American Express rusza powoli
Centrum usług zatrudniające nawet 2 tys. osób miało ruszyć do końca ubiegłego roku.

Człowiek i miejsce...

How Will American Express Earnings Stand Up to COVID-19?

American Express Co. (NYSE: AXP) is scheduled to release its first-quarter earnings report before the opening bell on Friday. The consensus estimates call for $1.48 in earnings per share (EPS) and $10.71 billion in revenue. In the same period of last year, Amex said it had $2.01 in EPS and $10.49 billion in revenue.

While consumer spending may drop as a result of this COVID-19 outbreak, the need for credit cards for almost all transactions will not. This puts Amex in an almost unique position, along with Visa and Mastercard. Products like Apple Pay have had some traction, but the “Big Three” payments companies still control the market. If consumers are forced to avoid retail locations somewhat, a huge amount of spending will move online, where American Express is a staple for payment.

During the fourth quarter, consolidated total revenues net of interest expense totaled $11.4 billion, up 9% from $10.5 billion the prior year. This growth continued to be driven by a well-balanced mix of growth in fee, spend and lend revenues, consistent with the high levels of revenue growth the company had delivered for over two years.

At the same time, consolidated provisions for losses were $1 billion, up 7% from $954 million a year ago.

Excluding Thursday’s move, American Express stock had underperformed the S&P 500 and Dow Jones industrial average, with its share price down about 34% year to date. In the past 52 weeks, the stock was down closer to 27.5%.

Here’s what a few analysts had to say ahead of the report:

Morgan Stanley has an Overweight rating and a $117 price target.
Deutsche Bank has a Buy rating with a $112 target price.
Wells Fargo has an Overweight rating and a $107 price target.
CFRA has a Hold rating with a $96 target price.
JPMorgan has a Neutral rating with a $93 price target.
American Express stock traded up over 1% on Thursday to $83.74, in a 52-week range of $67.00 to $138.13. The consensus price target is $106.87.

Despite Share Gains, Why Analysts Keep Lowering Amex Targets and Estimates

Earnings season has been mixed for financial companies, but the pure-play banks with investment banking, investment management and other loan and interest exposure saw their shares sell off. It turns out that American Express Co. (NYSE: AXP) came through its earnings report, and its shares were up both on Friday and again on Monday.

The independent credit card issuer said it had $1.98 in earnings per share (EPS) and $10.31 billion in revenue, while consensus estimates were $1.43 in EPS and $10.65 billion in revenue. The same period of last year reportedly had EPS of $2.01 on $10.49 billion in revenue. American Express noted that weakness reflected softness in spending volumes beginning in the past few days of February that significantly accelerated in March as a result of COVID-19 impacts.

Wall Street analysts are continuing to lower expectations. Amex disclosed that loss provisions of $2.6 billion were up $809 million from a year ago. The increase was driven primarily by significant reserve builds of $1.7 billion, which reflect deterioration of the global estimated macroeconomic outlook due to COVID-19 impacts.

BofA Securities maintained its Neutral rating and its $104 price objective after earnings. The firm also handily brought down earnings estimates to $4.46 EPS (from $5.79 EPS) for 2020 and $6.77 EPS (from $6.48) for 2021.

CFRA maintained its Hold rating with a target price of $96, but the firm lowered its 2020 EPS estimate to $6.05 from $7.68 and its 2021 EPS expectations to $7.80 from $8.46.

Oppenheimer started Amex with an Outperform rating and a $100 price target.

Other analyst ratings were soon on American Express as well:

BMO Capital Markets maintained it as Market Perform but lowered its target price to $95 from $115
Compass Point slashed its target price to $78 from $140.
Credit Suisse maintained its Underperform rating and lowered its target to $85 from $90.
Deutsche Bank maintained its Buy rating but lowered its target from $112 to $108.
Piper Sandler lowered its target price to $106 from $119.
Susquehanna maintained it as Buy but lowered its target from $135 to $120.

Zysk American Express w dół o 85 proc.

American Express Blasts Earnings Forecasts on Post-COVID Spending Surge

"Based on current trends, we are confident in our ability to be within the high end of the range of EPS expectations we had for 2020 in 2022," said CEO Stephen Squeri.

American Express Co. (AXP) - Get Report posted stronger-than-expected second quarter earnings Friday thanks to a post-pandemic boom in consumer spending and the release of loan loss reserves.

American Express said diluted earnings for the three months ending in June were pegged at $2.80, a near ten-fold increase from the same period last year and firmly ahead of the Street consensus forecast of $1.66 per share. The bottom line was supported by a $606 million release of reserves that were previously set-aside to cover bad loans, American Express said.

Group revenues, American Express said, rose 33% to $10.24 billion, firmly beating analysts' forecasts of $9.56 billion tally as consumer credit spending surged thanks to trillions in support from the American Rescue Act as well as child tax credits and enhanced unemployment benefits.

"We saw Card Member spending accelerate from the prior quarter and exceed pre-pandemic levels in June, with the largest portion of this spending growth coming from Millennial, Gen Z, and small business customers," said CEO Stephen Squeri.

“As we look ahead, we are increasingly optimistic that the momentum we’ve generated will continue given the strength we see in our core business, particularly in the U.S., even as the pace of the recovery remains uneven in different regions around the world," he added. "Based on current trends, we are confident in our ability to be within the high end of the range of EPS expectations we had for 2020 in 2022.”

American Express shares were marked 3.4% higher in pre-market trading immediately following the earnings release to indicate an opening bell price of $176.70 each.

U.S. retail sales were unexpectedly stronger last month, suggesting job gains and rising vaccination rates offset inflation concerns in the world's biggest economy.

June retail sales rose 0.6% from last month to a collective $621.3 billion, the Commerce Department said, well ahead of the Street consensus forecast of a 0.4% decline.

Consumer price increases looked to have little impact on consumer spending, even with June inflation rising at a much-faster-than-expected 5.4% from last year, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics published last week, the fastest pace since 2008.

AmEx Global Business Travel to go public via $5.3 billion Apollo SPAC deal

(Reuters) - American Express Global Business Travel (GBT) said on Friday it would merge with a blank-check firm backed by Apollo Global Management (NYSE:APO) Inc to go public in a deal valued at around $5.3 billion.

The deal with Apollo Strategic Growth Capital (ASGC) will deliver gross proceeds of up to $1.2 billion, including a $335 million private investment in public equity, or PIPE.

Investors in the PIPE included investment manager Ares Management (NYSE:ARES) Corp, travel technology company Sabre (NASDAQ:SABR) Corp and Zoom Video Communications (NASDAQ:ZM) Inc.

The merger comes at a time when business travel is recovering from a pandemic-induced slump, in a boost for companies like AmEx GBT that help corporate employees with their travel arrangements.

AmEx GBT was a wholly-owned unit of American Express Co (NYSE:AXP) until 2014, when the payments processor sold half its stake to a consortium led by investment firm Certares LP.

Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC and the Carlyle Group (NASDAQ:CG) were looking to purchase a 20% stake in the company in late 2019 but pulled out of investment in May last year as the COVID-19 crisis dented AmEx GBT's business.

After the merger, the combined company will be renamed Global Business Travel but it will continue to do business under the AmEx GBT brand name.

The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2022, after which Global Business Travel will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "GBTG."

Special-purpose acquisition companies (SPACs), or blank-check firms, are publicly listed shell companies that raise funds with the intention of merging with a private entity, allowing firms to go public while sidestepping a traditional initial public offering.

Credit Suisse (SIX:CSGN), Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) advised GBT on the deal, while Evercore and Houlihan Lokey (NYSE:HLI) advised ASGC.
