McDonald’s Stock: Great Entry Point as Shares Stall

McDonald's (NYSE:MCD) stock has really run out of steam in recent months, amid renewed concerns over the Delta variant of COVID-19. Undoubtedly, many restaurants have seen their reopening plans derailed.

As the spread worsens over the coming weeks, a number of McDonald's franchisees can be expected to roll back their recent reopening of dining rooms. (See MCD stock charts on TipRanks)

Despite this, I am bullish on the stock. Here's why.

Delta Takes Bite out of Fast-Food Recovery

Indeed, after making several steps forward through the year, many fast-food chains are starting to lose their stride. Regardless, I think high-quality fast-food stocks like McDonald's represent impeccable value here in a borderline expensive market.

Looking a month or two down the road, COVID-19 cases are likely to go on a steep downtrend again. From there, you can expect McDonald's will be in a spot to pick up where it left off for the next leg of reopening.

When it comes to high-quality fast-food firms, it's nearly impossible to top McDonald's under the leadership of its CEO, Chris Kempczinski, who's done a marvelous job of steering McDonald's through one of the worst crises in its history.

McDonald's is the king of the fast-food world, and Kempczinski has really delivered over a tough past year and a half. Despite dining room closures, the company has done an exceptional job of weathering the storm across its drive-thru, delivery and digital businesses. Few restaurant firms can execute so effectively across each of the so-called "three Ds" better than McDonald's.

As dining rooms, the "fourth D," stand to go offline in select markets, investors should expect more continued resilience, as the three Ds that do stay online step up to offset any renewed sales weakness.

Celebrity Collabs Power McDonald's to Q2 Beat

In July 28, McDonald's knocked one out of the ballpark, with a strong Q2 earnings report. Adjusted earnings came in at $2.37 per share, beating expectations calling for $2.11 per share.

The quarter was undoubtedly stacked up against favorable numbers, on a year-over-year basis. That said, investors shouldn't ignore the blockbuster sensation that was the BTS Meal, which was released in collaboration with the South Korean boy band BTS.

The BTS Meal, which topped the fast-food chain's previous Travis Scott collaboration, helped fuel McDonald's above expectations. Moving ahead, such "famous order" celebrity meals are likely to continue moving the needle for the company, even as the tides turn against it. Next up to the plate? The Saweetie Meal.

Wall Street's Take

According to TipRanks’ consensus analyst rating, MCD stock comes in as a Strong Buy. Out of 24 analyst ratings, there are 21 Buys and three Holds.

The average MCD price target is $267.91. Analyst price targets range from a low of $232 per share, to a high of $295 per share.

Supersized Returns Ahead?

Wall Street is standing by McDonald's stock.

It's a great defensive company, with a lot going for it over the coming months.

Investors are going to want to look past near-term reopening setbacks if they want a shot at supersized gains, as McDonald's continues to perform despite less-than-ideal circumstances.

Disclosure: At the time of publication, Joey Frenette held a position in McDonald's stock.

McDonald’s Gains as Price Hikes, New Menu Drive Revenue

Investing.com – McDonald’s stock (NYSE:MCD) rose nearly 3% Wednesday as the burger chain rode price hikes and new menu items to take its third-quarter sales and profits past analysts’ estimates.

The stock also got a boost from a 7% increase in quarterly cash dividend to $1.38 per share and a resumption of the share repurchase program.

McDonald’s is among thousands of companies forced to hike prices because of rising prices for farm and non-farm commodities, crude and metals. An increase in wages is also adding to costs.

Consumer excitement for its newly-launched Crispy Chicken Sandwich as well as its ‘Famous Orders’ campaign with South Korean boy band BTS and rapper Saweetie kept staff busy at its outlets, reopening at full capacity after a pandemic-induced hiatus.

Comparable sales for McDonald's in the U.S. rose close to 10%, higher than expected. The company attributed this partly to higher menu prices and customers buying more items per order.

Sales through digital channels grew too, benefiting from the launch of the company's first loyalty program — MyMcDonald’s Rewards.

Consolidated revenue rose 14% to $6.20 billion. Net income rose 22% to $2.15 billion, boosted by $106 million of gains related to the sale of McDonald's Japan stock.

McDonald's sales soar on higher U.S. prices, newer menu items

(Reuters) -Higher U.S. prices and celebrity-themed meals boosted quarterly comparable sales at McDonald's Corp (NYSE:MCD), though the company struggled to keep restaurants open at full capacity amid labor shortages and COVID-19 outbreaks, it reported on Wednesday.

U.S. same-store sales grew 9.6% in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with estimates for 8.27%, according to Refinitiv IBES data.

Global comparable sales also jumped 12.7% in the quarter versus estimates of 10.31% as international markets slowly recovered from the pandemic.

Shares in the world's largest burger chain rose about 2.2% to $241.70 in late morning trading.

The U.S. labor shortage caused some locations to close early and lose speed of service, Chief Executive Chris Kempczinski said in an earnings call, adding problems were not "unsolvable."

McDonald's has had to push back some new restaurant openings into early 2022 in part because global supply-chain problems made it difficult to get kitchen and tech equipment. That caused new unit development in the United States and some international markets to be "down a little bit" from how many the company had expected to open this year, Kempczinski said.

Seating areas remained closed in about 20% of McDonald's American locations - roughly 3,000 restaurants - in regions with high rates of COVID-19.

Even so, some pandemic-related restrictions have eased, luring more customers into restaurants. McDonald's crispy chicken sandwich and latest celebrity partnership with rapper Saweetie also boosted sales.

The Chicago-based company has also raised U.S. prices about 6% versus 2020 to help cover rising commodity and labor costs. Higher prices, combined with larger order sizes, drove sales.

