Air France-KLM operating loss widens as European recovery lags

PARIS (Reuters) - Air France-KLM sales are showing little sign so far of a travel upturn it still hopes to see by summer, the airline group said on Thursday, as it posted a wider first-quarter operating loss.

Air France-KLM said it expects to operate 50% of its pre-pandemic flight capacity in the second quarter under way, ramping up to 55% to 65% in July-September.

"We're waiting to see the first effects of vaccination," Chief Financial Officer Frederic Gagey said. Demand is showing "no noticeable improvement so far", he added, with customers often waiting to book at the last minute.

While rebounding U.S. and Chinese domestic markets are already benefiting airlines there, carriers in Europe are stuck waiting for the region's slower vaccine rollouts to give way to looser curbs and an anticipated recovery.

Lufthansa cut its 2021 capacity forecast last week while narrowing its first-quarter loss with a workforce reduction of 19%. British Airways parent IAG (LON:ICAG) posts quarterly earnings on Friday.

Air France-KLM's operating loss increased to 1.18 billion euros ($1.42 billion) from 815 million in the first quarter of 2020, which was only partially affected by the onset of the pandemic. Revenue fell 57% to 2.16 billion euros.

The group, which took a 10.4-billion-euro government-backed bailout last year, raised 1 billion euros in an April share issue that saw the French state double its holding to 28.6%.

Air France-KLM is seeking shareholder approval this month to raise more equity and hybrid capital, in a process its CFO said would see debt and state support "gradually transformed into market-credible products" as the outlook improves.

Gagey, 64, is due to retire at the end of June and will be replaced in the group role by current Air France finance chief Steven Zaat, the company said on Thursday.

The quarterly numbers beat the 2.07 billion in revenue and 1.31-billion-euro operating loss expected by analysts, according to the median of 12 estimates in a company poll.

The net loss narrowed to 1.48 billion euros from 1.8 billion a year earlier - which included a large fuel-hedging deficit as traffic collapsed.

Air France-KLM said net debt rose by 1.5 billion euros over the quarter to 12.5 billion at March 31, when it held 8.5 billion euros in liquidity and available credit.

On the flip side, Air France KLM stock fell 2.7% following comments from Anne Rigail,CEO of the French flag carrier, that it was only seeing a small recovery in business travel on domestic routes and adding that premium travel remained far below pre-crisis levels.

Air France-KLM considers cap hike delay as Omicron disrupts travel - sources

LONDON (Reuters) -Air France-KLM is considering delaying its planned capital increase because of tough travel restrictions imposed by governments to mitigate the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, two sources familiar with the company's plans told Reuters. The French-Dutch carrier was hoping to raise at least 1 billion euros ($1.13 billion) by the end of the year to shore up its heavily-indebted, pandemic-hit balance sheet and repay government aid, but this is now likely to be delayed, the two sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "The mathematics of it doesn't work. They need to sell a recovery story and that doesn't work with Omicron hovering," said one of the sources. Air France-KLM declined to comment. The United States, Japan, Hong Kong and a number of European countries are among those to have tightened borders and imposed new restrictions amid uncertainty around the virulence of the new variant and its ability to evade vaccine protection. Shares in travel companies around the globe have plummeted since news of the variant emerged, with British Airways-owner IAG (LON:ICAG) down almost 15% since Friday and Lufthansa and Air France-KLM down around 9%. The airline already completed a 4 billion euro recapitalisation package in April which included state support and a 1.036 billion euros rights issue that doubled the French government's stake to 30%. It had more than 10 billion euros of cash at hand at the end of September and can afford to delay the plan. Yet, it needs to reimburse state aid to lift a EU ban on merger and acquisition (M&A) deals, a source at the French government said. SOARING DEBT Air France-KLM's chief executive Ben Smith said at the end of September the company was aiming to raise new funds "as soon as possible", without providing an exact date. Government bailouts via perpetual instruments have pushed Air France's total debt to 10.2 billion euros, according to Refinitiv Eikon records, and the company has seen its borrowing costs spike over the past week. "I would not be advising them to come to market anytime soon - market conditions are not ideal for any company at the moment, let alone an unrated travel firm," said a third source, from the banking sector. Air France-KLM does not have a rating from any of the main credit ratings agencies and is therefore not eligible for European Central Bank corporate debt purchases.

KLM says it won't bring more passengers to Amsterdam Saturday

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - KLM, the Dutch arm of Air France-KLM, said it would not bring any further passengers on Saturday from European destinations to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, its main hub.

The airline, which had already cancelled dozens of flights to ease traffic pressure at the airport, said weather conditions and runway maintenance were preventing many aircraft from taking off and landing.

"This decision should make it possible for as many passengers as possible who are stuck at Schiphol to be able to leave on Saturday and for KLM to conduct as many flights as possible on Sunday," the company said in a statement.

Schiphol, Europe's third-busiest airport, has been grappling with overcrowding due to a shortage of security staff. Earlier this week, the airport agreed to increase the wages of staff over the summer period and to hire more personnel.

Investing.com -- Air France KLM SA (EPA:AIRF) reported better-than-expected profit in the fourth quarter, as higher ticket pricing led to record revenue that outweighed a spike in fuel costs.

Operating income for the three months to the end of December came in at €134 million (€1 = $1.0638), well above Bloomberg consensus estimates of €98.9M.

However, the figure dipped by 25% compared to the corresponding period in the prior year, due in large part to a more than doubling in aircraft fuel expenses to €2.06B.

To offset these cost pressures, the group instituted a number of fare hikes across all flights throughout 2022. These increases combined with passenger traffic that rose by nearly a third year-on-year to create revenue of €7.13B - Air France-KLM's highest-ever top-line result in the fourth quarter.

In a statement, Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Smith said the airline successfully captured "strong demand" for travel following the lifting of most COVID-19 restrictions around the world. Smith added that Air France-KLM has "turned the page" on the pandemic, while facing simultaneous challenges from soaring inflation, airport disruptions and the war in Ukraine. He highlighted full-year net income in particular, which returned to positive territory after a loss of €3.3B in 2021.

In 2023, Air France-KLM now expects available seat kilometers - a gauge of passenger carrying capacity - to be between 95% to 100%. Analysts at Bernstein noted that this guidance points to a "near-total restoration" of capacity after levels dropped sharply during the pandemic.

Shares in Air France-KLM jumped in early European trading on Friday.

Linia lotnicza KLM zapowiada, iż wprowadzi również korzystną zmianę w rozkładzie połączeń z Amsterdamu do Wrocławia. "Nowy codzienny lot z Amsterdamu zaplanowano na wieczór, aby podróżni mogli wylecieć wcześnie następnego dnia. Dzięki temu pasażerowie z Wrocławia uzyskają dostęp do globalnej siatki KLM z przesiadką w Amsterdamie" - podkreśla Frantisek Siling, szef działu sprzedaży Air France i KLM w Polsce cytowany w komunikacie prasowym.
