Ford Debt Now Officially Junk

U.S. auto sales for the month of March are forecast to be 35.5% lower than in March 2019 and 23.4% below the February 2020 total. For the quarter, sales are forecast to fall by nearly 12% year over year.

That forecast, from industry analysts at Edmunds.com, was published on Wednesday, the same day that S&P Global Ratings downgraded its credit rating on Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) from BBB- to BB+. The new rating lowers Ford’s debt to junk status. Moody’s Investors Service also dropped Ford’s rating Wednesday, from Ba1 to Ba2, from junk to even junkier.

Now that two of the three ratings services have lowered their ratings on Ford debt, the company has attained official junk status. Fitch Ratings has Ford rated at BBB-, the firm’s lowest investment-grade rating. That probably won’t last much longer.

The new ratings follow by one day an announcement by Ford that it had agreed to borrow $15.4 billion in unused credit. Of the total, $13.4 billion came from its corporate credit facility and $2 billion from its revolving credit line. With this move, Ford has used up all its available borrowing.

S&P summed it up simply:

The coronavirus has delivered supply-side and demand-side shocks to light-vehicle demand. The decision to downgrade Ford Motor Co. investment grade to speculative grade reflects that the company’s credit metrics and competitive position became borderline for the investment-grade rating prior to the coronavirus outbreak, and the expected downturn in light-vehicle demand made it unlikely that Ford would maintain the required metrics.

Moody’s elaborated:

Ford remains vulnerable to shifts in market sentiment in these unprecedented operating conditions and the company is vulnerable to the outbreak continuing to spread. We regard the coronavirus outbreak as a social risk under our ESG framework, given the substantial implications for public health and safety. Today’s action reflects the impact on Ford of the breadth and severity of the shock, and the broad deterioration in credit quality it has triggered.

Earlier this week, Ford announced that assembly plants in India, Vietnam, Thailand and South Africa had shut down on March 21. The closures are expected to last “several weeks.” The duration of the closures will depend on the pandemic situation, national restrictions, supplier constraints and dealer stock requirements. Operations in the United States, Canada and Mexico had been idled a week earlier.

Thursday morning, Ford said it will restart operations at some North American plants on April 6. The Hermosillo plant will operate one shift beginning on that date, while the assembly plants in Dearborn, Kentucky, Kansas City and Ohio will restart on April 14. Several other manufacturing facilities are also planned for an April 14 restart. Ford also said it would continue to monitor “public health conditions as well as supplier readiness and will adjust plans if necessary.”

Ford pokazał elektrycznego mustanga mach-e w listopadzie ubiegłego roku, a pod koniec grudnia miał zapełnioną księgę zamówień na tzw. pulę first edition.

Pierwsze egzemplarze mają trafić do klientów pod koniec bieżącego roku. Producent od początku podkreślał, że SUV mach-e będzie jego pierwszym autem, które umożliwi w określonych sytuacjach drogowych prowadzenie bez użycia rąk. Teraz poinformował, że funkcja active drive assist nie będzie dostępna do czasu aktualizacji oprogramowania, co oznacza, że zadebiutuje dopiero w drugiej połowie 2021 r. Kierowcy, którzy zapragną oderwać ręce od kierownicy, będą musieli zakupić pakiet kamer i czujników.

Ford F-Series Sales Drop 22%

Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) sales in the U.S. are driven by the F-Series full-sized pickup. Most of these are the F-150 model, a new version of which was recently released. In the second quarter, Ford sold 180,825 F-Series vehicles against total sales across all models at 433,869. The ratio shows how critical F-Series sales are.

The F-Series did hold its own against the Ford total. Its sales dropped by 22.7%. Ford’s total sales were off 33.3%. Analysts believe that F-Series profit margins are high compared to many other Ford models, which should have helped Ford’s margins. Ford also claimed F-Series sales increased its market share within the category. Since Ford may not have known the figures from its competitors, it is worth asking where that figure came from.

Wall St. remains skeptical about Ford’s financial prospects. According to 24/7 Wall St.: “Ford Motor Co.’s senior unsecured debt is rated Ba2, two notches below investment grade, and also carries a negative outlook.” Its debt, therefore, is a highly risky investment. Ford’s stock is down over 40% in the last year, while the S&P is over 4% higher.

In March, Ford eliminated its dividend. This payout is likely critical to the net worth of the Ford family. That, in turn, raises the question of how long the Fords will give current management.

Ford’s struggles make the success of its new F-Series model all the more important. Launched just days ago, Ford management made it clear how essential its future will be. Jim Farley, Ford’s chief operating officer said: “Since 1948, our hardworking F-Series customers have trusted Ford to help them get the job done. F-150 is our flagship, it’s 100 percent assembled in America, and we hold ourselves to the highest standard to make sure our customers can get the job done and continue to make a difference in their communities.”

In the American car industry, truer words cannot be spoken.

Ford Motor (F) - Get Report reportedly plans a factory restructuring for its F-150 truck, the company’s most profitable vehicle.

Ford will temporarily close a factory in Michigan next month to put in machinery for a redesigned F-150 pickup that begins selling in 2021, Bloomberg reports.

Ford also is building a new facility next to its truck plant in its headquarters city, Dearborn, Mich., to produce electric F-150s, sources told the news service.

The company also is set to redo its Missouri pickup factory in October to get ready for the redesigned truck, after closing the Dearborn plant for two weeks of retooling starting Sept. 7, the Bloomberg sources said.

All this will slash F-150 production by about 100,000 vehicles this fall, according to Benchmark analyst Michael Ward, Bloomberg reports.

Ford said earlier this month that Jim Farley would succeed Jim Hackett as chief executive.

“Ford’s stock was just under $11 when Hackett took over in May 2017, so we think the move may lead to share-price appreciation in the short term,” Morningstar analyst David Whiston wrote in a commentary.

“For now, we are leaving our fair value [$8] in place due to Ford’s high debt load," the analyst said.

"We want to see Farley produce meaningful improvement, which may take until next year due to launches of the new-generation F-150 late this year and three Broncos coming in 2020-21.”

On the plus side, “we look forward to seeing what Farley brings as a CEO, and we expect a more direct communication style than Hackett’s,” Whiston said.

Ford shares recently traded at $6.92, up 3.8%. They have dropped 28% this year.

Koncern Ford Motor przenosi na przyszły rok produkcję modelu Escape. Decyzja związana jest z problemami z akumulatorami jakie ujawniły się w modelu Kuga, z którym Escape ma dzielić część technologii, donosi Reuters.

We wrześniu amerykański producent zmuszony był wezwać do serwisów 20,5 tys. Kug typu PHEV w Europie i zawiesić sprzedaż tego modelu z powodu ujawnionego zagrożenia związanego z możliwością wybuchu pożaru spowodowanego wadą zastosowanych akumulatorów.

Fabryki w Camaçari i Taubaté mają natychmiast wstrzymać produkcję. Fabryka w Horizonte ma utrzymać produkcję do czwartego kwartału.

Amerykańska agencja bezpieczeństwa ruchu drogowego (NHTSA) nakazała koncernowi Ford wezwanie do serwisów i naprawę w USA około 3 milionów pojazdów w związku z potencjalnie wadliwymi poduszkami powietrznymi japońskiej firmy Takata.

NHTS poinformowała we wtorek, że odrzuciła wniosek Forda, drugiego co do wielkości producenta samochodów w Stanach Zjednoczonych, o zwolnienie z konieczności wycofania samochodów do serwisów i dała koncernowi 30 dni na przedstawienie planu przeprowadzenia w USA akcji naprawczej.
