Walmart Inc. (NYSE:WMT) shares dropped nearly 9% after-hours Monday after the retailer cut its Q2 and full 2023-year guidance primarily due to pricing actions aimed to improve inventory levels at Walmart and Sam’s Club in the U.S. and mix of sales.

Consolidated net sales growth for the Q2 and 2023 is expected to be about 7.5% and 4.5% (about 5.5% excluding divestitures), respectively. Net sales include a headwind from the currency of about $1 billion in Q2. The company anticipates a $1.8 billion headwind in H2/23.

Operating income for Q2 and 2023 is expected to decline 13-14% and 11-13% (10 to 12% excluding divestitures), respectively. The operating margin is expected to be about 4.2% for Q2 and 3.8%-3.9% for 2023.

Adjusted EPS for Q2 and 2023 is expected to decline around 8-9% and 11-13% (10 to 12% excluding divestitures), respectively.

The increasing levels of food and fuel inflation are affecting customers’ ability to spend on general merchandise categories and requiring more markdowns to move through the inventory, particularly apparel. Q2 Comp sales for Walmart U.S., excluding fuel, are expected to be about 6%, higher than previously expected with a heavier mix of food and consumables, which is negatively affecting the gross margin rate. The company reiterated its expectations for Walmart U.S. comp sales growth, excluding fuel, of about 3% in H2/23.

The company is expected to provide further details on business performance and its outlook for the full 2023-year when it reports Q2 earnings results on Aug. 16.

Walmart (NYSE:WMT) slipped more than 7% after cutting its outlook on profit as inflation puts the squeeze on consumer spending. The retailer forecast earnings per share to decline between 11% to 13%, down from “flat” previously.

The gloomy update from Walmart is “clearly telling you that [economic] conditions are deteriorating, which is why the market has sold off a lot today,” Will Rhind, founder and CEO, GraniteShares told Investing.com in an interview on Tuesday.

“Consumers are getting squeezed because the cost of goods and services is rising and the cost to borrow money is going up," he added.

Fresh fears about the strength of the consumer pressured other retailers to fall sharply, led by Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), DLTR, ROST and TGT.

As well as the profit warning from Walmart, data showing a slip in consumer confidence added to concerns about a slowing economic growth just as the Federal Reserve kicks off its two-day meeting.

Akcje przedsiębiorstwa spadły we wtorek o 7,6 procent.

W lutym przedstawiciele Walmartu prognozowali nawet niewielki wzrost dochodów. Rzeczywistość okazała się brutalna i stos pieniędzy maleje w zawrotnym tempie.

Walmart Inc. (NYSE:WMT), the biggest U.S. retailer, turned in a surprisingly strong report, with profit that didn’t fall as much as feared. It reiterated its outlook for the rest of the year. Inflation is forcing shoppers to make tradeoffs and opt for lower-priced items, and that trend continues, though falling gasoline prices is easing some concerns about consumer spending. Walmart shares rose 5%.

(Reuters) -Walmart Inc has agreed to pay $215 million to resolve claims its pharmacies fueled an epidemic of opioid addiction in Florida, the state's attorney general announced on Thursday.

As part of the deal, Walmart (NYSE:WMT) has also agreed to dispense 672,000 treatment kits with the anti-overdose drug naloxone to first responders in the state.

"I'm grateful for Walmart stepping up and agreeing to partner with the state to provide law enforcement and first responders with much-needed naloxone," Attorney General Ashley Moody said in a statement. "This will greatly help in our continuing mission to end the opioid crisis and save lives."

The state has now secured a total of $3.2 billion through legal action to help fight the opioid crisis, according to Moody's (NYSE:MCO) office. That includes recent settlements of $683 million with Walgreens Boots Alliance (NASDAQ:WBA), $484 million with CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) and a combined $394 million with three drugmakers.

"This partnership is the latest chapter in Walmart's commitment to fight the opioid crisis," Walmart spokesperson Randy Hargrove said in a statement.

The retailer, which did not admit any wrongdoing, previously settled opioid-related claims brought by West Virginia for $65 million and New Mexico for an undisclosed sum. It was also ordered in August to pay a combined $650.6 million with Walgreens and CVS to two Ohio counties.

The U.S. opioid crisis has caused more than 500,000 overdose deaths over two decades, according to federal government data. More than 3,300 lawsuits have been filed accusing drugmakers, distributors and pharmacy chains of fueling the crisis.

