvalued.

In the past year, Apple’s shares have risen 77%, as Tesla’s have surged 730% higher. While Apple is the most profitable tech company in the world, Tesla does little more than breakeven. Tesla sold approximately 500,000 cars last year, which does not even put it into the top 20 car companies worldwide in terms of vehicle sales by manufacturer.

Apple has climbed its way to its current $2.24 trillion market cap on the back of an iPhone franchise that would produce unit sales of almost 100 million in the first half of this year. In the fiscal year that just ended, iPhone revenue reached $138 billion, of Apple’s total $260 billion. The high end of expectation is that iPhone revenue could rise above $175 billion in the current fiscal year.

Apple’s fastest emerging business, which it calls “services,” posted revenue of $54 billion last year. Apple’s management argues this is Apple’s growth sweet spot. This revenue includes Apple’s App Store, Apple Pay, Apple Music and Apple TV. Ten years ago, this segment of Apple’s revenue amounted to little more than a rounding error.

What has Tesla done to have a market value of 30% of Apple’s? As a part of the auto industry, the argument turns on its role as the popularizer of electric cars. Nevertheless, Tesla’s sole direct benefit of this is its auto revenue annual run rate of $40 billion with a net income run rate of only $1 billion.

Apple has built a moat that cannot be crossed by any other company in the world. It combines brand, research and development, product design and marketing. Its device ownership base around the world numbers in the billions. Most of the foundations of this work stretch back decades. Tesla, on the other hand, faces competition that becomes more vicious by the day. Every major car company in the world already has or will release its own electric vehicle (EV) products. General Motors believes it can sell a million EVs in 2025. The market soon will be awash with competition. Tesla may continue to hold a technology edge, but that will not entirely protect it from the onslaught.

Thirty percent of Apple is too much.

Q4 Deliveries Send Tesla Shares to New High, Boost Chinese Competitors
Paul Ausick
January 4, 2021 10:20 am
The three China-based electric vehicle (EV) makers that investors watch most closely have all reported deliveries for the month of December, the fourth quarter of 2020 and the full-year. All three more than doubled deliveries compared to deliveries in 2019.

Over the weekend, U.S. EV maker Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) reported a preliminary total of 499,550 vehicles in 2020, just inches short of its goal of 500,000. Its three Chinese competitors combined deliver nearly 87,000, less than 20% of Tesla’s yearly total.

The first of the three to reveal 2020 deliveries was Li Auto Inc. (NASDAQ: LI). The Beijing-based company delivered 6,126 vehicles in December, up 32% month over month and nearly 530% year over year. Fourth-quarter deliveries totaled 14,464, up 67% year over year. For the full year, deliveries totaled 32,624.

Li Auto began volume deliveries of its Li ONE model in November of 2019 and had delivered more than 10,000 by the time of its July 2020 IPO.

Xpeng Inc. (NYSE: XPEV) reported December deliveries of 5,700 vehicles, up 35% month over month and 326% year over year. Quarterly sales totaled 12,964, up 51% sequentially and 303% year over year. For the full year, Xpeng delivered 27,401 vehicles, up 112% year over year.

Xpeng completed its IPO in August, raising $1.5 billion and closing its first trading session up 67% from the IPO price of $15 per share.

Tesla’s 2020 deliveries rose from 367,656 in 2019, up about 36% year over year.

The largest of the three Chinese companies, Nio Ltd. (NYSE: NIO), reported Sunday that it had delivered 7,007 vehicles in December, up 121% year over year. For the quarter, Nio delivered 17,353 EVs, up by 111% year over year. Full-year deliveries totaled 43,728, a jump of nearly 113% year over year.

On Saturday, January 9, the company is scheduled to introduce its fourth model, a new sedan, to join the ES8 top-of-the-line SUV, ES6 high-performance SUV and EC6, its premium coupe.

In addition to vehicles, Tesla and its Chinese competitors have delivered piles of new shares to willing investors. Nio completed two secondary offerings in 2020 that raised around $4 billion. Li Auto and Xpeng have each completed one follow-on offering, raising $1.6 billion and $2.2 billion, respectively.

But the heavyweight champion remains Tesla, which raised $12 billion (gross proceeds) in three secondary stock offerings last year.

In the first trading session of 2021, Tesla shares traded up about 4.6% to $738.35, above the prior 52-week range of $70.10 to $718.72. The previous high was posted last Thursday. The consensus price target on the stock is just $431.33.

Li Auto shares traded up about 9.7%, at $31.62 in a 52-week range of $14.31 to $47.70. The stock’s consensus price target is $32.93.

Xpeng traded up about 7.7% to $46.13, in a 52-week range of $17.11 to $74.49. The price target is $49.04.

Nio’s shares traded up about 8.6%, at $52.92 in a 52-week range of $2.11 to $57.20, well above its consensus price target of $40.74.

