Pernod Ricard's new profit forecast lifts shares to record high

PARIS (Reuters) -Pernod Ricard raised its annual profit forecast as the French drinks saw a stronger than expected recovery with the removal of COVID-19 curbs, driving its shares to a record high in early trading on Wednesday.

The owner of Mumm champagne, Absolut vodka and Martell cognac now expects organic profit growth of about 16% for its 2020/2021 fiscal year, up from a previous April forecast of 10%.

Pernod shares were up 2.97% at 185.30 euros at 0810 --, having hit 187.60 euros earlier -- and were one of the strongest performers on the Stoxx 600. Since the start of the year, the stock is up 18.2% versus around 13% for the Stoxx 600 Food & Beverage index.

The world's second-biggest spirits group after Britain's Diageo (LON:DGE) had already told an investor presentation on Tuesday that it was confident about its prospects in Asia, helped by cognac and Scotch whisky demand in China.

And the group's third-quarter results, published two months ago, had beaten analysts' expectations.

"The pace of recovery is proving stronger than anticipated (...) Demand is accelerating as restrictions are progressively lifted," the group said in a statement on Wednesday.

Pernod Ricard shares rise after ruling boosts profit before tax

PARIS (Reuters) - Pernod Ricard (PA:PERP) shares opened higher on Wednesday after the French spirits group said it would book an additional $163 million in income before tax in its 2021 earnings.

The world's second-biggest spirits group after Diageo (LON:DGE) said in a statement it could make a claim on spirits exported from the United States after a U.S. Appeals Court ruled in favour of the National Association of Manufacturers on tax refunding on exported goods.

It said the ruling means it can book an additional profit before tax of $163 million of which $33 million is profit from recurring operations.

That represents about 1% of organic growth, the company said.

Pernod Ricard shares were up 1.02% in early session trading.

Pernod Ricard expects sales growth to moderate after strong Q1

PARIS (Reuters) -French spirits maker Pernod Ricard (PA:PERP) said solid sales growth could moderate in the 2022 fiscal year, after strong demand in China, the United States, India and Europe helped it post above-forecast sales in the first quarter.

Pernod - which owns Martell cognac, Mumm champagne and Absolut vodka - reported a 20% rise in like-for-like sales to 2.718 billion euros ($3.17 billion) in the three months to Sept. 30, above market expectations for a 15.7% rise.

The world's second-biggest spirits group said consumption by people staying at home remained resilient, while the reopening of bars and restaurants as coronavirus restrictions eased also helped, notably in Europe.

Travel retail was still subdued although the company benefited in the quarter from a low comparison base.

Pernod Ricard's fiscal year started on July 1.

When asked if he was comfortable with average analyst expectations of 9.7% sales growth for the full year, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alexandre Ricard told Reuters "we give a qualitative guidance".

"We are confident but we need to go through Christmas and the Chinese New Year (to have more visibility)," he said.

Pernod expected "good sales growth to continue through the year", he said, adding that the first quarter had benefited from a low comparison base a year ago, when pandemic curbs had hit businesses in many countries.

That comparison base would progressively become less favourable as the year progressed, Ricard added.

"The comparison basis will get more complicated, the longer we go on."

Despite strong sales, Pernod shares were off 1.1% at 196.60 euros by 0819 GMT.

"There is no change to the outlook, and although the beat is significant, it is only one quarter so we think consensus upgrades will probably be minor at this stage," wrote Investec analysts in a note.

Credit Suisse (SIX:CSGN) analysts pointed out that "significant investment in Advertising and Promotion(A&P) and structure costs should temper margin expectations," for the year.

GOOD MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL IN CHINA

The strong start to the year reflected a 9% sales jump in the United States, Pernod Ricard's top market, with good replenishment ahead of the festive season and a rebound in demand for Jameson Irish whiskey as bars and restaurants reopened after COVID restrictions were eased.

Supply chain concerns ranging from difficulties to find containers or truck drivers led some clients in the United States to stock up ahead of the holiday season, Ricard said.

In China, sales jumped 22%, driven by demand during the Mid-Autumn Festival and Martell cognac price hikes.

"The Mid-Autumn Festival went well and our inventory level is healthy," Ricard said.

Europe also had a strong start, with sales rising 22% as consumers headed to bars and restaurants amid easing COVID restrictions.

"People are keen to connect socially and resume (pre-COVID) lifestyles," Pernod's finance chief Helene de Tissot told analysts.

China contributes around 9% to Pernod's sales and is its second-largest market.

