(Reuters) -Mercedes-Benz maker Daimler AG (DE:DAIGn) on Thursday reported preliminary adjusted group earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) of 5.42 billion euros ($6.42 billion) for the second quarter, with car and truck divisions beating analyst targets.

Mercedes-Benz Car and Van results were helped by pricing and cost discipline, helping to offset any impact from a global shortage of semiconductors. Adjusted EBIT for Mercedes-Benz cars and vans was 3.60 billion euros, versus consensus of 3.1 billion euros, it said.

Adjusted EBIT for Daimler (OTC:DDAIF) trucks and buses was 831 million euros, versus consensus of 680 million euros, the company said in a statement.

"Daimler Trucks & Buses sales increased in almost all regions due to improved market conditions, which translated into higher profitability in the second quarter. In addition, the Daimler Trucks & Buses EBIT benefited from strong pricing, higher after sales business and positive, non-recurring valuation effects of around 100 million euros," it said.

The overall adjusted EBIT of 5.4 billion euros topped expectations of 4.3 billion, it said.

Daimler's truck unit aims to cut costs and capital expenditure by 15% by 2025 and boost profit margins across all regions regardless of market conditions, it said in May.

The group's preliminary EBIT for the second quarter was 5.19 billion euros. In the second quarter of last year, the company reported an EBIT loss of 1.68 billion euros.

The company's chief financial officer, Harald Wilhelm, last month said Daimler was on track to spin off Daimler Truck, the world's largest truck and bus maker, by the end of the year.

Under the planned spin-off, a significant majority stake in Daimler Truck would be distributed to Daimler shareholders.

Last month, the company also said it was cutting working hours at some plants as car makers suffered from a shortage of semiconductors.

Daimler sees Q3 hit to Mercedes sales from chip shortage

BERLIN (Reuters) -German luxury carmaker Daimler said on Thursday it expected significantly lower third-quarter sales at its Mercedes unit due to a global semiconductor shortage, becoming the latest in a string of automakers to take a hit to revenues.Automakers from U.S. group General Motors (NYSE:GM) to India's Mahindra have slashed output and sales forecasts due to scarce chip supplies, made worse by a COVID-19 resurgence in key Asian semiconductor production hubs.

"With the plant closings at semiconductor suppliers in Malaysia and elsewhere, the challenge has now become even greater, so that our sales in the third quarter will probably be noticeably below the second quarter," Daimler CEO Ola Kaellenius told the Automobilwoche weekly in an interview.

Kaellenius did not specify how production would be affected by the shortage. The carmaker cut working hours in July at plants in Germany and Hungary because of lacking chip supply. Daimler was not immediately available for comment.

General Motors also said on Thursday chip shortages and COVID-19 restrictions were delaying production, with the company resorting to repairing and shipping unfinished vehicles to dealers.

Still, Kaellenius said he was confident Daimler was better prepared than before the pandemic for supply chain shocks. "We have made our business significantly more flexible and watertight," he said, adding customers were used to waiting for highly sought-after products.

Daimler has extended contracts on its leasing services to ease the concerns of customers waiting for their orders of new cars to arrive, the CEO said.

Daimler left its profit margin outlook for the year unchanged in July after reporting better-than-expected second quarter earnings. Like General Motors, it said at the time it was preparing unfinished vehicles as far as it could to be ready to slot in chips upon arrival.

Toyota said in September it was slashing production by 40% due to the lack of chips. Ford reported on Wednesday it was cutting pickup truck production. Renault (PA:RENA) last week extended stoppages at three Spanish plants until the end of the year.

Consultants J.D. Power and LMC Automotive also warned last week that U.S. auto retail sales were likely to have fallen sharply in August, with dealers holding just 942,000 vehicles in inventory, down from 3 million two years ago.

Kaellenius refrained from predicting an end to the shortage, pointing out that supply strains such as the lockdowns in Malaysia were impossible to foresee. "What is important is that demand for cars is there," he said. "At some point the chip problem will also be solved."

Daimler is due to report third quarter earnings on Oct. 29.

Daimler expands European battery network with 33% stake in ACC venture

BERLIN (Reuters) -Daimler's Mercedes-Benz said on Friday it will take a 33% stake in battery cell manufacturer Automotive Cells Company (ACC), expanding its European sourcing of battery cells key to its EV ambitions and currently produced primarily in Asia.

ACC, founded in 2020 by France's Stellantis and TotalEnergies, will begin supplying Mercedes-Benz with batteries from its production locations in France and Germany from the middle of the decade.

