Is Intel Stock A Buy In 2022?
...
Bottom Line
Intel seems to be getting traction in the new year, with its stock rallying about 8%. But this doesn’t mean that the company has suddenly become a better pick in the semiconductor industry, where other high-growth players offer a much better chance of capital appreciation. We continue to recommend a wait-and-see approach when it comes to buying Intel stock.

Intel orders ASML machine still on drawing board as chipmakers look for an edge

By Toby Sterling AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – Intel has placed the first order with ASML for an advanced chipmaking machine that is still on the drawing board and won’t be delivered for years, as semiconductor manufacturers look to get ahead in a booming industry.

Alongside better-than-expected fourth quarter earnings, ASML said on Wednesday it had now received orders for five of its next generation of lithography machines, plus an order for the even newer model that is still being designed.

In a separate joint press release, the companies said Intel was the buyer.

ASML’s most advanced commercial machines, known as EUV lithography systems because of the “Extreme Ultraviolet” light waves they use to map out the circuitry of computer chips, are the size of a bus and cost around $150 million each.

A cutting-edge chip plant needs 9-18 of them, making them one of chipmakers’ biggest capital expenditure costs.

ASML is the only maker of such machines and its EUV customers include the world’s biggest chipmakers, TSMC of Taiwan, Samsung of South Korea and Intel, among others.

ASML said it had now received orders for five of the next iteration of the system, known as “High NA” EUV machines, which will have a different lens system with a higher numerical aperture, will be even larger and cost around $300 million each.

The first prototypes are to be shipped in 2023. They are not expected to be used in volume manufacturing until 2025.

Intel, which is trying to win back its position as maker of the smallest and fastest chips from current leader TSMC, had previously identified itself as the first buyer of a High NA machine, ASML’s EXE:5000, which is expected to help manufacturers shrink chip sizes later this decade.

Intel said on Wednesday it would buy the first EXE:5200 as well, which is expected to make several improvements including higher productivity. Neither company mentioned the price tag.

- Unijna ustawa o chipach umożliwi prywatnym firmom i rządom współpracę, aby radykalnie poprawić pozycję Europy w sektorze półprzewodników.

Intel planuje początkowo zainwestować 17 mld euro, tworząc w trakcie budowy 7 tys. miejsc pracy w branży budowlanej, 3 tys. stałych miejsc pracy w branży high-tech w firmie Intel oraz dziesiątki tysięcy dodatkowych u dostawców i partnerów.

Intel Yielding Nearly 6%: A Potential Generational Buying Opportunity

Summary
Like most chip stocks, Intel shares have been in a major downtrend.
Intel shares now yield nearly 6%, and the stock could be offering a generational buying opportunity.
Intel management and the turnaround have not proven themselves yet, but the upside reward appears to greatly outweigh the potential downside.
I think the only way to invest in Intel is to buy in stages, and let the dividend help to reduce your cost basis over time.

On Tuesday, Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) held its official launch event for its highly anticipated and much delayed 4th gen Xeon Scalable processors, also known as Sapphire Rapids.

The company revealed various vital updates, and while analysts at BofA, Wells Fargo, and Stifel were positive in their notes reacting to the launch, they also provided a somewhat underwhelmed tone.

Wells Fargo analysts, who have an Equal Weight rating and $32 price target on the stock, said there were "no big surprises."

"Sapphire Rapids features 8x DDR5 memory channels (same number of channels w/ prior-gen Ice Lake Xeon-SP). This compares to AMD's Zen-4 5nm Genoa EPYC server CPUs moving to support 12x DDR5 memory channels. However, Intel's Max Series SKUs feature up to 64GB of on-board HBM2e for memory intensive workloads; likely to be positioned against AMD's forthcoming Genoa-X (3D V-Cache) higher-performance next-gen CPUs to launch in 2023," explained the analysts.

Meanwhile, BofA analysts declared that while the new servers are better, they are "insufficient to reverse share shifts." They maintained an Underperform rating and a $28 price target on the stock.

"Importantly, Sapphire Rapids excels in single-threaded performance and in certain AI/security applications, but AMD's Genoa continues to offer better price-to-performance," said the analysts. "Though a big step forward, we think Sapphire Rapids is likely insufficient to reverse the current share loss dynamic, and we anticipate INTC server share loss to continue through CY23/24 for another 1-2 cycles."

Stifel analysts maintained a Hold rating and a $28 price target on Intel. They told investors in their note that "while INTC appears positioned to regain some momentum in high-growth workloads, share losses remain likely in broader workload areas this year."

Intel's 'historic collapse' erases $8 billion from market value

Reuters) - Intel Corp (NASDAQ:INTC) saw about $8 billion wiped off its market value on Friday after the U.S. chipmaker stumped Wall Street with dismal earnings projections, fanning fears around a slump in the personal-computer market.

The company predicted a surprise loss for the first quarter and its revenue forecast was $3 billion below estimates as it also struggled with slowing growth in the data center business.

Intel shares closed 6.4% lower, while rival Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) ended the session up 0.3% and 2.8%, respectively. Intel supplier KLA Corp settled 6.9% lower after its dismal forecast.

Obrazek
"No words can portray or explain the historic collapse of Intel," said Rosenblatt Securities' Hans Mosesmann, who was among the 21 analysts to cut their price targets on the stock.

Graphic 1: Intel predicts its worst quarter since dot-com bubble after disaster quarter Intel predicts its worst quarter since dot-com bubble after disaster quarter, https://www.reuters.com/graphics/INTEL- ... /chart.png

The poor outlook underscored the challenges facing Chief Executive Pat Gelsinger as he tries to reestablish Intel's dominance of the sector by expanding contract manufacturing and building new factories in the United States and Europe.

The company has been steadily losing market share to rivals like AMD, which has used contract chipmakers such as Taiwan-based TSMC to make chips that outpace Intel's technology.

"AMD's Genoa and Bergamo (data center) chips have a strong price-performance advantage compared to Intel's Sapphire Rapids processors, which should drive further AMD share gains," said Matt Wegner, analyst at YipitData.

Graphic 2: AMD set to overtake Intel in market cap, again AMD set to overtake Intel in market cap, again, https://www.reuters.com/graphics/INTEL- ... el-AMD.jpg

Analysts said that puts Intel at a disadvantage even when the data center market bottoms out, expected in the second half of 2022, as the company would have lost even more share by then.

"It is now clear why Intel needs to cut so much cost as the company's original plans prove to be fantasy," brokerage Bernstein said.

"The magnitude of the deterioration is stunning, and brings potential concern to the company's cash position over time."

Intel, which plans to cut $3 billion in costs this year, generated $7.7 billion in cash from operations in the fourth quarter and paid dividends of $1.5 billion.

With capital expenditure estimated to be around $20 billion in 2023, analysts said the company should consider cutting its dividend.