Global travel retail sales rose 55% year-on-year, returning to growth in all regions and benefiting from a very favourable comparison base.

PARIS (Reuters) - French spirits group Pernod Ricard (PA:PERP) said it expected strong sales growth in its 2022 fiscal year despite potential disruptions tied to the COVID-19 virus, after buoyant demand in the United States, China and Europe helped it beat first-half profit and sales forecasts, lifting its shares by over 3%.

Pernod, which owns Martell cognac, Mumm champagne and Absolut vodka, said sales growth would drive operating margin expansion, although this would moderate from the first half due to increased investments.

Resilient consumption by people staying at home, the reopening of bars and restaurants and a gradual recovery in travel retail would fuel sales growth across regions, it said.

Chairman and CEO Alexandre Ricard told Reuters by phone it was too early to make a quantitative guidance for sales or profit growth in fiscal 2022.

"We are giving a qualitative guidance. A key unknown is the performance during the Chinese New Year this month," Chairman and CEO Alexandre Ricard told Reuters by phone.

"We will have more visibility in mid-March, though we remain very confident over growth momentum," he added.

Pernod, the world's second-biggest spirits group, said profit from current operations in the six months to Dec. 31 reached 1.998 billion euros ($2.28 billion), an organic rise of 22% that was more than analysts' expectations for a 16.7% rise.

Sales totalled 5.959 billion euros in the first half, representing an organic rise of 17%, compared with analysts' expectations for a 15.1% rise.

As expected, sales growth slowed to 14% in the second quarter from 20% in the first quarter, when Pernod Ricard had benefited from a low comparison base a year ago.

Pernod Ricard had flagged that the comparison base would progressively become less favourable as the year progressed.

Pernod's fiscal year started on July 1.

Last month, rival Diageo (LON:DGE) reported first-half sales up nearly 16%, buoyed by high-end spirits for home use while bars increased orders as they reopened after lockdowns.

PARIS (Reuters) -French spirits group Pernod Ricard (EPA:PERP) said on Wednesday it was banking on its portfolio of high-end brands and a growing use of data to better predict customers' habits and fine-tune pricing to accelerate sales growth over the mid-term.

The world's second-biggest spirits group behind Diageo (LON:DGE), said it would aim to deliver annual organic sales growth at the upper end of a 4-7% growth range over the mid-term.

Pernod, whose brands include Martell cognac, Mumm champagne and Absolut vodka, reiterated it aimed to lift its operating profit margin by 50-60 basis points per year, provided it could deliver annual organic sales growth within the 4-7% range.

Pricing will be key, further enhanced by the use of data to predict customers' habits and industry trends, it said.

Pernod Ricard also vowed to improve operational efficiency and keep advertising and promotional spending at 16% of sales.

Pernod Ricard is due to hold a Capital Market Day later on Wednesday to detail its strategy and digital transformation.

The financial targets unveiled on Wednesday are largely seen a continuation of prior ambitions under the group's three-year "Transform & Accelerate" plan launched in 2018.

By 0713 GMT, Pernod shares were down 1% at 179 euros, underperforming their European sector which was down 0.4%.

"The company has not pushed the bar too high, which leaves scope for overdelivery if growth comes through faster, as well as reducing the risk of disappointment if growth comes through slower," Jefferies analysts said in a note.

JP Morgan analysts however noted: "We think for now the continuity of the financial targets offers a reassuring message amid a volatile market and investors sentiment that has turned somehow cautious on spirits,"

PARIS (Reuters) -Pernod Ricard on Thursday said it planned more price increases in the second half of the year in China and the United States to protect its profit margins against the high costs of freight, energy and glass.

The owner of Martell cognac, Mumm champagne and Absolut vodka also predicted robust annual sales growth and said it was confident about its prospects in the Chinese market as it re-opens from COVID lockdowns.

The world's second largest spirits group after Diageo (LON:DGE) reported forecast-beating first-half profit and sales, helped by price hikes of around 10%. Its shares rose 5%.

Chairman and CEO Alexandre Ricard told Reuters demand was "soft" during Chinese New Year festivities in January due to COVID restrictions but noted China has since dropped its zero-COVID policy with restaurants and bars reopening.

When asked about price increases for the second half, Ricard told analysts: "It is very important to protect our margins in a highly inflationary environment...I would not be surprised if we ended the year with a high single digit price impact."

NORMALISING ENVIRONMENT

Pernod Ricard (EPA:PERP) said it expected its global sales to grow this year but in a "normalising environment".