Most restaurant chains, including Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG), are charging more on menus to protect their margins against higher costs for everything from payroll to beef and chicken.

McDonald's forecast current-quarter U.S. comparable sales to post low double-digit growth on a two-year basis.

The fast-food chain, which has been seeking to grow sales digitally, launched a new loyalty program in the United States that now has over 21 million members enrolled, while also doubling down on advertising.

Most of the company's international markets also returned to sales growth, especially the UK, Canada and Japan, as coronavirus-related restrictions eased, while Australia and China sales continued to be pressured by the resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

Kempczinski said IBM (NYSE:IBM) Corp will acquire McD Tech Labs, which was created after McDonald’s 2019 acquisition of Apprente, an artificial intelligence company working on automating drive-thru orders.

Net income rose 22% to $2.15 billion and the company earned $2.76 per share on an adjusted basis, beating estimates of $2.46 per share.

Zamówił 3200 kanapek w McDonald's. Pracownicy go znienawidzili

1600 kanapek McChicken, 1600 McDouble'i i 3200 ciastek. W jednej z restauracji McDonalds klient złożył prawdopodobnie jedno z największych zamówień w historii. Kto potrzebował tyle jedzenia z fast foodu?

...
Kto i dlaczego zamówił tyle niezdrowego jedzenia?

Druga zmiana w menu, którą ogłosił w środę McDonald's, to powrót do oferty burgerów z linii Maestro.

Amerykański fastfoodowy gigant wprowadził też jeszcze jedną nowość: chrupiące i lekko pikantne ziemniaki z pieprzem.

Burger King's New Sandwich May Look Familiar to McDonald's Fans

Playing follow the leader lets you make moves that make sense from a business perspective, but seem a little suspicious. Dunkin' (DNKN) - Get Dunkin' Brands Group, Inc. Report, for example, just seems to wait to see what works at Starbucks (SBUX) - Get Starbucks Corporation Report before offering its variation of that success.

The second-tier coffee chain recently (Feb. 2021) added cold foam to its menu, touting it in a cringe-inducing press release that made it seem like the company invented something that Starbucks debuted in 2014.

"Dunkin' is going bold on cold to take its premium Cold Brew to new heights. The brand is introducing Sweet Cold Foam for Cold Brew, debuting with the new Cold Brew with Sweet Cold Foam and Chocolate Stout Flavored Cold Brew with Sweet Cold Foam," it said in a press release.

That's a bold play for a copycat product, but that has been the Dunkin' way and, it's a classic follow-the-leader strategy. Restaurants Brands International's (QSR) - Get Restaurant Brands International Inc Report Burger King hasn't always used those tactics -- it has been an innovator at times -- but it followed McDonald's (MCD) - Get McDonald's Corporation Report lead when it came to its chicken nuggets, its fish sandwich, and the general concept of breakfast sandwiches (though the Croissan'Wich at least varied up the genre a bit).

Now, Burger King has brought back a product that's not shy in its reverence for a classic McDonald's burger.

No, Really, It's Not a Big Mac
When your rival has a signature sandwich called the Big Mac and you come out with a sandwich called the Big King, you're not being subtle. Burger King's variant has roughly the same ingredients as the McDonald's sandwich that's so famous it has a song that's highly recognizable which lists its ingredients.

That jingle, "two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun," first aired in 1975.

Burger King's Big King lacks a song, but it features "two flame-grilled beef patties, King Sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and a sesame seed bun."

That's the same recipe, as both King Sauce and special sauce are variants on Thousand Island dressing. Burger King does offer "flame-broiled" burgers, while McDonald's cooks its patties on a grill. That's a difference that might matter to diehard fans of the number-two burger chain.

The biggest difference between the Big King and the Big Mac appears to be that the Burger King Sandwich comes in at 1,009 calories while McDonald's signature burger "only" has 550.

Burger King is not being shy here. The Big King is either a blatant copy or a bold challenge to its well-established rival, depending upon your perspective.

Burger King Hasn't Always Been Number Two
The Whopper, Burger Kings' signature sandwich, actually came out in 1957, a full decade before the Big Mac. Since then, however, the Home of the Whopper has struggled with innovation which led to its ham and cheese sandwich, a suspiciously inexpensive veal parmigiana, and oddities like the Egg-Normous Buritto.

Burger King has at least brought the Big King back for sort of innovative reasons. It's using the burger to drive people to sign up for its Royal Perks loyalty rewards program. Members of that program get early access, via the company's app, before it becomes available to non-members (albeit only by a few days).

Offering a Big Mac knockoff shows a lack of innovation, but as Dunkin' has shown, embracing being number two can work. "Inventing" the Big King takes a lot less work than creating something new, and the sandwich has a built-in audience willing to sample a new take on an old classic.

McDonald's Menu: Would You Like Fries With That? (You May Be Out of Luck)
McDonald's is adjusting its menu globally after facing a shortage of one of its customers' favorite items.

Imagine your appetite being all set for your favorite McDonald's taste treat, but the counter clerk says they don't have what you want. You'll have to settle for something else.

That's what's happening at McDonald's around the world as the restaurant chain is running low on a favorite item that has forced them to remove it from the menu.

In countries like Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan and Malaysia people wanting a large order of french fries, sometimes a medium order, can't get them.

McDonald's restaurants in these countries are facing a shortage of french fries, requiring them to eliminate large and, in some cases, medium-size fries from their menus until the shortage subsides, according to the company.

McDonald's Indonesia announced on Twitter last Sunday that, due to the limited availability of french fries, large orders would be temporarily unavailable starting Feb. 2, but diners could still order medium fries.