Major drugmakers and distributors have reached nationwide settlements worth more than $30 billion altogether, resolving most lawsuits against them, while pharmacy operators have continued to litigate or settle cases one by one.

https://wiadomosci.onet.pl/swiat/chesap ... ry/ltewbj1

(Reuters) -A Walmart (NYSE:WMT) supervisor who killed six co-workers at a store in Virginia on Tuesday bought a handgun the day of the shooting and left a rambling note on his cellphone in which he railed against other employees who he felt had mocked and betrayed him.

Information on the firearm purchase and note was released by the city of Chesapeake on Friday in an update on its investigation into the shooting, in which 31-year-old Andre Bing opened fire on other workers before turning the gun on himself.

In a separate shooting on Friday, Walmart said it had evacuated a Supercenter in Lumberton, North Carolina. One person was shot at the store and police were searching for a suspect, according to a local CBS affiliate. The Lumberton police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Also Friday, law enforcement officials were investigating threatening phone calls made to two Walmart stores in Virginia Beach, about 20 miles east of Chesapeake, according to police. Known as Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving has historically been the busiest shopping day of the year.

Bing, an overnight shift team leader, was armed with a handgun when he shot some but not all of the employees assembled in a break room prior to their shift on Tuesday, witnesses and police said, raising the prospect he targeted individuals.

In a search of his home, investigators found ammunition and various items related to the 9mm handgun, including a receipt, according to the update from Chesapeake, a city of 251,000 people about 200 miles (320 km) south of Washington.

"The gun was legally purchased from a local store on the morning of Tuesday Nov. 22. He had no criminal history," the city said in a statement on Friday.

In his note, Bing made reference to an unspecified work failure on his part and perceived slights from co-workers, who he felt were mocking him. He said he believed his phone had been hacked and "was giving the worst feeling imaginable."

"The associates gave me evil twisted grins, mocked me and celebrated my down fall the last day," he wrote. "That's why they suffer the same fate as me."

The Chesapeake shooting came on the heels of last weekend's massacre in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where a gunman killed five at an LGBTQ nightclub, and marks the latest episode of gun violence in the United States, which averages two mass shootings per day, when defined as an incident killing or injuring four or more people, according to GunViolenceArchive.org.

Bing also wrote in the document titled "death note" that he planned to spare a person, whose name was redacted, because she had a special place in his heart, citing his own mother's death from cancer.

Asked to comment on Bing's note, Walmart said in a statement: "There is nothing that can justify taking innocent lives. Our focus continues to be on the families who are grieving and supporting our associates through this difficult time."

In addition to the seven dead, including Bing, two people are being treated in area hospitals. One is in critical condition and one's condition is improving, the city said.

The victims ranged in age from a teenage boy to a 70-year-old man. Chesapeake Mayor Rick West invited the community to a vigil on Monday evening to remember all the victims. The event will be held at a city park about three miles south of the cavernous Walmart Supercenter where the shooting occurred.

Walmart pushes back as major product suppliers ask for higher prices

EW YORK (Reuters) - Walmart (NYSE:WMT) Inc is warning major packaged goods makers that it can no longer stomach their price hikes, pitching its own private-label products to shoppers as less-expensive alternatives to suppliers' name-brand goods.

For the world's biggest retailer, which reports earnings Feb. 21, any increase in prices --- even by just a few cents -- can have negative effects, prompting some shoppers to look for bargains at dollar stores or warehouse chains such Costco (NASDAQ:COST).

Walmart, which touts its "Everyday Low Price" policy, raised prices last year on milk, frozen meals and Tide detergent, to name a few, as its suppliers battled soaring costs of everything from chemicals to wheat and fuel.

But now with the cost of cardboard cases declining by 40-50%, the cost of transportation falling by 25-30% and the cost of raw materials declining significantly, "retailers like Walmart will say 'hey you already had three rounds of price hikes last year, why are you giving us another?'" said Burt Flickinger, managing director at retail consulting firm Strategic Resource Group.

Rod Little, CEO of Schick razor maker Edgewell Personal Care (NYSE:EPC) Co, told Reuters that it "will be very difficult" to pass new price increases through to retailers going forward. Walmart is Edgewell's biggest customer.