During the COVID pandemic Pernod Ricard and its rivals benefited from people drinking more expensive types of alcohol at home.

There have been, however, growing signs the spirits industry growth was stabilising, notably in the United States, as positive effects from the pandemic fizzle out.

Pernod reported profit from current operations of 2.42 billion euros ($2.6 billion), an organic rise of 12% which topped analysts' expectations of 8.2%, for the six months ended Dec. 31.

Sales at Pernod - whose rivals include Remy Cointreau - also rose 12% to 7.12 billion euros, beating analysts' expectations of 9.7%.

The strong first-half reflected a 5% rise in the United States, Pernod's top market, with growth driven by strong price hikes across its portfolio.

In China, first-half sales grew 4%, reflecting a strong first quarter with solid demand for Martell cognac during the Mid-Autumn festival but a soft second quarter due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Investing.com -- Shares in French drinks groups Pernod Ricard (EPA:PERP) and Remy Cointreau (EPA:RCOP) fell on Monday, after analysts at JPMorgan sounded a note of caution about the outlook for sales in the crucial U.S. market.

JPMorgan analysts said they would take a "conservative" view for U.S. sales this year, given the ongoing squeeze on real incomes through high inflation and the depletion of pandemic-era savings.

They lowered their recommendation on Pernod Ricard, the maker of Havana Club rum, Absolut vodka and Jameson's whisky, to neutral from overweight and also put the stock on negative catalyst watch.

The analysts also kept their underweight rating on Remy Cointreau, which had warned late last year that it expected a "normalization" of consumption trends in 2023 after a sharp rebound in the wake of COVID-19 restrictions being lifted.

By 05:00 ET (09:00 GMT), Pernod Ricard stock was down 1.3% in Paris, while Remy Cointreau stock was down 1.8%. The benchmark CAC 40 index, by contrast, was up 0.9% on a morning when stock markets broadly were breathing a sigh of relief at the lack of financial sector drama over the weekend.

Diageo (LON:DGE) stock was up 0.1% in London, while Campari (BIT:CPRI) stock was up 0.3% in Milan.

Re: Pernod Ricard PARYŻ: RI alkohole m.in. Absolut, Ballantine's, Luksusowa, Chivas Regal, Malibu, Stolichnaya vodka

Pernod Ricard (EPA:PERP) stock fell 0.1% after the French spirits group reported disappointing sales in the third quarter, but said it was still confident of delivering a strong performance over the 2022/2023 full year.

PARIS (Reuters) - French spirits group Pernod Ricard (EPA:PERP) reported a bigger-than-expected decline in third-quarter sales but said it was confident of delivering a strong performance over the 2022/2023 full year, predicting "very strong" sales in the fourth quarter.

Pernod, the world's second-biggest spirits group after Diageo (LON:DGE), said that it expected consumer demand to recover further in China following the lifting of COVID restrictions.

It also banked on more favourable comparables in the United States and in China, where it planned further price increases.

Finance Chief Helene de Tissot told Reuters the group was "very confident" about prospects for demand for its premium Martell cognac in China in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year after a March rebound. Price increases planned for Martell in China in May would be in a mid-single to high-single digit range, she said.

The owner of Mumm champagne, Absolut vodka and Martell cognac predicted organic growth of about 10% in group profit from recurring operations in its full financial year ending June 30, with some expansion in operating margin.

"We keep increasing our prices. It gives us confidence we can protect gross margins," Tissot told analysts.

While cost inflation was expected to stay high in the final quarter of the fiscal year, logistics and distribution costs would moderate, she added.

Pernod Ricard reported sales of 2.391 billion euros ($2.64 billion) in the three months to March 31 - a 2.2% decline on a like-for-like basis, which was below analysts' expectations of 0.5% growth.

By 0936 GMT, Pernod Ricard shares were up 0.23% at 216.70 euros, after falling as much as 3% in early trade.

The third-quarter performance reflected high year-ago comparables in the United States and inventory adjustments after soft demand for Martell cognac during the festive season in China. Martell sales, however, rebounded strongly in March, it said. Group sales for the nine-months reached 9.507 billion euros, a like-for-like rise of 7.6%.

In the key growth market of India where sales rose 15% in the nine months, Pernod Ricard remained "very ambitious for the short and long term" despite the regulatory challenges it faces.

Pernod was "hopeful" it would obtain the renewal of a liquor sale licence in New Delhi, that city authorities had rejected earlier this month.
