Commerzbank foresees difficult fourth quarter - intranet post

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Commerzbank (ETR:CBKG)'s top executives told employees on Friday that the next three months will be the hardest this year for the bank and that a recession in Germany was more likely.

"There are still three months of the business year ahead of us," finance chief Bettina Orlopp said in an interview posted on the bank's intranet and seen by Reuters.

"And in purely economic terms, they'll probably be the most difficult three months of the year," she said.

The bank is nevertheless forecasting a net profit this year of more than 1 billion euros ($977.20 million), helped by higher interest rates and what Orlopp described as good operational performance.

The statements follow a two-day meeting this week of management with the supervisory board to discuss strategy.

Chief Executive Officer Manfred Knof told employees in the online interview that the bank was tweaking its international presence in North Africa and the Middle East "because the issue of energy procurement will take on a totally new significance".

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz travelled to the Gulf last weekend to secure energy deals for Europe's largest economy.

LONDON (Reuters) - A former London-based Commerzbank (ETR:CBKG) compliance officer is seeking almost 580,000 pounds ($707,000) in compensation after winning a sex and maternity discrimination and harassment case following a near eight-year battle against the German bank.

Jagruti Rajput, who joined Commerzbank in 2012 and rose to deputy head of markets compliance, has twice won parts of a discrimination claim she first brought in 2017 after she was passed over for promotion and argued her job was marginalized in the run-up to and following maternity leave in 2016.

Elaine Banton, a lawyer for Rajput, told a remedy hearing at London's central employment tribunal on Monday that her client had been denied a promotion and effectively demoted and crushed in what amounted to egregious discrimination and serious injury to feelings.

Rajput said in court documents that the drawn-out case, which turns in part on whether she was the best candidate for head of markets if the process had been fair, had upended her life, health and career prospects, leading to a breakdown in 2018, suicidal thoughts, paralysing flashbacks and panic attacks.

"I feel I'm not happy doing anything. I used to love everything about my life and now I feel nothing," she said in documents filed with the court and seen by Reuters on Monday.

It is unusual for such cases to come to court because the vast majority settle before trial, often because employers are wary of the reputational damage of airing internal disputes in open court.

Commerzbank has appealed elements of the case and on Monday called parts of Rajput's claim, which includes 285,772 pounds for financial loss, 45,000 pounds for injury to feelings, 50,000 pounds for aggravated damages and almost 50,000 for training and mentoring courses, "wholly disproportionate".

The bank accepts that she is due a "significant sum" for injury of feelings - although it vigorously disputes the level.

"As an employer, we are committed to equal opportunities in our workplace," a Commerzbank spokesperson said.

Rajput was subsequently made redundant in 2020 when Commerzbank sold its equities and commodities markets business to French peer Societe Generale (OTC:SCGLY).

The two-day hearing is due to conclude on Tuesday.

Elevated rates boost Commerzbank to highest net income in over ten years

Investing.com -- Commerzbank AG O.N. (ETR:CBKG) has reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter net income, pushing the annual number up to its highest annual level in over a decade, thanks in large part to recently elevated interest rates that helped offset weakness at its securities business.

In the three months to the end of December, net income grew by 12.1% to €472 million (€1 = $1.0703), well ahead of Bloomberg consensus estimates of €411.9M. During the 12 months until the end of December, the figure more than tripled compared to the same period in the prior year to €1.4 billion.

Undergirding this annual uptick was a tailwind from rising borrowing costs, which boosted net interest income for the full year by a third to €6.46B. Branch closures and job cuts in response to wider inflationary pressures contributed to a 6.2% reduction in operating expenses to €5.84B as well.

These returns were somewhat tempered by a 2.4% drop in net commission fees to €3.52B, reflecting a downturn at its securities trading unit stemming from a stock market declines last year.

Meanwhile, Commerzbank was hit by an operating loss at its subsidiary in Poland, mBank, that was linked to "the possibility of interest and redemption deferrals for private real estate financing" introduced by the Polish government.

The group flagged that it expects to see a "challenging environment" again this year, but said it is still aiming for a net result "well above that of 2022."

“Our strong net profit proves that we have increased the Bank’s competitiveness and resilience. Commerzbank is now able to buffer crises and high extraordinary burdens without affecting its capital base," said Chief Financial Officer Bettina Orlopp in a statement.

Analysts subsequently noted that they anticipate consensus estimates will likely be upgraded in the wake of the earnings.

Shares in Commerzbank jumped by more than 8% on Thursday.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Germany's Commerzbank (ETR:CBKG) will rejoin the DAX index on Feb. 27, Deutsche Boerse (ETR:DB1Gn) announced late on Friday, marking a comeback for Germany's No. 2 lender after it was removed from the club of blue-chip companies in 2018.

The return to the index comes after Commerzbank launched a major overhaul two years ago that saw thousands of job cuts and branch closures that restored profitability.

