(Reuters) – Allianz Real Estate said on Wednesday it had invested 7.9 billion Swedish crowns ($870.88 million) in Heimstaden Bostad’s portfolio of properties in Sweden that it recently acquired from its rival Akelius Residential Properties.

The agreement will form a joint venture on the 30.4 billion Swedish crown portfolio, which includes 3,377 homes in Malmo and 5,932 homes in Stockholm, the asset manager said in a statement.

Allianz Real Estate, on behalf of insurer Allianz, said the joint venture will be funded with equity, as well as a debt facility from Heimstaden.

Heimstaden in September agreed to buy Akelius’ 599 properties in Germany, Denmark and Sweden for 92.5 billion Swedish crowns ($10.6 billion), following a string of smaller portfolio acquisitions this year across northern and central Europe.

LONDON (Reuters) -Asset manager Allianz (DE:ALVG) Global Investors, part of German insurer Allianz, said on Wednesday it had set up a new unit focused on 'impact' investing in private markets, as part of a sustainable investing drive.

AllianzGI, which manages around 647 billion euros ($730.27 billion) in assets, will look to invest in private companies helping solve environmental or social issues in a measurable way, it said in a statement.

Interest in companies performing better on such measures has surged in recent years as more investors expect such investments to reduce risk and drive stronger returns, particularly as the world transitions to a low-carbon economy.

Impact investing, meanwhile, takes that a step further by tracking the impact of the investments on people and the planet, not just the company's returns.

The new team of 12 will be overseen by Matt Christensen, Global Head of Sustainable and Impact Investing, AllianzGI added.

"Investors want to see a positive change for the planet while generating a return, and impact investing offers a solution to these twin goals," Christensen said.

AllianzGI said it was also creating a new "Impact Measurement & Management" team, led by Diane Mak to help select the investments and assess their impact.

"The future growth trajectory of impact investing depends on asset managers demonstrating how the impact can be measured and reported," Christensen said.

The COVID-19 pandemic drew attention to deepening social inequality which brought impact investing to an "inflection point," the head of Singapore's Temasek Holdings said last year.

Last week, Swedish private equity firm Summa Equity said it raised $2.6 billion for Europe's biggest-ever impact fund.

The Texas-based private equity firm TPG, which went public earlier this month with a more than $10 billion valuation, also has an impact investing arm, and raised a $5.4 billion for its first climate-focused impact fund.[nL4N2P32MJ]

The fund, called TPG Rise, recently led a $170 million funding round in Israeli cleantech company UBQ Materials, which turns household waste into bio-based plastic for use in industries such as construction and carmaking.

AllianzGI's announcement comes as Tibetan activists demand that the group drop its sponsorship of the Beijing Winter Olympics over allegations of human rights abuses in China.

Allianz said it had been in contact with activists and that it was committed to supporting the values of the Olympics.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -Germany's Allianz (ETR:ALVG) said on Wednesday it would set aside another 1.9 billion euros ($2 billion) as it braces for the outcome of U.S. regulatory investigations into a multibillion-dollar trading debacle at its funds arm.

The collapse of a $15 billion set of investment funds during the pandemic market turmoil in early 2020 has cast a long shadow over Germany's most valuable financial firm and one of the world's largest asset managers.

The new provision comes on top of 3.7 billion euros the company set aside in February to cover litigation and U.S. regulatory investigations into the funds' demise. It brings the total to 5.6 billion euros.

Allianz said Wednesday's booking hit its first-quarter net profit, which was 600 million euros, less than the 1.9 billion euros analysts had expected.

The collapse of the funds has been under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission, Allianz has disclosed, as well as the subject of numerous investor lawsuits.

"The fresh charge clearly shows the enormous damage that has been done," said Ingo Speich, head of sustainability and corporate governance at Deka, a top Allianz investor.

Allianz said the additional provision should cover the remaining costs it could incur. The sense of certainty suggests a settlement with the U.S. government could be in the offing.

"This provision booked is a fair estimate of its remaining financial exposure in relation to compensation payments to investors and to payments under any resolution of the governmental proceedings," Allianz said.

Allianz said it was seeking a "timely" resolution to its talks with the DOJ and SEC.

