Toyota's global sales rise 5.1% to 4.9 million in first half of 2023

TOKYO (Reuters) -Japanese automaker Toyota Motor (TYO:7203) (NYSE:TM) said on Friday it sold 5.1% more vehicles in the first half of 2023 compared with the same period a year earlier, helped by an easing of semiconductor supply constraints and especially stronger demand in Japan.

The company sold some 4.9 million vehicles globally in the six months through June, including of its luxury Lexus brand, compared with about 4.7 million vehicles during the same period in 2022.

Toyota's sales in Japan jumped 33.2% to 878,215 units in the period versus a year earlier, while U.S. sales slipped 0.7% to just over 1 million vehicles and those in Asia declined half a percent to about 1.5 million units.

In the month of June, global sales rose 10% to 898,947 units, benefiting from growing demand, including for electrified vehicles such as hybrids, in key markets such as the United States and Europe.

China sales in June posted their first monthly decline in three months, falling 12.8% year-on-year to 174,548 vehicles. China sales were down 2.8% for January-June.

Global sales of hybrid electric vehicles grew 37.6% year-on-year to 292,131 units, accounting for just under a third of the total number of vehicles sold worldwide last month.

In June, Toyota sold 10,191 battery electric vehicles worldwide, including its Lexus brand, with about 5,000 of those sold in China. That brought the total number of battery-powered vehicles sold in the first half of 2023 to 46,171 units

Toyota to bring new hybrid Land Cruiser to North America

Japanese automaker Toyota (TYO:7203), on Wednesday, unveiled the first hybrid version of its Land Cruiser. The company aims to make a significant impact by bringing this high-margin and iconic sports utility vehicle to North America and other key markets.

Toyota said it will produce the new model of the brand that traces its roots to 1951, and a newly launched compact variant at two production facilities in Japan. From there, these vehicles will be shipped to international markets.

The new model is intended to be primarily sold as a hybrid in the United States. This strategic move will provide an opportunity for current owners of less fuel-efficient Land Cruisers to transition to cleaner, more eco-friendly cars.

According to analysts at Tokai Tokyo Research Institute, Land Cruiser models, along with certain other models like the Alphard van, are notably large vehicles that contribute significantly to Toyota's profitability.

"Land Cruisers and Alphards have a high profitability even under the Toyota brand," the analysts said, adding that will go up further if models are sold under the Lexus brand.

The new Land Cruiser will become available in Japan in the first half of 2024 and come to the United States that spring. According to Toyota, the suggested retail pricing in the United States will start in the mid-$50,000 range.

Shares of TM are up 1.82% in pre-market trading on Wednesday.

Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM) revealed Thursday that the company reached record production number in August as the automaker’s global production climbed 4% from the same period a year earlier.

Domestic production for the company increased by 22% compared to the previous year, compensating for a 2% decrease in production overseas.

Despite a malfunction that temporarily halted operations at all of its domestic assembly plants for a day last month, production was minimally affected.

Toyota recorded a remarkable 321% surge in production in India, where it is reaping the benefits of its collaboration with Suzuki, achieving a total output of slightly more than 32,000 vehicles.

Toyota also recorded a 9.8% jump in global sales for the month to 853,285 vehicles, also a record for the month.

While world's biggest automaker recorded a near 7% drop in China sales, domestic sales experienced a remarkable surge of around 46%, while sales in the United States increased by 15%.

The automaker achieved sales of 11,880 battery electric vehicles worldwide in August, pushing the cumulative number of battery EVs sold during the initial eight months of 2023 to approximately 65,000, with the vast majority of them being sold in international markets.

Shares of TM are down 0.22% in afternoon trading on Thursday.
