Lufthansa CEO sees business travel recovering faster than thought

VIENNA (Reuters) - Business air travel is recovering faster than expected and should remain solid through the winter, the chief executive of Germany's Lufthansa said in remarks published on Monday.

Meanwhile private travel is seeing an "extension of the summer season" as people catch up on flights they were not able to take immediately after the onset of the pandemic, Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr told Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung.

"In addition, we are seeing a positive trend in business travel, which was still at a low level in the third quarter and is now picking up strongly," Spohr said in an interview.

Global air travel was brought to a standstill by the coronavirus pandemic, forcing Lufthansa into a multi-billion dollar bailout by the German government.

Lufthansa expects the level of business travel in the medium term to be around 90% or more of what it was before COVID-19.

"There will ... be no sudden drop in demand in winter this year," he said of the outlook for business travel as demand tends to fade less in that segment in winter and the "good development" in bookings is expected to last until December.

"Business travel has returned faster and more strongly than expected," Spohr said, adding that it was being felt in particular in the German, Swiss, Austrian, Belgian and northern Italian markets, where more flights have been added.

Deutsche Bank Falls; Trading Income Takes a Hit

Investing.com – Deutsche Bank (DE:DBKGn) stock (NYSE:DB) fell 5.5% on Nasdaq in Wednesday’s premarket trading as revenue from trading in fixed income securities and currencies fell 12% in the third quarter.

Revenue from fixed income business has fallen at other global banks too after last year’s boom but it exposed once more the vulnerability of the German lender, dependent on the business for more than a quarter of its revenue.

The fall in fixed income trading revenue at Deutsche compares with an average decline of 13% at the five biggest U.S. investment banks, according to Bloomberg.

Chief Executive Officer Christian Sewing, tasked with turning around the bank more than 3 years ago, has relied on strong growth in fixed income so far to achieve the objective.

Fee revenue from advising on deals and fund-raising activities rose 22% as capital markets boomed and corporates went for M&As and restructuring. However, it remained a bystander to the boom in equities trading at its Wall Street rivals, having quit the business two years ago.

Revenue growth at corporate banking was mostly flat while it fell in the retail division.

Spain’s Banco Santander (NYSE:SAN) also fell on Wednesday, declining 2%, even as it said it would “significantly” beat its profit target for this year. Growth at rival lenders UBS (NYSE:UBS) and Barclays (NYSE:BCS) had fuelled optimism about the sector and bank share prices had recently gained.

Net revenue in the third quarter rose 2% to 6 billion euro (around $7 billion) and group net income was higher by 6% to 329 million euros.

BERLIN/ROME (Reuters) - Germany's flagship carrier Lufthansa is in talks to buy a 40% stake in state-owned Alitalia's successor ITA Airways, two people familiar with the negotiations said on Sunday, following a newspaper report that a deal could be unveiled next week.

The talks about a tie-up between Germany's partly state-owned Lufthansa and ITA Airways are still ongoing with all outcomes possible, one of the sources said on condition of anonymity, adding the stake price was still under negotiation.

The second source said Lufthansa and ITA were in talks over a 40% stake sale, but it could take longer than a few days to reach a comprehensive deal.

A Lufthansa spokesperson declined to comment, but reiterated an earlier statement that the German carrier was open to the possibility of a partnership with ITA.

An ITA spokesperson, when asked for comment by Reuters on a potential investment by Lufthansa, did not mention Lufthansa but said that the airline's top management would present a strategic plan to the company's board on Jan. 31. A data room would then be opened in the following days, he added, allowing a potential bidder or partner to have access to key financial documents to assess the value of the company.

Italian daily Il Foglio reported on Saturday that the two companies could present a deal on a 40% stake next week as they were very close to agreeing over some key terms, such as the role of Rome's Fiumicino airport as a hub for direct flights to Africa and some routes to the Americas.

Sources told Reuters on Jan. 12 that the Italian carrier was in contact with Lufthansa, British Airways and United States-based Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) for an equity partnership, adding that formal talks could start by the end of March.