Its shares traded 3% higher in late Frankfurt trade, outperforming a 1% gain in the DAX index of blue-chips stocks.

"Allianz seems to have come a significant step closer to a conclusion on the risk from the...funds," said Steffen Weyl, a fund manager with Union Investment, which is an Allianz shareholder.

Analysts with Jefferies said the provision, coming earlier and smaller than expected, removes "a substantial overhang on the shares".

CEO Oliver Baete has apologised to investors and shareholders for the matter, conceding "not everything was perfect in the fund management".

Baete and other top managers took a cut in last year's bonuses as a result, though Baete earned 9% more in 2021 than a year earlier.

The issue has worried Allianz's top shareholders and harmed its reputation with pension funds that provide a source of business for one of Germany's best known brands.

The issue centres around Allianz funds that used complex options strategies to generate returns but racked up massive losses when the spread of COVID-19 triggered wild stock market swings in February and March 2020.

For Allianz, which has 2.6 trillion euros of assets under management, the issue has already dented earnings. Its 2021 profit was the lowest since 2013.

Investors in the so-called Structured Alpha set of funds have claimed some $6 billion in damages from the losses in cases filed in the United States.

The set of funds catered in particular to normally conservative U.S. pension funds, from those for labourers in Alaska to teachers in Arkansas to subway workers in New York.

The Arkansas Teacher Retirement System was the first of at least two dozen lawsuits lodged against Allianz in the aftermath of the collapse.

The Arkansas pension fund, which had $1.6 billion in three Structured Alpha funds at the end of 2019, said in its July 2020 lawsuit that it had lost at least $774 million due to "negligent mismanagement" of the funds.

It secured a settlement of $642 million, according to minutes of a board meeting.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Germany's financial watchdog BaFin has called on Allianz (ETR:ALVG) to improve its internal controls following fraud at its U.S. funds unit, WirtschaftsWoche reported on Friday.

The regulator sent Allianz a letter with concrete demands some weeks ago, the magazine reported, citing sources close to Allianz.

BaFin was not immediately able to comment, and Allianz could not immediately be reached.

In May, Allianz agreed to pay more than $6 billion and its U.S. asset management unit pleaded guilty to criminal securities fraud over the collapse of a group of investment funds early in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zurich Insurance sets more ambitious financial targets

ZURICH/LONDON (Reuters) -Zurich Insurance Group set more ambitious financial targets for the next three years on Wednesday as insurers benefit from rising premium rates.

Insurers globally have faced losses from unexpected events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and large natural catastrophes.

But they have responded by raising prices and restricting coverage, with a view to shielding their profits.

"We are extremely adaptable and we're extremely agile and fast in responding and we are resilient," CEO Mario Greco told Reuters.

"We know in the next three years things will not be as we planned...we know how to change gear."

Zurich aims to raise its business operating profit after tax return on equity (BOPAT ROE) to above 20% by 2025 and generate compound organic growth in earnings per share of 8% per year in new 2023-2025 targets, Europe's fifth-largest insurer saidahead of an investor day.

The insurer is on course to beat its previous three-year targets and its new BOPAT ROE target is higher than its previous target of above 14%.

However, the latest targets were set with reference to the new international accounting standard for insurers IFRS 17, which Greco said gave a boost of around 2.5 percentage points to return on equity.

Zurich also aims for cumulative cash remittances in excess of $13.5 billion and a Swiss Solvency Test (SST) ratio of at least 160%.

Zurich maintained its dividend policy, which targets a pay-out ratio of around 75% of net income attributable to shareholders, it said. Greco said higher earnings would lead to higher dividend payouts but there was little liquidity room to change the policy.

The targets do not anticipate any need for M&A, chief financial officer George Quinn told a media call, though he said the group had "the option, if things come up that make sense."

Rival Allianz (ETR:ALVG) set out three-year targets last year, targeting 5-7% annual growth in earnings per share and a minimum 13% return on equity.

AXA said earlier this year that it expected underlying earnings per share to grow at the high end of its 3-7% target range by 2023, and cumulative cash to exceed its 14-billion-euros ($14.56 billion) target during 2021 to 2023.

Zurich's shares rose 0.16% at 0810 GMT. KBW analysts said the targets were "probably priced in", reiterating their "underperform" rating on the stock.
