Walmart Moves To Strengthen Position In Hot Foreign Market Vs. Amazon

Walmart (WMT) is reorganizing its footprint in India, one of the most hotly contested markets among international and domestic companies, allowing it to better compete against Amazon (AMZN) and others. Walmart stock was flat.

The U.S. retail giant is selling its Indian wholesale business to Flipkart, the e-commerce firm it controls in the world's second-most populous country.

Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed. But the deal will see Walmart India employees join Flipkart, which will also launch a digital marketplace called Flipkart Wholesale next month.

That should allow Walmart to get around a key obstacle in India, which bars foreign investors from controlling and marketing their own inventory on their e-commerce platforms.

Walmart bought a controlling stake in Flipkart for $16 billion in 2018. Meanwhile, Walmart India has been running wholesale stores in the country under its Best Price brand since 2009. But despite having 28 wholesale stores, two fulfillment centers and more than 1.5 million members, the business has yet to turn a profit, according to Reuters.

E-commerce players including Amazon are trying to woo India's mom-and-pop stores, as they make up such a large part of the economy. Such retailers make up the bulk of Best Price's customers.

Flipkart will be looking to harness Walmart's wholesale business to work more closely with independent retailers in India. It is looking to offer a wider variety of products and services such as financing.

But Flipkart is not just facing off against Amazon. Local online grocery upstart JioMart has raised around $20 billion for its digital arm. It is backed by Indian tycoon Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries.

Walmart Stock Slips As It Delays Amazon Prime Competitor Once Again

Walmart (WMT) has reportedly again decided to delay the launch of its membership program designed to compete with Amazon (AMZN) Prime. Walmart stock slipped.

It is unclear when the Walmart+ service, which was said to have been gearing up for a July launch, will now go live, according to Recode. It had previously been slated to launch in March or April, but was pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Membership will cost $98 a year. In return, the service will give members same-day delivery, deals on products before others customers, and fuel discounts at Walmart's gas stations. It will initially serve as a rebranded version of its Delivery Unlimited service, which also costs $98 per year.

The scope of the Walmart+ launch — whether it would launch regionally or nationwide — remains unclear.

Walmart declined to comment on the Recode report.

Walmart Chases E-Commerce Growth
Walmart+ is the chain's latest effort to become more of an e-commerce company. The growth of online shopping has been remolding customers' habits, and the Covid-19 lockdowns have been accelerating the trend.

Government filings show that Walmart is trying to trademark the terms "Walmart Plus" and "Walmart +".

Filings dated June 12 describe the services associated with those terms including "retail and online grocery store services," "early access to retail discounts and offers," and a loyalty program "featuring a membership for unlimited free shipping of consumer goods purchased from retailer."

Walmart Stock
Walmart stock fell 1.7% to 129.44 on the stock market today. The stock slipped further from a 132.09 buy point following a breakout from a double-bottom base, MarketSmith analysis shows. The Dow Jones stock is still above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages.

The relative strength line for Walmart stock is slipping again after a rally attempt stalled. It had previously shot up amid the coronavirus crash, before sliding from April through early June.

Among rivals, Amazon stock was up 1.3%, Target (TGT) lost 0.5%, and Costco Wholesale (COST) dipped 0.4%.

Będą czynne do godz. 22 zamiast do godz. 20:30.

Walmart Earnings Strong As E-Commerce Soars; WMT Stock Erases Gain As Sales 'Normalize'

Walmart (WMT) blew past second-quarter forecasts early Tuesday as the Dow Jones retail giant capitalizes on the pandemic shifts in consumer spending, but said sales have started to "normalize" as the coronavirus stimulus fades. WMT stock initially jumped early Tuesday, but erased gains after breaking out Monday.

Walmart Earnings
Estimates: Wall Street expected Walmart earnings per share to slip 6% to $1.20, according to Zacks Investment Research. Revenue was seen rising 3% to $134.23 billion.

Same-store sales, excluding gas and foreign exchange impact, were seen rising 6.2% overall, according to Consensus Metrix. They were expected to rise 6.4% at Walmart U.S. stores and 6.2% at Sam's Club outlets.

Results: Walmart earnings per share rose to $1.56 a share. Total revenue climbed 5.6% to $137.74 billion. Walmart U.S. same-store sales leapt 9.3%, with e-commerce sales spiking 97%. Sam's Club same-store sales grew 13.3%, with e-commerce sales up 39%.

"Q2 sales started strong, both in-store and online, particularly in general merchandise, helped by government stimulus spending," Walmart said in its earnings presentation. Grocery sales had another strong quarter. As stimulus funds tapered off, sales started to normalize, but July comps still grew more than four percent."

The discount giant did not give guidance as uncertainty remains.

Will Walmart Continue to Post Big Earnings If Federal Stimulus Spending Ends?

Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) reported second-quarter fiscal year 2021 results before markets opened Tuesday. The retailing giant posted adjusted diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.56 on net sales of $137.7 billion, including membership fees in Sam’s Club. In the same period a year ago, Walmart reported EPS of $1.27 on sales of $130.4 billion. Second-quarter results also compare to consensus estimates for EPS of $1.25 and $131.8 billion in sales.

Second-quarter results were “significantly affected” by the COVID-19 pandemic, which the company said “ncreased demand for products across multiple categories [and] led to strong top-line and gross margin results.”

Same-store sales in the company’s U.S. Walmart stores rose by 9.3% and Sam’s Club comparable sales increased by 13.3%. International sales dipped by 6.8% due to government-ordered closures in India, Africa and Central America.

U.S. e-commerce sales nearly doubled (up 97%) at Walmart and rose 39% at Sam’s Club. Memberships at Sam’s Club rose by 60% and membership income reached its highest point in more than five years.

Free cash flow more than doubled year over year, from $6.3 billion to $15.4 billion. Adjusted EPS excluded a gain of $0.89 per share on the company’s equity investment of JD.com, a restructuring charge of $0.10 and a $0.08 charge for a tax item.

The company did not provide guidance, but consensus third-quarter estimates call for EPS of $1.15 and sales of $131.8 billion. For the full year, analysts have projected EPS of $5.01 on revenue of $547.07 billion.

What Walmart did say in a presentation accompanying the earnings release was that second-quarter sales “started strong, both in-store and online, … helped by government stimulus spending.” The company also noted that grocery sales were strong throughout the quarter. Then, this bit: “As stimulus funds tapered off, sales started to normalize, but July comps still grew more than four percent.”

The U.S. economic rebound began in May with a month-over-month gain of a record 18.2% as the first of the federal stimulus checks reached American consumers. Sales slipped a bit in June, posting a gain of 8.4%. In July, sales rose by just 1.2% month over month.

That downward trend in July consumer spending was also noted by Home Depot when it reported second-quarter earnings this morning.

Walmart’s stock traded up less than 0.1% in Tuesday’s premarket, at $135.74 in a 52-week range of $102.00 to $136.13. The high was posted Monday, and the consensus price target on the stock is $139.16.

Walmart idzie po TikToka razem z Microsoftem

Walmart, właściciel największej w USA i na świecie sieci supermarketów, połączy siły z Microsoftem w sprawie przejęcia amerykańskiego biznesu TikTok.

Walmart oczekuje, że przejęcie serwisu do wideoblogowania, który ma ok. 80 mln użytkowników w USA, da mu dostęp do młodszych Amerykanów, pozwoli zbudować rynek tzw. strony trzeciej i wzmocni potencjał reklamowy.

Administracja Donalda Trumpa nakazała ByteDance, chińskiemu właścicielowi TikToka sprzedać amerykański biznes spółki. W innym przypadku grozi wprowadzeniem zakazu używania aplikacji w USA.

Walmart Stock Surges On Walmart+ Launch, But Analyst Cites Amazon Advantages

Walmart stock popped on Tuesday after the retail chain said that all of its customers would be able to sign up for its Walmart+ membership program on Sept. 15, giving shoppers a chance to access a digital ordering and delivery service often likened to Amazon Prime.

However, one analyst cautioned against such comparisons, noting that many Amazon Prime perks centered more on video, music and gaming — offerings that might help Amazon's membership service stand out as cheap delivery becomes more common.

The launch of Walmart+ this month comes after the big-box and online retailer delayed debuting the service during the year. The company put off launching the service due to the coronavirus pandemic, occasionally denting Walmart stock in the process.

Free Delivery, In-Store Scanning
Walmart on Tuesday said that Walmart+ would cost $98 a year, or $12.95 a month, with a 15-day free trial, according to a release. The program's benefits can be used, in one way or another, at more than 4,700 stores.

The service will offer free delivery on items, at in-store prices, with 2,700 stores capable of offering same-day delivery. The Walmart+ service will fold in subscribers to Walmart's Delivery Unlimited subscription delivery service.

The new program will also give members fuel discounts of up to 5 cents a gallon in nearly 2,000 Walmart and other stores. Those discounts will also apply Sam's Club locations soon.

Members will also be able to use Walmart's Scan & Go app, which allows customers to scan their own items while they shop and use Walmart Pay, its touch-free payment service, to check out at the register.

Walmart+ marks the company's latest investment in delivery and digital ordering, moves that helped shield Walmart stock from the hit other retail stocks took this year as the pandemic took hold. Executives in other industries have said the crisis, which has kept many people indoors, has helped speed the adoption of online ordering and delivery.

Walmart's U.S. e-commerce sales jumped 97% during the second quarter amid those shifts. But management said sales had started to "normalize" after government stimulus aid fell away.

"Walmart's Walmart+ program will help retain new customers that it has gained as a result of COVID-19, as well as deepen relationships with long-standing customers, and as such is a positive for the company," Moody's analyst Charlie O'Shea said in an emailed comments.