Anna Anagnostopulu
dzisiaj 15:15 98
Oficjalna dystrybucja Tesli ruszyła w Polsce w lipcu 2020 roku.

Cicha, bezemisyjna jazda, wysoki standard i niskie koszty eksploatacji. Z drugiej strony - niewielkie zasięgi i mała dostępność stacji ładowania.

Warta więcej niż VW, GM i Toyota razem wzięte, wzrasta szybciej niż Bitcoin.

Tesla Stock Forecasts Keep Hitting Highs As Wall Street Struggles To See Ceiling
FacebookTwitterLinkedInShare Licensing
ADELIA CELLINI LINECKER04:03 PM ET 01/20/2021
Tesla's (TSLA) latest price target hike marks another new high on Wall Street as analysts continue to upgrade their forecasts. Tesla stock edged higher.

Oppenheimer analyst Colin Rusch more than doubled his price target on Tesla stock to 1,036, citing its leadership in self-driving technology, improving China sales and production cost cuts.

That follows a recent string of new highs among Wall Street analysts. On Jan. 14, Wedbush's Dan Ives raised his price target to 950.

On Jan. 6, Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas lifted his estimate to 810. And on Dec. 3, Goldman Sachs' Mark Delaney upgraded his rating on Tesla stock to buy from neutral and raised his 12-month target to 780.

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer's Rusch said Wednesday that he is bullish about Tesla's autonomous-driving technology even though he has some doubts.

"While we continue to have misgivings about risks related to TSLA not incorporating lidar into its vehicles yet, we believe the learning cycles enabled by having over 1M vehicles on the road is an extraordinary advantage," he wrote in a note to clients.

He added: "We are looking for evidence that the new self-driving system "is effectively documenting and navigating a wide range of corner cases and allowing for incremental rollout of FSD in urban, non-highway areas, which we see as a litmus test of the technology for widespread adoption."

Rusch also says Tesla's efforts in simplifying manufacturing "have seen significant success and will continue, especially with volumes scaling, and that mix should be a tailwind given higher level of Model S/X and China based sales."

He added that his higher price target also reflects Tesla's record-breaking deliveries in Q4.

"We believe the company's execution on Model 3 and Y volumes in the medium-term and cost reduction, largely from a battery perspective, are critical to realizing positive incremental operating margin and cash flow necessary to support sustainable profitability," Rusch said.

Tesla reports Q4 earnings next week. Analysts expect EPS to more than double to 85 cents on revenue of $10 billion, a 35% jump.

IBD Live: A New Tool For Daily Stock Market Analysis

Tesla Stock
Shares rose 0.7% to 850.5- on the stock market today. On Jan. 8, Tesla stock hit an intraday high of 884.49 and has shown signs of a climax run, which usually offers a series of warning signs that it might be due for a big pullback. But while shares took a breather on Jan. 11, they've since regained those losses, according to MarketSmith chart analysis.

That doesn't mean a climax run is over. A top may still be forming. Shares are well extended past a 466 buy point. Tesla stock, which is also on the Leaderboard list, has an EPS Rating of 76.

Among other automakers, General Motors (GM) was up 1.9%. GM is making a big push into EVs with major investments and several product announcements recently. Tesla's China-based rivals Nio (NIO) was down 1.25%, Li Auto (LI) dipped 0.25% and Xpeng (XPEV) slipped 0.1%.

Is Tesla in Trouble After Mixed Q4 Results?

Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) reported its most recent quarterly results after the closing bell on Wednesday. The electric vehicle (EV) giant said that it had $0.80 in earnings per share (EPS) and $10.74 billion in revenue, compared with consensus estimates that called for $1.01 in EPS and $10.32 billion in revenue. The fourth quarter from last year had $0.41 in EPS and $7.38 billion in revenue.

Revenues increased 22.5% a quarter over quarter basis, and 46% on a year over year basis. The reason for this substantial growth was from vehicle deliveries as well as growth in other parts of the business. Also, vehicle average selling price (ASP) declined by 11% compared to the same period last year as Tesla’s product mix continues to shift from Model S and Model X to the more affordable Model 3 and Model Y.

In the fourth quarter, operating income increased to $575 million, resulting in a 5.4% operating margin.

For the quarter, automotive sales increased 46% year over year to $9.31 billion, with a gross margin of 24.1%. Total deliveries came in at 180,667 for the quarter and 499,550 for the full year.

Separately, the company reported solar deployment of 86 MW and storage deployment of 1,584 MWh, year over year increases of 59% and 199%, respectively.

On the books, Tesla reported cash and cash equivalents of $19.38 billion at the end of the fourth quarter, versus $6.27 billion at the end of the previous year.

Shares of Tesla closed Wednesday at $864.16, in a 52-week range of $70.10 to $900.40. The consensus price target is $553.28. Following the announcement, the stock was down 4% at $829.38 in the after-hours trading session.