"Our focus is on Europe," Daimler (OTC:DDAIF) Chief Executive Ola Kallenius told a press conference. "That is where ACC wants to grow, expand, and develop technologies with us."

Daimler, which plans on making exclusively electric vehicles in 2030 if market conditions allow, will invest up to a billion euros ($1.2 billion) in the battery venture starting with a mid-three-digit-million cash investment next year, the company said.

ACC, which had previously planned for 48 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of capacity at its two plants, now aims to reach at least 120 GWh by 2030, it said on Friday, a goal which will require seven billion euros in equity, debt and subsidies.

Daimler board member Markus Schaefer declined to specify what proportion of ACC's desired capacity would be allocated to Daimler, stating only that it was "absolutely significant".

The luxury carmaker, whose previous CEO deemed producing battery cells in-house too costly, has taken a strategic turn under Kallenius towards aiming for more control over its battery supply chain, announcing its goal in July of building eight gigafactories with 200 GWh of capacity.

ACC already has ties to Germany: a 2 billion euro investment in a battery cell plant in Kaiserslautern, due to start production in 2025.

The company plans on expanding its European network, but specific locations have not yet been determined, ACC told Reuters.

Daimler, which said in July that four of the eight gigafactories would be in Europe and one in the United States, is in discussion with potential partners in both regions about further investments.

"Everyone talked to us, everyone wants to do business with us," Kallenius said, adding that the company planned on building all its cell factories through joint ventures.

"There are no concrete plans to make our own 'Daimler-only' factories," Kallenius said.

Daimler currently relies on Asian partners such as CATL, SK Innovation and LG Chem for its battery supply, and took a 3% stake in Chinese-American supplier Farasis last year.

CATL and Farasis are building battery factories in Germany, but production is not due to start until 2022 and 2024 respectively.

Daimler added that the battery cells produced by ACC would be 95% recyclable as per its goal of a CO2-neutral supply chain by 2039.

Będzie wielki europejski producent baterii do aut. Mercedes wchodzi do gry

Daimler, właściciel marki Mercedes-Benz, wchodzi w sojusz z Francuzami.

Część ekspertów uważa zatem, że europejskie koncerny motoryzacyjne rozmyślają teraz nad produkcją różnych elementów we własnym zakresie - najlepiej w europejskich fabrykach.

ACC pracuje w tym momencie nad budową czterech fabryk baterii do aut elektrycznych. Trzy mają powstać we Francji, a jedna - w niemieckim Kaiserslautern.

Daimler CEO hopes to stabilize supply chain this quarter

DETROIT (Reuters) - Daimler AG (DE:DAIGn) Chief Executive Ola Kaellenius told Reuters on Friday the automaker hopes to stabilize its supply chain for semiconductors during this quarter, but expects real relief from shortages of chips will not arrive until 2023.

Kaellenius, who is visiting Mercedes operations in the United States, said production of Mercedes vehicles during the fourth quarter will be lower than a year ago, which was an unusually strong quarter as the company began recovering from pandemic shutdowns.

"We cannot have 100 percent certainty" about supplies of semiconductors, Kaellenius said. COVID-related shutdowns this summer at Malaysian plants that process semiconductors set back the auto industry's efforts to recover production lost earlier in the year.

"We hope to be able to stabilize the situation in the fourth quarter, and take that to the next level in 2022," he said. However, he said, major chip producers are saying restrictions in supply could continue into 2023.

"We have to stay flexible," Kaellenius said.

Daimler (OTC:DDAIF) is managing supply-chain disruptions on top of planning for a split of the company into a standalone luxury vehicle company, Mercedes-Benz, and a separate commercial truck business. Mercedes is accelerating its shift to an all-electric lineup by 2030.

Mercedes is launching an electric top-of-the-line sedan, the EQS, and is preparing to launch production of an electric EQS SUV at its factory in Alabama that will go on sale next year.

"We are trying to speed up the transition" to electric vehicles, Kaellenius said.

The EQS sedan and SUV should be "profitable from the word go" in the U.S. market, he said.

Afera spalinowa. DUH: "Mercedes stosuje urządzenia fałszujące poziom emisji". Mamy komentarz Mercedesa

Jak czytamy we wnioskach z raportu DUH, przebadane auto ("Mercedes E350 z silnikiem Diesla") w rzeczywistych warunkach jazdy emituje pięciokrotnie więcej tlenków azotu, niż podczas testów homologacyjnych.

W rezultacie skuteczny zwykle sprzęt do oczyszczania spalin często działa tylko w ułamku swojej potencjalnej wydajności, a pojazd emituje niepotrzebnie duże ilości tlenków azotu.
