Nestle unveils $100 million Colombia investment to grow capacity

BOGOTA (Reuters) -Global food giant Nestle is set to invest $100 million over the next three years in its Colombian operations, President Gustavo Petro said on Friday, part of his push to boost industrialization.

The Colombian leader outlined the announcement in a post on Twitter late Friday.

The new investment plan builds on $13 million already spent by the world's largest food and beverage producer in the South American country, the government said in a statement, with the new funds to be focused on increasing production capacity and updating technology.

"Industrializing Colombia is essential if we want to get out of poverty," Petro wrote on Twitter.

Nestle did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

But the statement quoted its top executive for Latin America, Laurent Freixe, as saying that the plan will allow the company to strengthen its product portfolio as well as align with some of the government's priorities, such as promoting youth employment.

Nestle plans price hikes after costs eat into profits

ZURICH/LONDON (Reuters) -The world's biggest food group Nestle will lift prices again this year, Chief Executive Mark Schneider said on Thursday, after more costly ingredients contributed to making its 2022 profit miss market forecasts.

Rivals have said they anticipate a more positive pricing outlook for shoppers in 2023. But Schneider said further rises were necessary to offset the impact of increased commodity prices. That is bad news for consumers, whose spending power has already been hit by inflation at multi-decade highs.

The maker of Nescafe instant coffee and KitKat chocolate bars raised prices by 8.2% last year, but that did not fully offset the impact of increased costs for ingredients on margins.

"Our gross margin is down about 260 basis points - that is massive. That is after all the pricing we have done in 2022," Schneider told reporters.

Consumer goods producers increased prices to cope with surging costs for almost all raw materials after Russia's invasion of Ukraine compounded pandemic-related supply chain logjams.

But they face a challenge in how much they can increase prices before even affluent shoppers decide enough is enough.

Unilever (NYSE:UL) said last week it would continue to raise prices for its detergents, soaps and packaged food to offset rising input costs, but would ease those hikes in the second half of 2023.

Snack and soda maker Pepsico (NASDAQ:PEP) said last week it would stop raising prices after multiple hikes last year helped it beat analyst estimates for profit and sales.

'MIXED EMOTIONS' AFTER RARE MISS

Barclays (LON:BARC) analyst Warren Ackerman expects "almost all" of the lower-than-estimated volumes would be the result of Nestle rethinking the variety of products it makes and supply chain constraints, he said on Thursday.

The question will be how much of the volume weakness persists from these factors into the first half of the year, he added.

Schneider said that, in most cases, the impact to volumes did not signal consumers trading down to cheaper private label products.

Net profit fell to 9.3 billion Swiss francs, missing expectations for 11.6 billion francs, although the consensus forecast did not account for the impairment at Nestle's Aimmune subsidiary last year, analysts said.

"Nestle rarely misses and that was a miss," said Bernstein analyst Bruno Monteyne.

Shares in Nestle were down 2.8% in mid-afternoon trading.

Nestle said it targeted organic sales growth - which cuts out the impact of currency moves and acquisitions - in a range of 6-8% in 2023.

During 2022 the company's reported sales increased 8.4% to 94.4 billion Swiss francs ($102.31 billion).

ZURICH (Reuters) – Nestle widzi złagodzenie presji cenowej wynikającej z surowców, transportu i kosztów opakowań, powiedział prezes Paul Bulcke, dodając, że firma nadal będzie podnosić ceny.

W trzecim i czwartym kwartale ubiegłego roku producent batonów czekoladowych KitKat i kawy rozpuszczalnej Nescafe odnotował niższe wolumeny sprzedaży, ponieważ konsumenci ograniczyli środki pieniężne.

"To ważne, ponieważ w przeciwnym razie stracimy impet rynkowy".

Nestle beats quarterly sales estimates with price hikes

LONDON (Reuters) - Nestle reported slightly better-than-expected first-quarter sales on Tuesday, as the world's biggest packaged food company increased prices to offset weak sales volumes.

The Swiss company, which makes KitKat chocolate bars, Nescafe coffee and Maggi stock cubes, said sales rose 5.6% to 23.5 billion Swiss francs ($26.48 billion) in the quarter ended March 31, beating the average estimate of 23.27 billion francs in a company-provided analyst consensus.

The maker of Purina pet food increased its prices by 9.8% during the quarter but sales volumes - which the company calls real internal growth - fell 0.5%.

Confectionary and pet food sales were bright spots, with volumes rising in both categories.

Nestle shares were up 1.5% at a one-year high in morning trade. Analysts and investors, including Bernstein, called the results "a strong start to the year".

"A very resilient set of numbers that underlines the strong results we've seen so far from staples in general, for instance, P&G and Coca Cola last week," said Richard Saldanha, a fund manager at Nestle investor Aviva (LON:AV), said.

"The concern going into this year was whether higher prices would have a major negative impact on volumes - but that doesn't seem to have been the case so far."

Consumer goods companies from Unilever (NYSE:UL) to P&G have raised prices sharply over the last two years to battle rising commodities and supply chain costs.

Margins have been squeezed by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which sent energy prices to record highs.

Some shoppers - particularly those in Europe - have balked at higher prices, prompting lower sales volumes across the industry as people buy less or trade down to cheaper brands.

Yet many consumer companies are still seeing resilient demand, especially from U.S. shoppers.

Rival Unilever, which posts results later this week, said earlier this year that the industry was past "peak inflation, but not yet past peak pricing".

Food price inflation will start easing in the second half of this year, French ECB policymaker Francois Villeroy de Galhau said on Tuesday, saying this is when a decrease in crop prices will bear fruit.

However, sugar producer Associated British Foods (OTC:ASBFY) warned on Tuesday that sugar could be an exception to the easing of prices in the second half.

It's unclear whether companies will prioritise volume sales growth by passing on declining costs to consumers or look to protect margins. Several investors have said consumer goods companies should ease price increases as supply chain costs decline, mindful of protecting market share.

P&G, which makes Tide laundry detergent, Pampers diapers and Gillette razors, last week reported a 10% increase in average prices across its categories during the quarter, and a 3% decline in volumes.

Paneuropejski indeks żywności, napojów i tytoniu spadł o 1,7%.
