Luxury giant LVMH says third quarter sales grew by 20%

PARIS (Reuters) -Sales at French luxury giant LVMH grew by 20% in the third quarter, fuelled by appetite for high-end fashion from consumers eager to splash out following months of pandemic lockdowns.

LVMH, which sells a range of luxury products spanning Moët & Chandon champagne and Bulgari timepieces, said on Tuesday like-for-like sales, stripping out the effect of foreign exchange fluctuations, rose to 15.51 billion euros ($17.90 billion) in the three months to September.

Growth was roughly in line with an analyst consensus forecast for a 21% rise cited by Barclays (LON:BARC), after a stellar second quarter which saw revenues surge by 84%.

Compared to 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, sales at the end of September were 11% higher, the same rate as in the first half.

LVMH's fashion and leather goods division, the group's largest business accounting for nearly half of group sales, posted 24% growth, lifted by the popularity of its star labels Louis Vuitton and Dior.

The luxury goods sector has bounced back strongly from the health crisis, even if international travel, a key growth driver in pre-pandemic times, has not fully resumed, with spending from Chinese shoppers, for example, now taking place on a local level.

"Within the context of a gradual exit from the health crisis, the group is confident in the continuation of the current growth," LVMH said in a statement.

LVMH (PA:LVMH) stock rose 1.6% after the French luxury goods maker reported robust demand for Louis Vuitton and Dior products, helping boost first quarter sales.

PARIS (Reuters) – Strong demand for Louis Vuitton and Dior products helped lift first quarter sales at the world’s largest luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, showing the sector’s resilience despite geopolitical tensions and volatile stock markets.

PARIS (Reuters) -Robust demand for Louis Vuitton and Dior products boosted first-quarter sales at the world’s largest luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, kicking off earnings season for the industry with a show of resilience despite geopolitical tensions, COVID-19 lockdowns in China and volatile stock markets.

High-end fashion brands drove a 30% rise in sales of its largest division, fashion and leather goods, on a like-for-like basis, beating analyst expectations of 17%, according to consensus estimates cited by RBC.

“The year starts on a high note,” said Luca Solca of Bernstein, citing “another material beat” of consensus expectations, particularly the fashion and leather goods activity.

Dior and Celine grew faster than other labels, while Louis Vuitton “is never very far from the average for the division,” LVMH Chief Financial Officer Jean-Jacques Guiony told analysts in a call.

The group will continue to raise prices at its fashion labels – but reasonably – to reflect the cost of business, said the executive.

Luxury industry prices have increased over the last six months by around 8 percent since September last year, with hikes in the range of 20%-23% at Louis Vuitton and Tiffany, according to recent estimates from HSBC.

Watches and jewellery labels also performed strongly, with sales for the high end products up 19%, boosted by Tiffany, particularly in the United States. The American luxury brand is undergoing a renewal drive led by its new French owner targeting younger audiences, with marketing campaigns featuring K-pop star Rose wearing chunky gold jewellery.

Traffic in Sephora stores in the U.S. and France helped push up sales at the selective retail division, which clocked 24% organic sales growth. But the luxury group’s DFS travel retail business continued to suffer from travel restrictions in Asia, including Hong Kong where tourists have not yet returned.

Turnaround efforts at DFS could help it break even this year, predicted Guiony.

The executive sought to reassure investors concerned about disruptions in China from restrictions aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus, although he cautioned that in addition to lockdowns in Shanghai and Shenzhen, traffic is down in cities that are not affected by such measures, with people travelling less.

“Obviously this is an impact – it’s a fairly recent impact so you don’t see it in the numbers,” he said, noting that the effects seen in April so far are similar to the second half of March. Drawing on experience from previous lockdowns in China, the executive predicted that demand would return quickly once restrictions ease.

“It is probably worth looking beyond 2Q China disruption,” said Citi, which plans to retain a buy rating on shares. Overall sales at LVMH rose by 23% on a like-for-like basis, which strips out the effect of currency changes, in the three months to March to 18 billion euros, beating a consensus estimate for 18% growth, cited by Jefferies.

Hermes reports first-quarter sales on April 14 and Kering on April 21.

Investing.com -- LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (EPA:LVMH) has posted better-than-expected second quarter revenues, thanks in part to a sharp uptick in demand in the U.S. and Europe that helped offset COVID-linked weakness in China.

The luxury group, which includes a wide range of high-end brands like Dom Pérignon and Bulgari, reported a 19% rise in organic revenue to €18.73B during the period. Analysts had predicted sales to come in at €17.59B.

LVMH said it was boosted by solid demand in Europe and U.S. for fashion and leather goods, in particular. However, Asia saw a slowdown in sales growth due mainly to COVID lockdowns in China weighing on customer activity.

The company's wine and spirits business also saw quarterly sales jump by 30%, as price increases and recovery in deliveries in the U.S. outweighed supply chain constraints. Selective retailing was given a lift as well from strong performance at LVMH's Sephora business.

Shares in LVMH increased marginally in early European trading on Wednesday.

Looking ahead, LVMH chairman and chief executive Bernard Arnault said the firm will approach the second half with confidence, but warned of headwinds stemming from geopolitical and global health risks.

PARIS (Reuters) - Shares in luxury goods companies rose on Wednesday, as LVMH set an upbeat tone with robust third-quarter sales, showing that shoppers have not lost their appetite for high-end designer fashions in the face of a gloomy economic backdrop.

The world's biggest luxury group brushed off concerns that the industry's post-pandemic boom could be cooling, with forecast-beating third quarter sales growth, as free-spending Americans took advantage of the dollar's strength in Europe and business began to improve in China.

"LVMH's 3Q22 print will likely reassure on the health of the high-end consumer in the run-up to the festive season," said Thomas Chauvet of Citi.

Analysts have worried the luxury sector could be hit by deteriorating macroeconomic conditions over the fourth quarter and into next year, but LVMH executives gave an upbeat assessment of the resilience of its affluent client base.

“Luxury is not a proxy for the general economy,” LVMH chief financial officer Jean Jacques Guiony told analysts in a conference call on Tuesday after the sales figures were published.

He said he had seen no signs that lower product categories were underperforming -- a category that has been closely eyed for signs of weakness.

Analysts have been on the look out for signs of weakness in more aspirational products as younger shoppers face rising living costs.

Guiony flagged a strong performance in watches -- luxury products that tend to do well in an inflationary environment because they hold their value. And he also noted a shift in purchases to gold jewelry, from silver, at Tiffany & Co (NYSE:TIF).

LVMH shares were up 1.4% early on Wednesday, Richemont shares traded up 0.6% and Hermes shares were up 1.4%.

Hermes and Kering (EPA:PRTP) report third quarter sales on Oct. 20.