"This shows that we are on the right track with our restructuring - and spurs us on to continue with the same energy," Commerzbank AG (OTC:CRZBY) said on Twitter in response to the announcement.

Commerzbank rises as Germany's No. 2 lender returns to DAX index

Investing.com -- Shares in Commerzbank AG (ETR:CBKG) rose on Monday after the German lender re-entered the DAX index, replacing chemicals giant Linde (ETR:LINI).

Commerzbank is rejoining the exclusive club of Germany's blue-chip firms for the first time since 2018, when it was taken off the index to make way for payments processor Wirecard.

Since that time, the second-biggest bank in Germany has undergone a sweeping overhaul of its operations that saw thousands of jobs cut and branches shuttered in a bid to boost profits. Earlier this month, Commerzbank reported its highest annual net income in over a decade and said it expects to see an improvement to that result in 2023.

Meanwhile, Wirecard filed for insolvency in 2020 following revelations that it had been operating a multi-year fraud that had left a hole in its accounts worth nearly €2 billion (€1 = $1.0562). In the wake of the scandal, DAX-compiler Deutsche Boerse (ETR:DB1Gn) expanded the index to include 40 companies instead of 30 and made membership rules stricter.

Founded in 1988 as a German response to the FTSE in the U.K. or the Dow Jones Industrial Average in the U.S., the DAX features some of the most historic corporate names in Europe's largest economy, including Volkswagen AG (ETR:VOWG_p), Allianz SE (ETR:ALVG), and Adidas AG (ETR:ADSGN).

Linde - until recently, the DAX's largest member by market value - announced in October that it would delist from the Frankfurt stock exchange. The maker of industrial gases said it will form a new holding company (NYSE:LIN) to trade on the New York Stock Exchange, arguing that the DAX had weighed on its valuation.

Credit Suisse wstrząsnął rynkami
Akcje Credit Suisse traciły podczas środowej sesji prawie 30 proc. Kilkakrotnie wstrzymywano obrót nimi na giełdzie szwajcarskiej. Paniczna wyprzedaż papierów Credit Suisse pociągnęła w dół papiery innych europejskich banków.

Akcje BNP Paribas traciły po południu 11 proc., papiery Societe Generale taniały o 12 proc., Deutsche Banku zniżkowały o 8 proc., Commerzbanku o 9 proc. Niemiecki indeks giełdowy DAX zniżkował na koniec sesji o 2,8 proc., francuski CAC 40 o 3,2 proc., włoski FTSE MIB o 4,1 proc. a polski WIG 20 o 2,7 proc.

"Zbyt duży, by upaść i zbyt duży, by zostać uratowanym".

Commerzbank unveils new capital return policy, aims for €3 billion payout by 2024

Commerzbank (ETR:CBKG) Aktiengesellschaft (CZB) has decided to increase shareholder participation in the company's success, following the successful implementation of its 'Strategy 2024'. The bank's Board of Managing Directors, after consulting with the Supervisory Board, has updated the Bank's Capital Return Policy.

The German bank has confirmed a total payout of €3 billion for the period from 2022 to 2024. To achieve this goal, the payout ratio for 2024 is planned to be at least 70%. CEO Manfred Knof stated that this planned increase in the payout ratio reflects their confidence in the bank's further development.

InvestingPro data shows that Commerzbank has a market cap of 12737.64M USD and is trading at a low P/E ratio of 7.55. The bank's revenue growth for LTM2023.Q2 stands at 6.04%, indicating a stable financial performance. The bank's return on assets for LTM2023.Q2 is 0.33%, demonstrating efficient management of its resources.

In addition to dividends, Commerzbank intends to return capital to shareholders through share buy-backs. A prerequisite for a share buy-back is a CET1 ratio of at least 13.5% after distribution, subject to approval from the European Central Bank (ECB) and the German Finance Agency.

InvestingPro Tips suggest that the bank is trading at a low Price / Book multiple and has been profitable over the last twelve months. These insights serve to further highlight the bank's robust financial health and its potential for growth.

For the years 2025 to 2027, Commerzbank plans a payout ratio above 50%, but not exceeding the net result after AT1 coupons and minorities. This depends on economic development and business opportunities. A dividend will only be issued if the CET1 ratio is at least 250 basis points above the Minimum Regulatory Requirements (MDA) after distribution. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will decide on each dividend payment.

Commerzbank expects increased profitability of its businesses and projects a net return on tangible equity (RoTE) of more than 11% by 2027, given a CET1 ratio of 13.5%. After restructuring successfully, Commerzbank has resumed returning capital to shareholders for the financial year 2022. In total, it has distributed around €370 million via dividends and a first share buy-back, corresponding to a payout ratio of 30%. For the current financial year, the bank aims to increase the payout ratio to 50%.

On November 8, 2023, Commerzbank will present all details of the further developed strategy as well as the concrete measures and targets for the years 2024 to 2027. The full revised Capital Return Policy will soon be available on the Commerzbank website.
