Nippon Steel Logs 507-B.-Yen Net Profit for April-Dec.
Tokyo, Feb. 3 (Jiji Press)--Nippon Steel Corp. <5401> on Thursday reported a consolidated net profit of 507,894 million yen for April-December last year, against a net loss of 123,800 million yen a year earlier.
It is the first time in three years for the major Japanese steelmaker to produce a net profit in the first three quarters of a fiscal year.

LONDON – Nippon Steel, the world’s second-largest steelmaker, has recently purchased a liquefied natural gas shipment at the highest price ever paid in Japan amid growing fears of disruptions of LNG supplies from Russia.

Nippon bought an LNG cargo for delivery in September at a price of $41 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), most likely supplied by a major trading house, two trading sources said, without giving further details.

“Based on a standard LNGC (liquefied natural gas carrier) sized vessel, the cargo would cost between $132 million and $135 million depending on load tolerance,” one of the sources said. This would mark it as the most expensive LNG cargo ever purchased by the country.

Nippon Steel, the nation’s top steelmaker, did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside of business hours.

Resource-poor Japan faces a historic energy security risk as tensions with Moscow intensify, heightening the threat of gas supply disruptions at a time when global supply is tight and spot prices are sky-high.

Competition to secure LNG cargoes has intensified since Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a special military operation. Europe is buying massive amounts of LNG, further increasing market tightness and elevating prices.

Japan, a top LNG importer, relies mainly on long-term LNG contracts, which are usually much cheaper, but utilities have been forced into the spot market over the past few months to meet summer cooling demand amid above-average summer temperatures and concerns over Russian supply.

Russia has recently seized full control of the Sakhalin-2 gas and oil project in its Far East, in which Shell and Japanese investors hold just under 50%, heightening the threat of gas supply disruptions to Japan.

2 Major Japanese Steelmakers Enjoy Net Profit Surges
Tokyo, Aug. 4 (Jiji Press)--Two major Japanese steelmakers enjoyed sharp year-on-year growth in their group net profits in April-June, according to their earnings reports released by Thursday.
Nippon Steel Corp. <5401> and JFE Holdings Inc. <5411> improved profitability on steel price hikes against a backdrop of rising markets for iron ore, coking coal and other commodities. Appraisal gains on raw materials they hold as inventories also increased.

Nippon Steel Failed to Report Cyanide Water Leaks
Chiba, Aug. 19 (Jiji Press)--Nippon Steel Corp. <5401> has said that it failed to properly report leaks of water containing highly toxic cyanide from a key plant in eastern Japan on 39 occasions from February 2019.
The leaks of the water from the Kimitsu district of the company's East Nippon Works in the city of Kimitsu, Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo, were first disclosed in June this year.

Toyota, Nippon Steel Agree on Big Steel Price Hike
Nagoya, Sept. 1 (Jiji Press)--Toyota Motor Corp. <7203> has reached an agreement with Nippon Steel Corp. <5401> to drastically raise steel procurement prices, it was learned Thursday.
The prices of steel materials supplied to affiliated automotive parts makers via Toyota in the second half of fiscal 2022 from October will increase by around 40,000 yen per ton from the first half from April.

Nippon Steel to Invest in Major Canadian Resources Company
Tokyo, Feb. 22 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Nippon Steel Corp. <5401> said it will invest 1.15 billion Canadian dollars to acquire a 10 pct equity stake in Elk Valley Resources Ltd., a steelmaking coal company to be set up in Vancouver as a spinoff by major Canadian miner Teck Resources Ltd.
It will be Nippon Steel's largest investment ever in steelmaking coal interests.
