Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (NYSE: HMC) sells a lot of its compact CR-V SUV in the United States. In the first nine months of this year, for example, the CR-V is the company’s best selling model, with sales totaling 277,621. In 2017, the company sold 377,895 CR-V, edging out the compact Civic as Honda’s top seller, a position the CR-V is consolidating this year.

According to a report last week at Consumer Reports, Honda has a serious problem with the 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder turbo engine sold in more than 500,000 CR-Vs: gasoline is leaking into the engine’s oil causes the engine to stall or lose power during short trips or low-speed driving, especially in cold weather. Worse, it damages the engine by diluting the oil, making it less effective at lubricating the engines moving parts.

Honda is slowing production of Accord and Civic cars as U.S. buyers continue to favor SUVs and trucks.

The Japanese automaker said that it will temporarily idle a second-shift production line in August at its Marysville, Ohio, assembly plant, in part to prepare the factory to produce future electric vehicles. The shift is expected to resume production in several years.

The line being shut down produces about 55,000 vehicles a year, most of which are Accord sedans, Honda said. In addition, some production of the CR-V small SUV in Marysville will go to a factory in Greensburg, Indiana, where production of the compact Civic will be reduced.

While production is slowed in Marysville, Honda will update the plant's manufacturing capability to prepare for new technology including electric vehicles, Honda said in a statement.

There will be no layoffs, a company spokeswoman said, but Honda will offer voluntary buyouts to some employees.

The reduction also will affect production at engine and transmission plants in Ohio, Honda said.

Sales of the Accord this year are up 4.6% through March but fell nearly 10% last year. Civic sales are down nearly 5% so far this year to 78,185, according to Autodata Corp. They fell almost 14% last year.

CR-V sales, however, are up 6.4% through March to 87,280. Trucks and SUVs have made up almost 70% of U.S. new vehicle sales this year.

Honda reports fiscal quarterly loss

Honda Motor Co reported a loss for January-March Wednesday, despite growing sales, as an unfavorable exchange rate, income tax expenses and other costs hurt results.

Honda reported a 13 billion yen ($118 million) loss for the fiscal fourth quarter, a reversal from a 107.7 billion yen profit the previous fiscal year.

Quarterly sales rose 3% to 4.05 trillion yen ($37 billion).

For the fiscal year through March, Honda recorded a 610.3 billion yen ($5.5 billion) profit, down 42% on year because of an absence of a U.S. tax break, which boosted earnings the previous year.

Chief Executive Takahiro Hachigo announced Honda will streamline its product offerings, consolidating model variations, and increase parts-sharing to cut costs, with the first model developed under the new "architecture" launching next year.

Inter-regional cooperation will reduce manpower needs by a third, which will instead be used for research and development, he said.

In North America, a critical market for the Japanese automakers, Honda will reduce model options to realize growth, he added.

For the fiscal year through March 2020, Honda expects a 665 billion yen ($6 billion) profit, up 9 percent.

Honda plans to launch 'level 3' autonomous vehicle this year

Honda Motor Co. is preparing this year to become the first Japanese automaker to launch a vehicle with Level 3 autonomous driving, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Level 3 autonomy frees up the driver to engage in different activities, such as reading or watching TV. Honda’s car is expected to offer such hands-off capabilities only in slow traffic on congested expressways, the sources said.

Audi AG already sells cars capable of Level 3 autonomy in Japan, with self-driving available at busy times on expressways.

Honda’s car will likely be introduced after Japanese carmakers jointly test autonomous vehicle operations on public roads in Tokyo around July, they said.

In Level 3, drivers need to be available to take full control of the vehicle in case of emergency.

At Level 4, no driver interaction is needed, though the controls are available.

At Level 5, vehicles will no longer need drivers because they will not have steering wheels or other conventional car equipment.