Delta said on Jan. 13 it has no plans to invest in ITA.

The German government currently holds 14% of Lufthansa shares following a bailout at the height of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and aims to sell its stake by October 2023 at the latest.

The group was saved from bankruptcy by Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Belgium with 9 billion euros ($10.21 billion) in financial support approved by the European Commission.

A German economy ministry spokesperson declined to comment.

A deal with ITA would be subject to approval by the European Union's competition watchdog.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Germany's Lufthansa is looking to return to an operating profit this quarter as demand for travel rises with the easing of COVID-19 curbs and the airline raises ticket prices to offset higher costs.

The group, which owns the German airlines Lufthansa and Eurowings as well as Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines, doubled sales in the first quarter as more people started travelling again after two years of lockdowns and travel restrictions, although an overall first-quarter operating loss was bigger than analysts had expected.

"As the pandemic subsides, families, friends and business partners around the world are travelling to meet each other again. And I think the world is also coming to realize how important friendly personal contacts are," Chief Executive Carsten Spohr told a news conference.

The airline reported that first quarter revenue doubled from a year earlier to 5.36 billion euros ($5.68 billion), exceeding analysts' average forecast for sales of 5.12 billion euros, though it was not able to reduce losses as much as expected due to skyrocketing fuel prices amid Russia's war in Ukraine.

Lufthansa's adjusted loss before interest and taxes (EBIT) narrowed to 591 million euros in the first quarter, from a loss of 1.05 billion euros for the same period of 2021.

Analysts had on average expected the loss to narrow to 558 million euros according to a company-provided consensus.

However, the airline hopes to be able to pass some of the rising costs to customers with flight ticket price hikes.

"I don't see any problem with price increases affecting demand. Over the last six months, we have already pushed through a couple of price hikes. I think it's four already along the way," finance chief Remco Steenbergen told the conference.

"We live in a world where we see incredible inflation and price increases. We see that in commodities, hotels, rental cars. And I think price increases are significantly more in those other industries than for us," the CFO added.

The group also said its Swiss unit would terminate its 1.5 billion Swiss franc ($1.53 billion) state credit line ahead of time, closing another chapter in the state support that helped Lufthansa survive the impact of the pandemic.

Lufthansa's Franco-Dutch rival Air France-KLM reported a first-quarter core profit ahead of its own forecasts, citing successful oil price hedging in addition to the recovery in ticket sales.

London-based rival IAG (LON:ICAG), which owns airlines including British Airways, is due to publish first-quarter results on Friday.

Kolejne wpadki Lufthansy.

I to z ostatnich kilku dni.

W ostatni poniedziałek, 30 maja, Niemcy poinformowali o nowych restrykcjach wprowadzonych w przypadku najtańszej taryfy, tzw. I to niemało, bo 25 euro.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Deutsche Lufthansa (ETR:LHAG) said it was cancelling more than 1,000 flights ahead of a one-day walkout by ground staff scheduled for Wednesday, just as families across Germany head off on their summer holidays.

Strikes and staff shortages have already forced airlines including Lufthansa to cancel thousands of flights and caused hours-long queues at major airports, frustrating holidaymakers keen to travel after COVID-19 related lockdowns.

Germany's flagship carrier has cancelled 678 flights at its Frankfurt hub, most of which were scheduled for Wednesday, and 345 flights at Munich, Lufthansa said on Tuesday.

More than 130,000 passengers are affected, Lufthansa said, adding that there could be a few more cancellations and delays on Thursday and Friday, after the end of the strike called by labour union Verdi in pursuit of a 9.5% pay claim.

Lufthansa (ETR:LHAG) stock rose 5.8% after the German airline posted a return to operating profit in the second quarter, helped by booming demand for air cargo flights. Still, the carrier warned it would offer only around 80% of "pre-crisis" passenger capacity in the third quarter amid staffing shortages at airports and airlines.

W środę 15 lutego w Lufthansie doszło do awarii systemów informatycznych.
