MOSCOW--Japanese car maker Toyota Motor Corp.’s St Petersburg plant may be transferred to the Russian state entity NAMI, Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said on Thursday, according to the state-run TASS news agency.

“The transfer of Toyota’s Russian asets to NAMI is being considered,” Manturov was quoted as saying on the sidelines of a business congress.

NAMI, Russia’s Central Automobile and Engine Research and Development Institute, has already snapped up plants from Renault and Nissan.

A spokesperson for Toyota said on Friday it was considering what to do regarding the plant, after having already decided last year to end vehicle production in Russia after suspending production in St Petersburg last March.

“While it’s true that we’re considering various options, nothing has been decided at this point,” the spokesperson said.

Toyota said in September it had decided to stop vehicle production in Russia due to the interruption in supplies of key materials and parts.

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia and Toyota said on Friday that the Japanese carmaker's factory in St Petersburg had been handed over to state entity NAMI, with Moscow snapping up more assets from global automakers leaving Russia over the conflict in Ukraine.

"Toyota's production site in St Petersburg has... been transferred to the state," Russia's Ministry of Industry and Trade said in a statement.

The company said in September it had decided to stop vehicle production in Russia due to the interruption in supplies of key materials and parts.

"Toyota confirms that it has concluded the transfer of its vehicle production plant to NAMI effective from March 31, 2023," Toyota said in a statement. "The agreement includes the full transfer of ownership of the plant buildings and land."

Neither party disclosed a fee for the transaction, and Toyota declined to give any further details of the deal.

The company produced the Camry and RAV4 models at the factory, which had been in operation since 2005, a company spokesperson said. Just over 80,000 vehicles were manufactured at the plant in 2021.

The Russian ministry said it was working on resuming production at the facility as soon as possible.

NAMI, Russia's Central Automobile and Engine Research and Development Institute, has already taken plants from Renault (EPA:RENA) and Nissan (OTC:NSANY).

France's Renault sold its majority stake in Russia's Avtovaz for reportedly just one rouble, but with a six-year option to buy it back. NAMI paid one euro for Nissan's assets.

Toyota suspends sales of Yaris model in Thailand after safety test problem

BANGKOK/TOKYO (Reuters) -Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM) Corp has stopped sales and deliveries of its Yaris Ativ in Thailand, senior officials said on Monday, after its affiliate Daihatsu rigged part of the door in side-collision safety tests.

The problem may have occurred due to pressure on Daihatsu to shorten the development time of the Ativ, Masahiko Maeda, Toyota's CEO for the Asia region, said at a press conference in Bangkok. The vehicles customers were currently using were safe, he added.

Toyota was working with the Thai government to resume sales of the model, which has been produced in Toyota's Gateway plant in Chachoengsao province, and further investigation was underway.

"If development had been carried out under appropriate conditions, this kind of problem would of course not have happened," Maeda said.

"I think the fact that it still happened, means there was some kind of pressure at the development site," he said, adding that the vehicle's relatively large size may have posed a challenge to Daihatsu, which specialises in the production of small cars.

Toyota and Daihatsu disclosed last month they were investigating how part of the door in side-collision safety tests carried out for some 88,000 small cars had been changed for the purpose of side-on crash safety testing.

Daihatsu has said that some 76,000 of those vehicles were Yaris Ativs mainly bound for Thailand, Mexico and the Gulf Cooperation Council. The Gulf Cooperation Council comprises Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.

Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda said he had visited the Gateway plant for the first time in a decade to assure workers, also saying he had come to the Southeast Asian nation because he loved it.

Toyoda has a personal attachment to Thailand, calling it his "home away from home" at an event to celebrate Toyota's 60th anniversary of operations in the country late last year.

He has said that late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej was the only global leader who expressed his confidence in the company after a string of massive recalls prompted U.S. investigations and forced him to testify before Congress in 2010.

Toyota President Koji Sato, who took over the top job from Toyoda on April 1, was not at the press conference.

For Daihatsu, which became a wholly owned Toyota subsidiary in 2016 when Toyoda was president, Southeast Asia is an important market, with production facilities in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Tokyo, May 10 (Jiji Press)--Toyota Motor Corp. on Wednesday said its group net profit fell 14.0 pct in the year ended in March from the previous year to 2,451.3 billion yen, the first drop in four years, mainly due to surging material prices.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Daimler Truck Holding AG and Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM) Corp have struck a preliminary deal to combine their truck units in Japan, the companies said on Tuesday.

Under the memorandum of understanding (MOU), the businesses of Daimler-owned Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp and Toyota subsidiary Hino Motors Ltd would be combined under a holding company, they said in a statement.

The shares of the new company are expected to be listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's prime market.

The companies see the tie-up as an opportunity to achieve the scale they need to make technological advances, Daimler Truck CEO Martin Daum told a press conference in Tokyo.

"We are accelerating towards zero emissions, but there is one major challenge and this is the required funding," Daum said. "There is only one way to make this parallel tech development work: economies of scale."

The sales organisation globally will remain separate, but the two companies will pursue joint development, procurement and production, he said.

Daimler Truck and Toyota will invest in the company equally and cooperate on the development of hydrogen and other technologies in areas such as connectivity and autonomous driving, their statement said.

Hydrogen would be the "future" of automotive mobility, as it was the solution to carbon neutrality, Daum added.

The companies expect to sign a definitive agreement in the first quarter of 2024 and close the transaction by the end of next year, they said.

Last year a committee tasked with investigating an emissions scandal at Hino, which became a Toyota subsidiary in 2001, found that the truck and bus maker had falsified engine emissions data going back to 2003.

Four Hino executives, including those overseeing production and compliance, stepped down over the scandal last October. President Satoshi Ogiso, who remains in his post, returned half his monthly compensation for six months.
