Volvo Cars wznawia plany wejścia na giełdę, trzy lata po tym, jak chińscy właściciele szwedzkiego producenta samochodów premium wycofali się z IPO z powodu obaw związanych z wojną handlową. Zarząd Volvo w środę wieczorem powiedział, że rozważy możliwość wejścia na giełdę w Sztokholmie jeszcze w tym roku, ale ostateczna decyzja będzie uzależniona od "warunków rynkowych".

Renault to explore hybrid vehicles with Geely

BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Renault (PA:RENA) and Geely said on Monday they would jointly develop petrol-electric hybrid vehicles for China and South Korean markets, as the French automaker revives plans for the world's biggest car market after exiting a Chinese venture last year.

In China, where over 25 million vehicles were sold last year, Renault will use Geely's newly-launched hybrid car system to jointly develop vehicles under the Renault brand, the companies said in a statement. They did not disclose production details for the vehicles.

This is the first move since Weiming Soh, a former senior Volkswagen (DE:VOWG_p) executive, became Renault's China chief this year.

Last year, Renault quit its main China joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group due to poor sales. Currently it is making cars and vans at three tie-ups in China.

In South Korea, where Renault is making cars at Renault Samsung (KS:005930) Motors venture, Renault will explore making cars with Geely's car technologies, they said, adding they will focus on other Asian markets.

Automakers are keen to use petrol-electric hybrid vehicles, which have better fuel efficiency than all-petrol counterparts, to meet increasingly tougher auto regulations around the world. These hybrid vehicles, which drivers cannot charge with electricity directly, are different from plug-in hybrid cars.

China has some of the world's strictest rules regarding the production of greenhouse gas-emitting vehicles, as it battles unhealthy levels of air pollution in its crowded cities.

Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda have long been developing and making hybrid cars but Chinese automakers including Geely, owner of Volvo Cars and has a 9.7% stake in Daimler AG (DE:DAIGn), and Great Wall are following and rolled out their hybrid car technologies in the past year.

Last year, Geely and Daimler (OTC:DDAIF) said China could emerge as a manufacturing and export hub for hybrid powertrains jointly developed for Volvo and Mercedes-Benz cars.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese automaker Geely has hired Stefan Sielaff, the former design chief of British luxury brand Bentley, as China's manufacturers increasingly turn to new styles to boost sales in the world's biggest car market.

Sielaff, who also worked for Volkswagen AG (OTC:VWAGY) and Daimler AG (DE:DAIGn), will be based in Sweden's Gothenburg and lead design the domestic Geely, Zeekr, Lynk & Co and Geometry brands, the company said in a statement.

He will not manage design for its Volvo and Polestar brands.

Chinese car companies historically rolled out models that looked similar to foreign brands. But as sales increased, many - including Geely, Great Wall and BYD - built up their own studios, usually led by international designers, to create fresh designs.

Hangzhou-based Geely, which owns Volvo Cars and a 9.7% stake in Daimler (OTC:DDAIF), has turned to more sporty designs to boost car prices. Sales at rival Changan jumped this year thanks to its more futuristic designs, while Great Wall's off-road sports utility vehicles are also popular.

The increased focus comes as auto design is becoming more challanging, with the move to electric cars and smarter driving systems that include more exterior sensors.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - China's Geely Holding is in advanced discussions with banks to list its Volvo Cars unit in the coming weeks, three sources told Reuters, in what is expected to be one of Europe's biggest initial public offerings (IPOs) this year.

Volvo Cars is aiming for a valuation of about $20 billion in the planned Stockholm listing, the sources said, with one saying the launch was pencilled in for the end of September.

Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) and SEB are leading the transaction, while other banks including BNP Paribas, Carnegie and HSBC are also involved in the deal, the sources added.

Volvo Cars declined to comment. Geely did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment outside normal business hours in China. SEB and Goldman Sachs declined to comment. The other banks were not immediately available.

Geely, which bought Volvo from Ford Motor (NYSE:F) https://www.reuters.com/business/autos- ... 2021-09-02 more than a decade ago in the biggest acquisition by a Chinese firm of a foreign car maker, sought to float shares in the Swedish firm in 2018 but then pulled the deal citing trade tensions and a downturn in automotive stocks.

Traditional carmakers have fallen out of favour in recent years, as Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has risen to be one of the world's most valuable companies, putting the focus on electric vehicles.

Many European firms have pivoted toward the electric sector, including Volvo Cars which aims to only make fully electric cars by 2030 and owns a 49.5% stake in electric car maker Polestar.

VALUATION

Gothenburg-based Volvo Cars aims to secure a valuation of roughly $20 billion, one of the sources said, while another mentioned a possible range of $20 billion to $30 billion.

A third source suggested a $16 billion valuation was more realistic, citing the firm's revenue outlook.

A $20 billion valuation for Volvo would be equivalent to six to seven times its earnings, a level some analysts say is high although it would put it in line with rivals Daimler (OTC:DDAIF) and BMW. Tesla's valuation is more than 70 times.

NordLB's automotive analyst Frank Schwope estimated a valuation range of $10 billion to $15 billion.

"The strong margins seen in the first half of 2021 are unlikely sustainable as the market benefited from a strong post-pandemic rebound that is unlikely to continue," Schwope said.

For Geely's founder Li Shufu, who bought Volvo for $1.8 billion, the listing is a milestone on the road to transport of the future, where cars are part of an electrified network of mobility services generating data and business opportunities.

A slew of startups have tapped into the investor frenzy for electric vehicles this year. Nordea Chief Investment Officer John Hernander said the bank was interested in buying Volvo shares if a big enough chunk of the company was sold to keep liquidity high.

"That is key. We and many others have been really disappointed in the low liquidity in Traton," he said, drawing parallels to the 2019 IPO of the truck unit, in which owner Volkswagen (DE:VOWG_p) floated 11.5% of the shares.

Volvo warned this month that sales volumes in the second half of 2021 could fall year on year after it had been forced to cut production due to material shortages.
