Board member says BMW to cut production cost per vehicle by 25%

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - BMW plans significant production cost cuts by the middle of the decade, one of the German carmaker's board members said, in a bid to become more competitive with Volkswagen (DE:VOWG_p), Daimler (OTC:DDAIF) and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA).

"We will lower the production costs per vehicle by 25% by 2025 - compared with the level in 2019," Milan Nedeljkovic, BMW's board member in charge or production, was quoted as saying by German newspaper Handelsblatt.

Last month BMW said it remained on course to meet its profit targets for 2021, despite rising raw material costs, although a global chip shortage will worsen and may hit production in the second quarter.

Volkswagen, BMW Fined $1 Billion by Europe Over Diesel-Tech Collusion
Brussels finds German auto makers prevented competition in developing emissions-management systems

The European Commission on Thursday slapped fines totalling $1 billion on BMW AG and Volkswagen AG, as well as VW’s Porsche and Audi units, after finding that the German auto makers had colluded to impede competition in diesel emissions systems.

The investigation dates back to 2019 when, in the wake of the Volkswagen diesel emissions-cheating scandal, the Commission alleged that German car makers had held technical meetings between 2009 and 2014 that violated European Union antitrust rules because the companies agreed not to compete to develop the best emissions systems for diesel-powered cars. Instead, they agreed to fulfill the minimum requirements of EU regulation.

“These car makers illegally colluded to restrict competition on emissions cleaning technology in diesel cars,” EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager told reporters. “Today’s case is about how legitimate cooperation has gone wrong.”

BMW said in a statement that it agreed to settle the investigation after the EU dropped additional antitrust charges. The company said the talks with other car makers were aimed at creating a customer-friendly emissions system, and said BMW never engaged in any unlawful manipulation of emissions-control systems.

Volkswagen said, “The Commission is breaking new legal ground with this decision, because it is the first time it has prosecuted technical cooperation as an antitrust violation. It is also imposing fines even though the contents of the talks were never implemented and customers were therefore never harmed.”

BERLIN (Reuters) - Rolls-Royce (OTC:RYCEY) will produce only electric cars by 2030, the luxury carmaker said on Wednesday, joining other premium brands making the switch such as Volkswagen (DE:VOWG_p)'s Bentley and Jaguar's Land Rover.

The BMW-owned brand said in a statement that its first fully electric powered car, named 'Spectre', will be on the market in the fourth quarter of 2023, with testing to begin soon.

"With this new product we set out our credentials for the full electrification of our entire product portfolio by 2030, said Torsten Muller-Otvos, CEO of Rolls-Royce, which is based in the south of England.

"By then, Rolls-Royce will no longer be in the business of producing or selling any internal combustion engine products," Muller-Otvos added.

BMW has not set an end date for producing fossil fuel burning cars, instead setting a goal of 50% electric vehicle production by 2030, but its subsidiary Mini said in March it would go all-electric by the end of the decade.

The Jaguar brand of Tata Motors (NYSE:TTM)' Jaguar Land Rover will go all-electric by 2025, Volkswagen AG (OTC:VWAGY)' luxury unit Bentley Motors by 2030, and Mercedes Benz maker Daimler (OTC:DDAIF) by the same year, if market conditions allow.

BMW lifts annual profit forecast to 9.5%-10.5% as high prices cushion chip troubles

ERLIN (Reuters) -BMW AG lifted its annual profit margin forecast to between 9.5% and 10.5% from 7% to 9%, the company said in an ad hoc statement on Thursday, as higher prices for new and used vehicles outweigh the effect of supply-chain issues.

The carmaker also boosted its forecast for return on equity in its financial services segment to 20%-23% from 17%-20% and said it expects free cash flow in its automobile segment of approximately 6.5 billion euros.

"Whilst the semiconductor supply restrictions are expected to further impact production and deliveries to customers in the coming months, BMW AG expects that the continuing positive pricing effects for both new and pre-owned vehicles will overcompensate these negative sales volume effects in the current financial year," the company said.

BMW's Frankfurt-listed shares were up 2% on the news.

Though chip shortages have plagued the auto industry for months, prompting companies from Renault (PA:RENA Renault to Toyota to warn of longer-term hits to output, higher prices have allowed some to offset their losses, companies have said.

Daimler AG (DE:DAIGn) in August attributed higher than expected earnings in its Mercedes-Benz division to pricing effects. BMW had also raised its profit forecast in August after strong quarterly results, but warned at the time that chip shortages could plague the second half of the year.

Still, BMW's strong relations with its suppliers have meant it was less affected by the shortages than other carmakers, many of whom were forced to bring production to a halt indefinitely at some of their plants.

The company is due to report results on Nov. 3.

South African metalworkers' strike hits output at BMW plant

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - Output at luxury carmaker BMW's main vehicle assembly plant in South Africa has been hit by a wage strike in the engineering sector by the country's biggest metalworkers union, a company spokesperson said on Monday.

"While our associates have been reporting for work, we have lost production since the strike commenced ... as a number of suppliers to the plant have been affected," Hailey Philander told Reuters.

She said production of around 700 vehicles was lost, but gave no further details.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) launched the strike last Tuesday after pay talks with employer bodies reached a deadlock, raising fears the action would spill over and block supplies of parts to make new cars.

BMW's plant is at Rosslyn, around 60 kilometres from the commercial city of Johannesburg.

On Friday, NUMSA said its members were considering a new proposal to end the strike. On Monday, the union was still collating feedback before making a decision.

NUMSA, with around 155,000 members organised in the sector, wants an 8% across-the-board wage hike in the first year, and inflation plus 2% for the second and third years.

Industry body Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA) had initially offered 4.4% for 2021, inflation plus 0.5% in 2022 and inflation plus 1% in the third year.

"It is concerning for the whole autos manufacturing sector that the strike in the metals and engineering space has continued till now, but we know that negotiations to resolve are advanced and we hope a breakthrough is imminent," said Renai Moothilal, executive director at the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM).

Spokespeople at Ford, Volkswagen (DE:VOWG_p) and Toyota said they had not been affected by the strike so far.