"(Walmart) said to us, 'From here, our consumer is challenged, we're going to be looking out for consumers, so you're going to have to have really good reasons if you're going to price up from here," Little said in an interview.

"Because the consumer is now under more pressure, and Walmart is under pressure, that sets up a dynamic where there's probably not a lot of pricing going forward."

Walmart did not respond to a request for comment.

At Unilever (NYSE:UL), the purveyor of Dove soap, Knorr bullion cubes and Hellmann's mayonnaise, finance chief Graeme Pitkethly saidThursday that it was "not yet past peak pricing," even after implementing a record 13.3% average price hike in the fourth quarter of 2022. Unilever estimated net material inflation of $1.5 billion euros ($1.6 billion) in the first half of this year.

Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG), maker of Tide detergent and Pampers diapers, said on January 19 it would continue to raise prices despite seeing a drop in volumes. It sells more than $10 billion worth of products through Walmart.

To be sure, Walmart has the upper hand. Its own store brands, Great Value and Equate, compete directly with Unilever's and P&G's product lines in the United States. Forty-three percent of all purchases of store brand packaged goods made online in the U.S. were on Walmart.com, according to the research firm Numerator, which measured transactions for the last quarter of 2022.

The clout Walmart holds over suppliers also means that Walmart would likely get the lowest percentage of any price hikes manufacturers implement, according to investors who track the company. "Walmart is just a conduit (for P&G and Unilever) that uses its enormous size to provide the best deals it can for customers," said David Klink, senior equity analyst at Huntington Private Bank.

"We would think Walmart might emerge with less of a consumer goodwill hit than these other companies in a rising-price environment," said Kilnk, whose firm holds more than $45 million in Walmart shares.

Walmart previously has pulled products from shelves over disputes on pricing. In 2018, Walmart pulled Campbell Soup (NYSE:CPB) Co's products during the key winter season over a dispute over prices and shelf space promotion.

Across the pond, tussles between Britain's largest supermarket chain Tesco (OTC:TSCDY) and Kraft Heinz (NASDAQ:KHC) led to Heinz baked beans being removed from shelves. At the time, Tesco labeled Heinz's price hikes as "unjustifiable."

Huggies diaper maker Kimberly-Clark (NYSE:KMB) said it was embedding additional pricing this year, while toothpaste maker Colgate said it planned further price hikes in the first half of 2023.

"We're trying to figure out with our (dry grocery and consumables) suppliers, what could we do that's different that would help mitigate some of those costs?" Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said at an investor conference in December.

"Unfortunately, some of those suppliers are still pointing us towards more inflation next year on top of the mid-double digits this year. And we don't like that for any reason," he said.

Shoppers at chains such as Walmart and Kroger (NYSE:KR) were waiting longer to buy new products like bleach and kitty litter, and in some cases trading down to buy smaller sizes, or larger wholesale quantities because they want more value per unit, Clorox (NYSE:CLX)'s CFO Kevin Jacobsen said February 2. [L4N34I3VL]

After raising prices four times in 2022, he said, Clorox doesn't "have any additional plans" to hike prices this year.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. retailer Walmart (NYSE:WMT) Inc said on Thursday it would open 28 new healthcare centers in the United States next year, including its first ones in Missouri and Arizona.

By the end of 2024, the nation's largest retailer by revenue will have more than 75 Walmart Health centers across the United States, it said in a statement.

Located inside Walmart Supercenters, the new Health centers will cover about 5,750 square feet and offer services including primary care, dental care, behavioral health, labs and X-ray, audiology and telehealth. The company operated 32 Walmart Health care centers at the end of 2022 and plans to open 17 more this year.

As American consumers deal with stubborn inflation, spending is shifting away from goods and back into services, such as rent, recreation and healthcare, according to government data and the latest quarterly results from Walmart and several other major U.S.-based retailers.

Around 50% of U.S. consumers reported wellness, in particular, as a top priority in their daily lives, according to a September survey by global consulting firm McKinsey & Co up from 42% in 2020.

"With this growth in 2024, we will nearly double our current footprint, offering accessible, convenient and affordable care in two new states and expanding our presence in Texas," said Dr. David Carmouche, Walmart's senior vice president of Omnichannel Care, in the statement.

Walmart will open the first of the new Health centers in the first quarter of 2024, and end the year with 10 locations in Dallas, eight in Houston, six in Phoenix and four in Kansas City, it said.