Walmart Stock
Walmart stock rallied 6% to 147.18 in the stock market today, hitting a record high. Shares are extended from a double-bottom base buy point of 132.09 as well as an alternative entry at 134.23. WMT stock has been rallying over the past week as it teams up with fellow Dow Jones giant Microsoft (MSFT) on a bid for the U.S. operations of TikTok.

Walmart stock has an 86 Composite Rating and an 81 EPS Rating. IBD generally advises investors to focus on stocks with Composite Ratings in the 90s.

The relative strength line, which compares the stock's performance to the S&P 500, has been choppy.

Amazon stock climbed 1.1%, also to a new high.

Comparison To Amazon Prime, 'Commoditized' Delivery
By comparison, Amazon Prime costs $12.99 a month. If members want to be charged yearly, the cost is $119. Prime Video costs $8.99 a month as a stand-alone offering.

Prime also gives customers free delivery services — either within two days or on the same day of ordering — for some items and some areas. The service also gives customers discounts at Whole Foods Market, which Amazon owns.

The Amazon Prime ecosystem also offers access to streaming video and music. O'Shea said that was a key difference between Prime and Walmart+.

"It should not be considered a direct 'competitor' to Amazon Prime due to its focus on shopping and shipping/delivery benefits versus Prime's significant content offerings," O'Shea said of Walmart+.

Amazon's content offerings, he argued, "are a significant portion of the value proposition for Prime as fast or discounted delivery is becoming increasingly commoditized as it is easily replicable."

Walmart Plus is Ready to Battle with Amazon Prime.

Shares of Walmart (WMT) shot higher by 6% on Tuesday on word that the retailer's new subscription service, Walmart Plus, would be rolled out on September 15th. Walmart Plus is priced at $86 per year. Walmart is undercutting competitor Amazon, which charges $119 annually for its Prime subscription service.

Walmart is a candidate to purchase popular social media site TikTok, which I believe would be a brilliant move.

Walmart's chart is exploding higher from a cup and handle formation. Note the high volume over the past week. This is an indication that institutional money is pushing Walmart higher.

Obrazek

Why is Walmart Plus such a big deal? According to Consumer Intelligence Retail Partners, Amazon's Prime loyalty program has 112 million members.

The paid membership program essentially locks in members. Discounts and free delivery discourage consumers from buying similar items from competing retailers, and Amazon's liberal policy on returns seals the deal.

Product returns are the ace hidden up Walmart's sleeve. According to a survey by UPS, 60% of consumers would rather return a product to a physical store location. Walmart has over 5000 locations in the U.S. alone.

Why is this good news for Walmart? That same UPS survey says that 70% of consumers who return items to a physical location make additional purchases. This means that Walmart Plus won't just drive online sales higher, but brick and mortar sales as well.

Walmart wywęszył okazję i obliczył duży potencjał w posiadaniu medium społecznościowego, z którego w USA korzysta 100 milionów użytkowników i przy współpracy z Microsoft (MSFT), chce złożyć ofertę kupna.

Aplikacja pozwala również na omijanie kolejek w sklepach Walmart dzięki funkcji "scan and go".

Walmart Figures It Doesn't Need a British Grocery Chain After All

After 20 years in the U.K. grocery business, Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) has decided to pull out. The U.S. mega-retailer announced Friday that it had sold the Asda grocery chain to a consortium of the Issa brothers (Zuber and Mohsin) and U.K.-based private equity firm TDR Capital.

The transaction price of £6.8 billion ($8.78 billion) is in line with an April estimate that Walmart was seeking a price of around £7 (about $8.6 billion at the then-current exchange rate). Walmart also will retain a stake in Asda of undisclosed size. Walmart acquired Asda, the U.K.’s third-largest grocery chain, in 1999 for £6.7 billion.

In a separate announcement, Walmart said it would recognize a noncash, after-tax loss of approximately $2.5 billion in fiscal 2021 (which ends in January). The company also expects an earnings per share hit of $0.25 in the first full year after the transaction is completed, reflecting the lack of net income from Asda. Walmart noted that it would determine how to use the cash it receives from the sale, but the company expects the choice to offset at least partially the hit to earnings per share.

In a joint announcement, Walmart said the transaction would be “debt-free and cash-free.” The term has a relatively simple definition: Walmart will pay off all Asda’s debt and pocket all Asda’s excess cash before the transaction is completed. It often gets much less simple, of course.

The transaction is expected to be completed in the first half of 2021, after passing regulatory approvals.

In 2018, Walmart announced that it would sell Asda to the U.K.’s second-largest grocery chain, Sainsbury, for $3 billion in cash and a 42% stake in the combined British company. At the time, Walmart was more interested in completing a much larger deal with India’s Flipkart. U.K. regulators rejected the Asda deal in late 2019 on anti-competitive grounds.

Early Friday, Walmart stock traded down fractionally to $142.26, in a 52-week range of $102.00 to $151.33. The stock’s consensus price target is $146.09.
