Nokia's quarterly profit beats on 5G demand, flags supply concerns

HELSINKI/STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Nokia reported a stronger-than-expected third-quarter operating profit on Thursday, with more telecom operators switching to 5G services and as the telecom equipment maker's efforts to trim costs took hold.

The company, which has been getting back on track following product missteps last year, also followed Nordic rival Ericsson (BS:ERICAs) in flagging about global semiconductor shortage starting to hit supply.

"The uncertainty around the global semiconductor market limits our visibility into Q4 and 2022," Chief Executive Officer Pekka Lundmark said in a statement.

Global producers of goods from televisions to cars have faced a host of supply chain issues ranging from a shortage of vital components, manpower, logistics snarls, and delays at plants due to power cuts in China.

"We are working closely not only with our suppliers to ensure component availability but also with our customers to ensure we can meet their needs and mitigate the unprecedented component cost inflation our industry faces," Lundmark said.

Nokia (NYSE:NOK)'s quarterly net sales rose 2% to 5.4 billion euros ($6.27 billion) from 5.3 billion a year ago, in line with analysts' expectations.

The company expects comparable operating profit margin to be towards the upper end of the target range of 10% to 12%.

Comparable operating profit during July-September surged to 633 million euros from 486 million last year, beating the 488 million euros forecast by 11 analysts polled by Refinitiv.

While its mainstay mobile network business took a hit from losing business in the United States, network infrastructure grew 6% in constant currency and cloud and network services rose 12%.

In July, Nokia won its first 5G radio contract in China, while rival Ericsson lost market share after Sweden last year decided to ban Chinese vendors from their 5G networks.

Nokia, Tele2 expand 5G partnership in the Baltics

Nokia (NYSE:NOK) has extended its partnership with Tele2 to supply 5G RAN solutions from its latest ReefShark-powered AirScale portfolio to Tele2 in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in a long-term deal.
The newly expanded deal marks twenty-five years of continuous cooperation with Tele2 in the Baltic region.
Nokia’s 5G solutions will enable Tele2 to deliver connectivity and capacity benefits at ultra-low latencies to their customers as well as reduce complexity.
Under the partnership, Nokia will provide equipment from its latest ReefShark System on Chip-powered AirScale equipment portfolio to modernize Tele2’s nationwide radio network.
The rollout will begin once Tele2 has acquired sufficient spectrum with auctions for both low and high band frequencies happening next year.
Since 1996, Nokia has partnered with Tele2 on 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G network deployments in the Baltics.

BARCELONA (Reuters) - HMD Global Oy, licensee of Nokia-brand smartphones, said on Saturday it is developing capabilities and processes this year to bring 5G device production to Europe.

Europe has no big smartphone manufacturing presence, as all the major companies, including Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Samsung (KS:005930), make their phones in Asia to cut costs.

Finland-based HMD said in a news release it was working with a number of IT security partners on software modifications and thorough testing as the first stages of manufacturing and testing smartphones in Europe.

The company did not disclose where in Europe it plans to setup its factory.

The European Union has been encouraging companies to set up production in key sectors, introducing laws and offering subsidies as the bloc did for semiconductors with the European Chips Act.

"While we can't discuss specific European subsidies, we collaborate with multiple parties in both the public and private sector in Europe to advocate for European manufacturing and R&D," HMD chief marketing officer Lars Silberbauer told Reuters.

HMD in 2016 signed an exclusive 10-year licensing agreement with Nokia Oyj (HE:NOKIA), once the world's largest phone maker, to make Nokia-branded smartphones and tablets.

Nokia (NYSE:NOK) had by that time lost the smartphone war and sold its entire handset business to Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) in 2014. It now focuses on telecoms network equipment.

HMD used Nokia's remaining phone patents and manufacturing facilities of Taiwan's Foxconn to build a new line of smartphones to compete with other budget Android phone makers.

The company also unveiled three smartphones on Saturday - the Nokia G22, Nokia C32 and Nokia C22 - with three-day battery life and said it would begin repairing mobiles in collaboration with repair firm iFixit.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Finnish telecom gear group Nokia (HE:NOKIA) reported on Friday preliminary second-quarter sales of 5.7 billion euros ($6.4 billion) and a comparable operating profit margin of 11%, and lowered its full-year outlook.

Analysts polled by Refinitiv had estimated sales of 6.0 billion on average.

Nokia said it now saw 2023 sales of 23.2-24.6 billion euros ($26.1-$27.6 billion) against 24.6-26.2 billion previously. It narrowed its comparable operating margin range outlook to 11.5-13% from 11.5-14% previously.

"The changes are related to Nokia's Network Infrastructure and Mobile Networks business groups," it said.

Nokia is scheduled to publish its full second-quarter earnings report on July 20.

Nokia (HE:NOKIA) (NYSE:NOK) today announced a major cost-cutting effort with a plan to cut as many as 14,000 jobs, or nearly 16% of it staff, as the company is battling a slump in its 5G business.

In a move that should save ~€400 million (€1 = $1.05) in 2024, and an additional €300 million in 2025, the communications giant intends to bring the headcount down to 72,000-77,000 people from the 86,000 it is employing currently.

Management did not provide specific details on who would be affected by the job cuts, but Nokia's CEO Pekka Lundmark did note that the company's focus is on protecting the Research & Development department.

Earlier today, Nokia reported Q3 results, missing on both top and bottom lines, with comparable sales drop 20%, and North American sales down 40%.

Lundmark noted that despite strong growth in India, the advancements there are "no[t] anymore able to compensate fully for what we are losing in North America" - the company's key and most profitable market.

Nokia's key competitor from Sweden, Ericsson (ST:ERICb), also posted weak results earlier this week, saying it expects the weakness to continue in the near term.

Shares of NOK are trading nearly 4% lower following the announcement
